Final Fantasy X is arguably the worst squaresoft game created. I would say "I only gave it a star because it wont go any lower", but evveryone else says that. So I will just say that its frustraiting not to be able to degrade it as much as I'd like. The game is incredibly dumb, And the characters are just ridiculous. Tidus is stupid. His voice is stupid. He looks stupid. He even walks stupid. And I'm not trying to nit-pick, his stride is really rediculous. The dialog, and dialect are both horrible, and the speach itself is even worse. The charactors are probably the worst part of the game. but theres no way I could possibly describe them to you.
The game has little and horrible plot. it basically goes like this: Yuna is a summoner who is on a mission (they keep refering to it as a pilgramage) to defeate a beast know as 'Sin'. Basically sin is a monster sent to the earth to punish all the wrongful deeds that have been done by man. On this 'Pilgramage' she will be acompanied by her gardians Kimari, Wakka, and Lulu. Thats how we start out. As she mmets Tidus, Auron, and Rikku She lets them join her team of gardians. Horray everyones a winner. The funny thing is most summoners only have one gardian, where as you have six. The game goes on for a while then you realize you have no world map. so we keep walking. after a while we learn all the music in the game is absolutly horrible and having having someone blow a broken kazoo might make for better battle music. And then there is Bahamut. I'm not sure how fond you are of bahamut but he is at his absolutel worst it this game. His wings are more colorful that richard simmons' bed sheets, and hes had a halo on his back. The bigest problaem with this game is they spent way too much time on the graphics and its incredibly too colorful. Thats why it has sold at all. All you morons who only want graphics.
The battle system is less that decent. I like that you can switch any character in battle (which means we can get rid of Tidus) but I would only use Yuna, Lulu, and Auron for moral reasons. the problem with that is, the game is sort of designed so you should use all seven. the summon system is alright but the somummons aren't. its set so you actually play as the summon (they call them 'aeons' but I refuse to.) however, the only two who are ok, are the two new ones, and the three side quests. Ifirit walks on all fours. Shiva they gave brest implants and more makeup than revlon can produce and Bahamut looks like a ... fat guy with wing ...
Overall, the only reason to buy it is if your an RPG collecter. I hate almost everything about this game and i really hope someone at Square got fired over it. It's a shame that it has sold as much as it has, and i truly hope Square changes their ways. This is a bad bad game, and I hate it very much.

Finally, Square Regains their talent

After a few years and a few releases of Final Fantasy, Square has once again shown the greatness of their company by releasing Final Fantasy X. I have mostly been an old-school RPG gamer, playing games like Final Fantasy 2 and 3, Chrono trigger, Earthbound, and so on, and I knew that i would not like the Playstation and Playstation 2 releases of Final Fantasy. FFVII was pretty darn good, FFVIII had the worst gameplay available, but a great story, FFIX had pretty boring gameplay and a weak plot, and now, Final Fantasy X has regained the glory of Final Fantasy: Fun Gameplay, Phenominal Story, and a new addition: voices. now, at first they take some time to get used to, but they turn out to be quite a nice effect on sorrowful scene. anyhow.....on to the review

STORY 9.5/10

This Story is really grand. your mission turns out to be to protect yuna, the lady summoner on a mission to destroy sin, a monster who wreaks havoc every 10 years. later on, your mission is to destroy sin completely, instead of temporarily. Now at the beginning, I did not like how there were machines, as the whole city was JUST machines. But to my extreme surprise and delight, Sin came and destroyed it all, sending the main Character, Tidus, 1000 years into the future where Machines are not allowed. A Very nice touch.....

SOUND AND MUSIC 9/10

The Battle theme music is extremely catchy...beware. It WILL get stuck in your head the rest of the day, and the boss theme is even Better! As you have probably heard of the intro theme song, "Otherworld", I think Even though it is a really good song, it does not belong on a final fantasy Game, but that is just a small opinion.

