i loved homm2 and homm3 and anxiously awaited homm4. what a huge disappointment. the ai is ridiculously simple in the single player mode....i'm not sure you could lose if you tried. plus they tried to make the battle mode more "realistic" and succeeded only in eliminating the strategy aspects. skip this one and hope for the best for homm5 (if there is one).

Huge disappointment.

I loved 1 & 2 and when I saw 4 in store, I stached it up at once. Got home. Installed it. Played it for about 40 mins and then uninstalled it.

The game play is, as far as I can tell, exactly the same as 1 & 2. A few tweaks here and there but nothing new. The interface and world/map felt chunky and unpolished. I think they tried to add every bell and whistle they could. But all of it just got in way and didn't really affect the game (much).

I was really disappointed. Personally I think HoMM2 is still the best.

No where near as good as 3 was, a real shame.

Heroes of Might and Magic 4 has some new features but all together its a total drop in quality from Heroes 3. First off the graphics are totally lame, they went to 3D for no reason at all. 3 had fantastically rich artwork at every level and on every page you viewed. They have forsaken that beautiful 2D art for 3D objects that are devoid of beauty and texture and you cannot rotate at all around the objects, the view is totally static so it looks 2D anyway! The graphics of 3 was what I really loved and the combat tactics where simple and extremely fun.

At first having your hero on the board able to move and attack seemed nice, but you quickly realize that their melee attacks are weak and inconsequential, especially compared to the raw power of an army of units 300+. They are very easily killed, but they can be automatically resurrected at ANY town. The easy death and return to life of the heroes only serves to lowers the loftily presence. It was much better when Hero's would shepherd and support the armies and cast powerful spells during combat as it was in 3.

The units are essentially the same as their counterparts in 3, but they added an increasable annoying aspect where you could only build one type of unit building at a city, for instance you could build mounted knights OR angles at human cities, not both. And if you have different facilities at different cities, then you could only have one or the other in your armies, thus acing out at least one unit type and instilling a divisive element into your armies that creates a totally unnecessary headache. Again 3 shines bright over this "feature", one city could produce ALL units of that cities type, creating powerful armies.

At every turn 3 outshines 4. After my misadventure with this downgrade of a sequel I think I will repurchase 3 and have an enjoyable, fulfilling game experience with Heroes of Might and Magic. Believe me stick with 3. If they make a 5 maybe they will pick the slack back up, but play 3 until then.

Lots of new features-- to bad they make it worse.

I have played Heroes 2 and 3 and liked those games a lot. Heroes 4 does not live up to them.

What I don't like:
There are no upgradeable units. There are also fewer types of units. Shouldn't heroes 4 have more units then the previous games?

Battle system. It takes forever for the computer to move (and it has nothing to do with computer speed). The spaces on the battle map are puny, and so you can't think out a clear strategy. Unit graphics look worse then in previous versions.
I don't like the new siege battles, either. Instead of using turrets and a catapult, there are towers to put ranged units on(they gain attack and defense skill), and units can attack the drawbridge.

It is kind of buggy. Doesn't freeze very often, but there are problems with the campagns and such...

The biggest flaw: AI.
The AI makes single player games worthless. Usually, after playing for hours and beating all the nuetral monsters, you find the enemy castle and they have-- less then they started with!!!

What I do like:
Adventure map looks a bit nicer.
Skill system is better now, with more categories. Spells are harder to get then before.
Music is pretty good.

All in all, it's a pretty bad game. Buy Heroes III instead.

Close but no cigar

I have always been a HOMM fan.Ever since I played the first one I have been a die hard fan. 1 through 3 were amazing. I was really looking forward to playing the 4th. When I got it I almost cried with dissapointment. The graphics make everything look too cartoonish and the way the creatures move is nothing short of atrocious. The scenarios are fun but nothing really new. The new spell system is unbelievably retarded. The Campaigns were different somewhat but not noteworthy. I'm afraid that these games will turn out like 3do's HOMM Rpgs, those who have played them know what I mean. I rated it with 3 stars because despite its major flaws and lack of interesting and new developments, it is still a Heros of Might and Magic game. It still has the fantasy creatures that I love and the spells. I will not say DONT BUY IT! because some people may find this game an improvement where as I see it as a waste of money. If you're new to the series, I highly recommend the 2 or third and maybe even the first. These are very addictive and remarkably enjoyable.

Game to get hooked on...

HMM4 features a combination of turn-based strategic combat, city and hero development, and 6 fantastic storylines that'll keep you glued to your computer for far longer than is strictly healthy...especially when you discover the Campaign Editor.

This game is great! Much better than its predecessors. The reson ai is bad is do to a bug. Contraband int. made a patch that makes it all work fine. Try to beat the ai now... I recommend this game to everyone that likes this kind.

Al.
