Awesome, addicting

During one of my many ventures to my local game store a year and a half ago, I came across a game called "Syphon Filter". Intrigued, I went ahead and bought it, popped it in my Psone, and to this day, it is one of the best games I have ever played. I have beat the 1st, 2nd and 3rd, and am on my second "pass" through the series. I will then give the "Omega Strain" a go on my PS2 once I am finished with SF3. While I have read no so favorable reviews on OS, I think it would be fair to at least give it a try.

You are "Gabe" Logan, a special operative for a super secret government orginization aptly named "The Agency". Your mission is to find a dangerous chemical stolen by terrorists from a lab and stop them before they destroy the world. You are remotely partnered with Lian Xing, another agent who guides you through your missions and later on in the game is in action on the ground.

You are gradually given an arsenal of weapons as each level moves forward. Among them are: There is the Silenced 9mm handgun, the .45 handgun, the G-18 Pistol-machine Gun, , the HK-5 Pistol Machine Gun, the Shotgun, the Combat Shotgun, the PK-102 Assault Rifle, the M-16 Assault Rifle, and the K3G4 Assault Rifle just to name a few.

In each mission based level, you must accomplish a variety of objectives, and eliminate a tough boss at different intervals. You will use stealth at times, or just face enemies head on. The interesting part about this game is that it really draws you in, and takes some interesting twists and turns as it progresses.

As for gameplay, it is fantastic and addicting. While the levels are challenging and tough at times, they are not overly frustrating or extremely hard. Some levels and missions are easy, and others will take a few times to get through. It will be a bit of a challenge if you play this for the first time, but you won't become overwhelmed as in similar games. As you play it a second and third time, though, you will become familiar with the layout of the levels and more or less breeze through. As an example, I was able to shoot down the chopper on the base tower after 5 tries, as opposed to 30 attempts during my first run through the game over a year ago. You will also attain some "tricks" along the way as well, such as becoming more effective at headshots and so on. I have found that it's the "little" things that get you through this game.

As for game layout and graphics, excellent, IMO for 1999 PS1. Great voice animations and camera angles as well.

While there are many new games out, especially in the wake of the XBOX 360 and PSP releases, I still encourage you to give this masterpiece a try. You won't be disappointed.

Like a book you just can't put down, One of the best.

Very challanging, and addictive. Well thought out. On the down side, changing weapons could be quicker, and or easier, but the game more than makes up for this pain in the butt. An A to A+

Syphon Filter

Syphon Filter is one of the best action/stealth games to ever sneak onto the Playstation. The graphics are cool, execpt some explosions. The controls are nearly perfect, the story is one of the best and intersting. There are a few down sides to this game. The first is the length of the game. It is long, but it seems to end quickly after beating it a few times. The cool weapons are sometimes one level only( for example the HK 5 is only in one level when the night vision rifle is in almost every one), and the enimies get stupid at times. The voice acting is is great, but the translation is stupid at times.

My only wish is that Resident Evil had this game's handling.

I discovered Syphon Filter on a demo disk at my friend's home. I liked the demo so much, I bought a Playstation just to play that game. It was worth it. I have beaten it 3 times and it is just as fun every time. You can be the psycho you know you are and for once it's real. Unlike games such as Resident Evil and Tomb Raider, the handling is wonderful! It is one of the reasons this is my favorite game. Your perspective is just behind and above Gabe Logan (no relation to wolverine he he), unless you are aiming your weapon, which places the POV directly in the gun's sights! When you go for a head shot, you get that shot. I only wish that there was a game that combined Syphon Filter type handling with Resident Evil's monsters. I would pay through the nose for a horror/action game with good handling. Oh well, guess I'll just have to start my own company and make my own. Who's with me?

Wanna be a special agent? This is your chance.

If you ever wanted to be a special agent, then here is your chance. Great action that blend gun play with stealth, challenging missions, plus many other unique features make this one a true "Special Agent" game in my opinion.