Im sure you know how great the sound is gonna be, so I'm not going to comment much here. Tidus's (the main character) sword sounds like a slicing sword, but the other sword weilder (Auron) makes a much more aggressive noise when striking enemies. Very nice touch

GAMEPLAY 10/10

This Game is Really fun. I swear....I could not put it down for hours at a time. This game is the third game to ever have me actually enjoy leveling up characters! (the other two were FF 2 and 3) Instead of the usual ATB (Active Time-battle) system, they now included the CTB (Conditional-Turn Based) system, A nice system that allows you to think and strategize, making the game 10 times more fun than mindless hold-down-the-x-button-and-you-win games. The boss battles are tough, but not so tough it makes you want to throw your controller. They are very fun and challenging, and adding on to the CTB, you can strategize what to do, and a little bar on the right shows the next turns for about 20 turns, so you can, for instance, see if it is wise to have Yuna Cast Slow on this monster, and you can forsee that it will greatly help you.

For the first time ever, square has introduced the ability to switch characters during Battle, causing even MORE strategizing, as well as making it easier to level up all of your characters. Gameplay has improved quite a bit from the previous two final fantasies.

MENUS AND PUT-TOGETHERS 9/10

As You probably have heard of, the Experience-gaining ability has been lost. Now, they have come out with the new "Sphere-grid" ability, which i will not explain due to the time it will take to write, and im sure some other reviews have it explained :). This Sphere-grid ability is a very nice touch, though insanely confusing at first, it proves to be quite useful. If you have ever wondered why your Black mage could not learn holy, well, now you can have her learn holy. What I am trying to say is that with this new system, you can upgrade and customize your characters the way you want, whether it is boosting their HP, strength, learning many new abilities, and so on. This really took a lot of thought to make. Adding on to that, the loading time is very short, which is very nice

GRAPHICS 10/10

For an early playstation 2 release, Square sure did a great job on mastering the equipment. The graphics are insanely real looking, and the voice acting makes it seem even more real. Not much else to say here.

CHARACTERS 8.5/10

Each character has their own voice, fighting skill, and personality. Of course, Knowing Square, I knew they would throw in a useless character, which in this case, none of them were completely useless, but thanks to the sphere grid system, The Theif known as Rikku Was not very useful, the fact being because after a short while, There is a small path on the sphere grid that can allow Yuna to learn all of Rikku's Main Stealing, using, pilfer Gil, etc abilities without straying off of the trail too much. but otherwise, Tidus is determined and caring, while Kimahri does not speak much, but when he does, it means something. All of the characters seem so much different than the rest, Making this world even more realistic.

REPLAY VALUE 8/10

Now, you probably have heard that once they finished off This game, they felt no need to play it ever again. But if you played Final Fantasy 2, then I am almost positive you will want to play it again.

You have also probably heard that this game is quite short, but I beg to differ. I spent about 40 hours on this game, and I did not get a lot of items and celestial weapons (I completed the game with the first sword you get). This game is worth your while, and The ending is Really good, and will make you watch it again....and again. I must warn you though, FFX-2 is NOTHING like X, so you might want to check out reviews before getting FFX-2.

I definately recommend this game, as it is worthy of your game collection. After the psx final fantasy games, which turned out to be not-so-great, The introductary Ps2 Final Fantasy turned out to be quite amazing. A MUST GET

Well I am a huge fan of Final Fantasies but this one was just an embarassment. The point is just like any other FF but i'll let ya know whats wrong with it. First of the main character...Tidus....I think the name speaks for itself. The kid is a moron. Apparently he is a professional "blitz ball" player whatever the hell that is. One of the poorest excuses of a sport I have ever seen. More or less underwater soccer with cheap rules and unrealistic physics. But in short the entire time I was playing the game I was embarassed just playing as Tidus. Probably the worst FF character their is in the saga of Final Fantasies.

The magic and sphere grid was stupid as hell. You couldn't get your magic without waiting for a couple of years and it took forever to get around it. Remember in the other FFs when you got your magic and spells by gaining expierence or by collecting items. Well in this game Tidus and the gang thought up something new. Now you have to go through this annoying ass sphere grid which takes an hour to learn and another 100 hours to complete(Probably more).

