Needs more ambition!

I'm a HUGE fan of the Contra series since the first arcade game appeared back in the mid 80's. I was really excited about this title and so I bought it. I'm both content and dissappointed with it. Why I'm content:
The game keeps the side-scrolling style of original Contra games; The action is fast paced; the game is challenging (kinda like the Hard mode on Contra 3 for SNES); The control is crisp and layed out well, not perfect; the graphics are great, but not perfect.
Why I'm dissappointed:

Where are the M 80k Helio bombs? Where are the flying ammunitions you can shoot down? And Why can't I recieve anything more then the 3 guns I'm givin' at the beginning (only 1 of them is really useful)? I said I liked the control, I do, but a lot of the times it's too confusing because every button is used. The graphics are a great mix of 2D and 3D but they could have done a lot more with the backgrounds. The music, although its cool heavy metal, it could have been something more original and more fitting to the game itself.
Even though this game is fun, it's not up to par with the original Nintendo contras. What we need is Konami to put some REAL effort and time into a new contra game. This one unfortunately falls into a rental, and now with a lot of stores renting out for a week, that'll probably give you enough time to beat it.

Incredibly Hard but Fun game

I'm a relatively new gamer and when i first got and played contra shattered soldier i thought that this game is impossible! But it isn't although it may be very hard for new gamers it still provides a challenge throughout the short game. i love the game and think that this is PS2 at it's best.

Marks the return of true Contra gameplay

Contra: Shattered Soldier successfully resurrects the classic 2D sidescroller gameplay found in the NES and SNES titles. Now pumped up with detailed 3D graphics, this PS2 offering delivers all of the twitch gameplay and 2 player fun everyone has come to expect from the Contra series. The gameplay involves 3 different weapons to switch between: A standard machine gun (a good all-purpose weapon), A gun that shoots bullets that scroll on the ground (good for enemys low to the ground or on walls), and a flamethrower (powerful but close-range). Unfortunately, there are no power-ups to pick up while playing, but the weapons you are given provide enough variety to keep things interesting. However, just like the older games in the Contra series, Shattered Soldier is very challenging. Even on easy mode it will keep the most hardcore of gamers on their toes. Bullets and missles will hunt you down, the screen will scroll you into many dangers, and the bosses are huge and hideous...but all of this is what makes a good Contra game. If you are looking for a hefty challenge, or a just a good "old school" action game, I highly recommend Contra: Shattered Soldier.

This game has to be on your list next the GTA: VC.

OMG this game is awesome, its one of those games that everyone will love when it's played. To start of it's a 3-d platform shooter, which just means you basically run and shoot. No more finding some special key needed to enter something, no more solving puzzles which take hours to solve. It is a basic "Run and Gun" type of game. It may seem easy since that there are no puzzles or mini quests, but when you play this game you will know why konami removed those aspects. This game is a total of an hour long, yeah just and hour !!! But if you think game length is holding you back from buying it, I don't think so. After trying out the first level, I'm positive you won't be able to beat it on your first try. It took me like 5 tries per level just to beat the game and I'm an experienced gamer!!! If you don't have this game yet go out and get it !! Trust me you won't be disappointed.

The classic is back

The original contra games were cool and are still are today. However, does this game stand up to what it use to be. The answer is yes. It may be on a differant platform but the gameplay has returned and is better than ever.

The game starts of with four levels you can choose from. Now this sounds like it is short but far from it. Yes the levels are slightly short but it will take you time and time again to even get close to the end of the levels.

The difficulty is rather high but any gamer should find the patterns of enemies and bosses after a few turns. Since the difficulty is a little high younger gamers should perhaps stay away from this one or just rent it.

Even though the gameplay is in 2D, the enviroments and characters are themselves 3D.

If you enjoy games which bring back the past then you should pick up a copy of Contra:Shattered Soldier

One of the HARDEST games to play, period!!!

This is one of the hardest games I have ever played, (Yes, even harder than the original Contra.) I've playing games since the days of the NES but this game beats almost have of that systems library of games when it comes to difficulty. You really do have to memorize the patterns of the enemies (true to Contra, I might add.) The music on this game rocks!!! Some of the best metal I've heard in a while. I especially love the opening title music. The controls are dead on, if your character dies, its your fault because you pushed the wrong button. There have been times where I wanted to throw the controller across the room, I got so frustrated. This is NOT, I repeat, NOT a game for novice gamers or gamers who looking to breeze through a game. I believe they made this game with the fans in mind because it reminded me so much of the original NES Contra. One of the few things I think that [is bad] about part of the game is that you are given three weapons to use. Thats it. What happened to the spread gun and and couple of other weapons? Oh, well. Hopefully, Konami will make a sequel and make it even closer to the original Contra. By the way the 30 life code works in this version as well. You just put it in differently than the NES game. In closing, if you want a challenging game, get this ASAP!! You won't regret it.

side-scrolling is back

I dont how many of you miss the gaming bliss of a new huge castlevania to explore, or some of the old mega mans, but I do, and I think this game is here to bring all that back and more!!! Shattered Soldier is a side-scrolling shooter that will have much similarities to the first contra's. Of course that is only in the gameplay, but you will have new moves and weapons. The graphics in this game are awesome. If you miss the old days of games like metroid, super metroid, and castlevania, then pick this baby up because you will not regret it!!!

This game is worthy of your praise, and your hate. Its great but you will be cussing at it with regret. I love this game, no game makes me feel as nostalgic as this. Im 15, but i play old school games all the time (download those sukas). This game is as hard as they come. I beat it without codes on normal. Beat that your newbies. However if your too much of a newbie, this isnt a game thats good to cut your teeth on. Too hard for that. Experienced, hardcore, pale havent been in the sunlight for months, and hot gamers as i dont hesitate to purchase

Completely Awsome!

If your familiar with the "Contra" series from the old Nintendo days, you're really in for a treat with "Shattered Soldier"!

Back in the old days Konami dished out some awsome hit's such as "Contra", "Castlevania" and many other great titles for the NES and PS1. Capcom was another favorite of mine with hit's such as "Ghouls 'N' Ghosts" (needs to come out on PS2), "Street Fighter 2" (coming to PS2 soon!), "Strider", "Mega Man" etc.

"Contra: Shattered Soldier" is the best of the "Contra" series. I love the 2-D effect... it's great. Games don't have to be 100% 3-D to be great! The action is intense... lot's of skill is needed to really enjoy this baby. Now why on earth didn't they make "Castlevania: LOI" like this? It would have rocked!

Awesome Old Fashion Scrolling Style Game

Ok, first of all this game isn't designed to be a 3D style game like all other games out there today. It is designed as a scrolling style game as in pre-playstation/dreamcast games. As a result, most of the new gamers of today might not as appreciative as old time gamers like myself. Graphics are sharp, colorful, and appear modern yet still keeping the look and feel of the old Contra games. Music is pure hiNRG and pumping that it goes hand in hand with the fighting in the game. Also, it still retain old moves (like jump loops firing and drop down from stands) from the original contra games. Animation movies between the levels are pretty entertaining too.

You can play as a one player (either as Bill or Lucia) or two players cooperative. The game play itself is pretty difficult but not frustratingly difficult. In all, it's a great game. You don't have to sneak, hide or solve puzzles. You just move and shoot. And occasionally jump. If you like the old Contra games, the chances are that you're probably going to like this game.