One of the coolest part about this game is the weapons. There are slew of different weapons and they really have specific use for them, unlike other games where you stick to one weapon that is most powerful. For example, you have sniper rifle for long distance shots that need to be accurate. There's also night vision rifle for shooting in the dark. There's also submachine gun with armor piercing rounds for enemies with bullet-proof vests. And you can't just spray everyone with one weapon either because you do run out of bullets, therefore you have to think about when and where to use specific weapons. And sometimes, it's necessary for you to give that itchy trigger finger a rest, for the sake of stealth mission. Definitely one of the coolest games on PlayStation.

On a personal note, I tend to get motion sickness from 3D action games, such as Tomb Raider, Quake, etc... But I had great time with Syphon Filter without any headaches or problems. This game gets extra credit from me for that one.

Royal in storytelling, characters, and pacing.

I remember being stuck on several levels in Syphon Filter -- the underground Silo Access Tunnels, for example, took me several weeks to crack -- but despite being frustrated time and time again, I found myself coming back to this game. At some point I even gave up ever trying to finish it, goofing off, replaying levels...until, suddenly, I realized that the practice allowed me to get past the Silo Access Tunnel level that got me every time.

Just for this addictive quality alone Syphon Filter wins me over. Plus there's a seamless blend of movie-style footage and player-controlled gaming (enhanced by the designers' decision to retain the graphics of the game in FMV sequences, a choice that was attacked by one magazine reviewing Syphon Filter 2). Personally, I applaud the successful effort to blur action and story, making them as one; I'd rather get sucked into the story than see some pretty graphics unfold.

Some grudges: Just like its sequel, Syphon Filter very often challenges the player's familiarity with the levels, not response or understanding. Because of heavy reliance on "stealth missions" (even more so in Syphon Filter 2), it's easy to get a mission botched instantaneously, especially in the "Rhoemer's Base" level. I don't mind setting up stealth as a mission objective, but unless I've played through that level, how am I supposed to know there are three guards in three directions at this certain point? Just like Syphon 2, Syphon Filter often forces you to play a level multiple times, which can often be annoying (spoiling the sense that the mission is in real time). This reliance on foreknowledge as a player asset gets tiresome after a while.

Small gripes on a title that I kept playing over and over, even months after I cracked it.

Syphon Filter is a very cool game! Who needs cheat codes? i beat most of the game; it was hard; it was challenging; it was awesome! oh, man! The guns were cool, the enemies were realistic, and best of all, there's no 'lives remaining'! you can restart as many times as you want! my favorite gun is the shotgun. it looks and sounds real. most games have unrealistic weapon sounds, but not Syphon Filter! and the trains in the subway are so real! they scared me the first time i played! well, have you had enough "! " yet? okay, bye bye now.

I'm amazed that this game has the depth that it does. Most action games are shoot-shoot-move-shoot-shoot. Syphon Filter on the other hand actually sets you on course with logic puzzles, traps, and some common sense manuvering that require you to use your brain. The bad guys don't just take a shot and die, which is outstanding in my book. Some people complain about it, I revel in the realism.

Movement is my only gripe. Gabe, your character, tends to slide diagonally left or right when running until you really learn to use the controller. Often, you find yourself crouching and walking just to keep him moving straight. After about 2 hours, you finally get used to his movement.

The levels have great tricks and traps, the targeting, nightvisions, and other tools are just great additions !

Well worth buying for yourself, or anyone who just got a PSX or has had one but never played a good in-depth challenging game.

This game is fun for the exact opposite reason that Metal Gear Solid is fun. In this game stealth isn't of much importance, while quickly killing all the bad guys on the screen is important. Like most action games this one is staged out into many different missions, which usually have five or six objectives in order throughout the level. My personal favorite aspect of this game is the target system which locks on to the enemy of your choice making the game easier in a crowded room of enemies. Syphon Filter is one great pure action game.