Now the concept is just like I said similar to the other FFs with a story of love involved with the saving of all human kind. Well in this story Tidus is supposed to save the world with his "girlfriend" Yuna. The other characters are complete tag-ons and them making an impact on the story did not come into play at all.

Another thing wrong with this game was the boss. Now over the years in a bunch of different games I have seen werid bosses and cool bosses. Nevertheless it was nothing like I saw here. The boss "Sin" is a big blob. Not only that but hes brown (kinda makes you think). So with a queerish fellow like Tidus fighitng a Brown Blob Sin the game reached an all time low. So think about it do you want to reduce yourself to a level of absolute disgrace..If not don't play this game otherwise go for it and be embarassed out of your mind and be bored as hell. You will be disapointed. Their is an absolute gurantee that you will be disapointed after your done playing this game!!

This is a excellent game! Also, I love the graphics they are the best! This is about a guy named Tidus who once lived in Zanarkand. His favorite sport is blitzball, a water sport like soccer but a monster named 'Sin' comes and destroys the wonderful place, Zanakand! Now Tidus has to find a way to defeat Sin and if he doesn't then Sin will defeat everything and everyone in Spira! Also, Tidus has friends like Wakka, Lulu, Kimhari, Sir Auron, Rikku and the 'Summoner' Yuna. A Summoner is where they go to every temple and get 'Aeons'. Aeons are special kind of monsters that help Yuna, Tidus and the rest to defeat Sin. There is six aeons. Also, when they collect the aeons Yuna does the 'Final Summoning' and defeats Sin. The Final Summoning is where the last aeon takes all its power and defeats Sin. This is an adventure and kinda like a love story type of game. I love this game! You have to buy this if you want! It's ONLY for Play Station 2! Have fun!

Extraordinary and Poignant

This is my first trip into a Final Fantasy RPG. I always wondered what the fuss was about, and now not only do I get it, but I'm a devoted fan. I simply cannot BELIEVE they were able to fit all this on one game disk!

At first the style (and frequency) of battles and the long cut scenes was a little hard for me to get into. The weapon customizations, Sphere Grid, item uses and inventory, etc., was overwhelming. But soon, all of that added to the overall addictiveness of the game, and sealed my own mental and even emotional involvement in the storyline.

The storyline - it has depth. But perhaps more importantly, the characters do, too. After a while, they seem to take on a life of their own, with distinct and very likeable personalities. They crack some good jokes at times, use sarcasm at others, and there's the occasional intentional awkward silence between our heroes that leaves them fidgety and embarrassed. Likewise, the main villains make you want to kill them. (Maester S., for instance: what a creep.) I was astounded by their realism. How just the slightest facial expression change, or subtle lift of an eyebrow or posture adjustment hit the right chord. The artists and programmers who managed all that can't be complimented enough, in my opinion. I've just never seen that in a game before.

And the movie clips! All the effort you go through to make your way to the next one is worth it. How can anyone dream up some of those images?

Now, I have played other RPGs before and adventure games, and one of the things that has always driven me mad with them is how the characters and enemies constantly repeat the same phrases over and over and over during battle. In Final Fantasy X, during battles, there seems to be a randomness to the phrase usage. While you'll hear some phrases repeated, it's widely intermittent, with characters having several lines to choose from, many being specific for certain Fiends, and which you won't hear again after you pass beyond their territory. Thank you programmers!

On top of it all, there's a game within the game: Blitzball. I didn't like it at first, but once my team players gained the ability to knock opponents unconscious and poison them, I was staying up insanely late playing that, too. :)

Anyway, it's hard not to get carried away describing it all. It's a work of art and definitely a work of love for the people who made it. My only caveat is that - with strong characters and the ultimate weapons - the final battle was too easy to win. But I look at this game as being overall more about the journey anyway.

A worthy addition to the Final Fantasy universe.

This game has a very enjoyable battle system which requires some strategy to use--the characters are, for most of the game, well-balanced and fighting truly feels like a team effort. The characters themselves are generally interesting, and although the story is told through the eyes of Tidus, the real stars are other characters, which makes for an interesting change of pace. Certain puzzle elements of the game can be frustrating, but like any puzzle, some thought and experimentation will usually get one through. Some may find the lack of a world map annoying, and I must confess I did as well, but it also makes the game easier to access for younger players, and thus a good introduction to RPGs with minimal frustration via option overload. The game system is also set up so that it can be played at a variety of levels of depth; one can just use what weapons and armor one finds, or one can customize to one's heart's content. The Sphere Grid leveling system allows a good balance between quasi-jobs and total customization--it's harder to make, say, Auron (the guy with the obligatory FF giant sword of doom) into a powerful magic user, but it is possible with some time and effort. I play it at a reasonable depth of customization, while my nephew plays shallow--but he still enjoys it.

The story is well-done and just complex enough to take some thought to sort out, while not being so convoluted that it is almost impossible to grasp without multiple play-throughs (although those never hurt!) Some of the plot twists are quite original and interesting. The voice acting is sometimes fantastic and sometimes laughable, but rarely cringe-worthy (there are a few notable exceptions). The FMV is top-notch, and with the exception of two of the characters suddenly having different facial features, the FMV models, battle models, and cutscene models are all so close that the transitions aren't jarring at all.

Although my rating doesn't reflect it (because they aren't actually necessary to play the game), the minigames required to gain each character's ultimate weapons are nothing short of hair-tearing, controller-tossing, PS2 defrenestrating madness. Please keep this in mind! The Blitzball minigame isn't so bad, and can be enjoyable (some people will likely find it a high-point), but I found it got a bit tedious after awhile. At least it didn't make me want to scream... Also, the monster capturing minigame is acceptable, since a walking tour of every part of the game already visited often leads to new discoveries, added richness for the plot, and, of course, leveling up.

Looks good, lacks a Final Fantasy name

This is truly a beautiful game. It should be, it's on a console that is a thousand times better then the console that supported then first Final Fantasy. But beyond the sheer glitz of the game it left a lot to be desired.

Role Playing games are changing it seems. I have played every one of the Final Fantasy titles. I remember staying up all night just to try to pass one section of a game or to advance to the next level. I remember coming home from school and running to the TV to pick up where I left off the night before. I remember walking and flying across the whole game world and landing on a continent where the enemy was way to strong and proceeded to waste me. I remember not having to buy a walk-through guide just to play the basics of the game. Nothing is what I remember anymore.

Now, A red arrow tells you where to go during the game. You use a sphere grid to advance you players ability. The lead character is a whinny kid that dresses worse then my "alternative" little sister. The lead character runs around like a lanky, blond haired monkey. You're playing a movie. 5 Hours into the game you realize that this IS the game and not some long, drawn out beginning. All you do is walk and talk and then fight once and a while. And everything take SOOOOO long. Talk, fighting, running, and scene transitions take forever. It's almost enough to make we want to break out the ol' Nintendo and play the original Final Fantasy cartridge (for you young ones the First Final Fantasy was on a cartridge. For a definition of a cartridge refer to Nintendo's top 10 reasons why N64 failed).

But the story is good. The battles are good. Talking characters are nice for a while, but can become annoying. You will feel more a part of the game, although you won't feel like you can make any important decisions (but you're kids, you don't get to make decisions yet).

Over all I give it three stars. It's beautiful and well worth the money. However, I don't think that it's a Final Fantasy worthy title. Developers spend so much time making the 3-D environment pretty, maybe instead they should make it more interactive. I want to climb, move, break, flick, and smell things. Also, give my charter free will! I want to fly into a dragons mouth if I choose to. Maybe they will have that in FF12 and 12.

No, no, no, no, no.....

I played this game for a long, long time (about 35 hours) and quit before beating it. Here's what I think:

First, the pros.

1. The game has good graphics for its time, definitely, although some animations are a little excessive. Backgrounds mix between 3D and pre-rendered, all usually unique and beautiful.

Okay, that about does it for the pros. Now, the cons.

1. The battling is, to put it simply, horrendous. Although the battle system is faster than previous FF games, it is inexcusable to have such a basic battle system in any RPG today. Seriously, its less advanced than many SNES RPG's. No time limits (as in FFVI, FFVII, or Chrono Trigger), no real-time implementation, nothing. Just plain, "select attack and watch" battling. Oh wait, there is one new aspect. During battle, you can switch characters in and out, which does lead to pretty handy healing or power-up situations. I'll admit, that aspect is interesting.

2. When you're not battling, the game is at its worst. It goes like this: first, there is a cutscene, then a long, painfully linear path full of random encounters every 10 seconds, and then a boss. That's it. For 35 hours or so, cutscene, linear path, boss, repeat. It starts out fun (which is why the game recieved such great reviews), but about 15-20 hours into it the fun is gone. At around 30 hours, it starts to get painful.

3. The plot is drab. I hear all these great things about the plot, but I can't agree. The plot, like the rest of the game, is basic and not innovative. It also goes from passable to just plain lame by the end of the game.

4. Audio is also drab. Music is good, but nothing sticks in my mind like Chrono Cross or the SNES RPG's of old. Voice acting starts strong, but all of the voices get very, very annoying later on.

5. Characters. Ugh. All of them are stereotypes. Tidus, the protaganist, is your typical hero with the "let's go get 'em!" attitude. Yuna is your female caster who is quiet and sensitive. Auron is your "cool" character, whose sole purpose is to be cool, and fails miserably. Rikku is the underage female who's your hyper-active and painfully annoying character, designed to test the young male gamer's Photoshopping skills. Lulu and Kimahri have no personality whatsoever. However, Wakka is a very interesting and fresh character, the only interesting one in the game. He has the best voice acting, also.

6. Blitzball. I expected a real time, soccer-like experience, but no. The developers got lazy and made it a simple turn-based borefest.

7. The Sphere Grid. What idiot thought of this idea? The old way of leveling up was fine, but the developers decided to change it for some reason. It's basically a new way of leveling up, but the thing is you level up at such small increments so often (it gets very annoying to go to the Grid after every few battles) that you never feel like you're getting more powerful. It's a perfect example of something that changes a game, but doesn't improve upon it. I definitely prefer the old style of leveling up.

Overall, the game is fun for a while (which is, as I stated before, why it got such good reviews). The whole game just gets worse and worse as time goes on. Do yourself a favor and skip this one.

A very different storyline

Basically this game took the storyline where no RPG has gone before. Imagine going 1000 years in the future to find that we have gone away from technonolgy and resorted to small towns consisted of mostly huts.

The storyline of FFX does that where a good share of the plot (the first 10 hours I've played at least) Revolves areound a mixture of religion (not like one we've ever seen yet on this planet) and blitzball, a sport that is kinda like soccer, basketball, rugby, and waterpolo all put together. It should not work as well as it does.

Gameplay is quite nice. The new battlesystem is a nice change considering how it has remained the same since FFVI. At first you cannot do a whole lot of exploring for yourself. (This is kinda common in other Final Fantasies) as you have more specific missions to complete to advance the storyline.

The sphere grid is unlike anything I've ever seen. Yes people will grip about it at first much like they did about the materia and junction systems prior, but it is actually a very interesting way to 'level up' your characters. There are numerous ways you can do this and this means you get to customize what is improtant in each character to a certain extent. (always a plus)

Graphically it is the best PS2 game ever. It looks like you're playing within an anime of some sort. Only in still shots looking pretty close to the screen can you notice the slight pixilations.

Voice acting tends to be hit or miss. Sometimes the lines are delivered quite good while other times you want to slap the voice actor for it. I wish we had the option of the Japanese voices, but what can you ask?

I would say if you like RPG's get it. Don't just buy it becuase it looks amazing. It won't be everyone's cup of tea, but I will personally enjoy this one for the few months until I beat it and then start going through it again.
