Wipes Out the Competition.

Wipeout is one of the best racing games around. Incredibly fast speeds, great sound track, large variety of weapons, everything a good racing game should have.

If you are looking for a fast racing game then give it a try. But if you see Wipeout XL I would suggest you get it instead.

A nice sequel, but still not a good as the XL version

I bought this with eager anticipation and hopes of seeing something above and beyond the XL version. didn't really match my hopes, but still this is fun game, if you like the series its worth getting, but if you have to choose a good racer, get Wipeout XL first!

Awesome game

Although this game has exceptional graphics, (which is not what a racing game is all about) the controls are PERFECT no matter what kind of controller you have, and it's just a lot of fun! I would definetely try it out (then recommend it to a friend)!

A close to perfect the franchise has come to

Wipeout 3 was a great way to get into the franchise because it has the best of what the previous games offered plus a little more. The graphics got some serious update since Wipeout 2 and the gameplay is a lot smoother and faster. Add to that a killer soundtrack and some nice little extras and this game is an obvious choice for any arcade racing fan.

First of all the racing is just plain fun. Frame rate is very smooth and the tracks are varied and challenging. If you're not familiar with Wipeout at all then think of it as a sci-fi racing game. You're racing on an anti-gravity sled thingy that's not only built for speed but armed to take out your opponents the dirty way (by either slowing them down with a land mine or completely trashing their vehicle with a guided missile). Just keep in mind the other racers can do the same. So you have a combination of racing and a little tactical combat as well.

There are some tweaks and improvements from the last games, but the one I'm going to focus on is the instant replay. This is a very cool feature that lets you see the race you just finished from the cameraman's point of view. You see yourself racing past the crowds and screaming around curves (or crashing against the side rails depending on your performance) as if you were watching the race on tv. Neat feature.

The soundtrack is the best of the series (with Wipeout Fusion a close second). Many people prefer Wipeout 2's soundtrack because it has different and eclectic styles of electronica. To me, however, W3 has all the songs built for speed. You get a who's who of artists like Chemical Brothers, Orbital, Underworld, Propellerheads, DJ Sasha and more. For nothing else get this game for the cool soundtrack.

Considering the price of the game today you would be crazy not to buy it, even for just the soundtrack (which you can rip from the game CD). I have played it on my PS2 with no problems and the gameplay still keeps me coming back. Arcade race fans... this game is a winner.

Get 'em both

There's no question that it's basically the same game as WipeoutXL. However, it's been improved by the addition of support for regular analog controllers (as opposed to the NegCon, which never really caught on), improved frame rate and higher overall speed.

With some exceptions, WipeoutXL had more interesting music and cooler-looking vehicles (AG-Systems' racer looks great though). With some exceptions, Wipeout3's visual and sound effects have been improved (the plasma bolt just doesn't look as impressive as it should).

My only serious complaint about Wipeout3 is the limited number of tracks. From the start you only have access to four tracks. Presumably winning the gold with all 8 teams on all 4 tracks opens up another track, but I've been unable to accomplish this yet. Four tracks isn't nearly enough to play around with, and the difficulty jumps rather drastically from the 3rd track (where I can win the gold almost easily with any vehicle) to the fourth (where I've yet to place better than 3rd with any vehicle).

Still, both Wipeout3 and WipeoutXL are enjoyable, and I recommend them both highly.

Hold Up To The Previous Ones, but not much else.

This time around in the wipeout series it seems that the graphics are not quite as crisp, but that is made up for in track and "car" selctions which practically doubled. The sound track was missing that something that WipeOut XL had though. The menu fonts need some work in that some are too small for the font style. As for the game play, graphics have not improved, the game still plays very smoothly, and control is just as crisp.

Not much on improvement, but still a great game

Wipeout 3 may not be much of an improvement over Wipeout XL, but even the tinniest improvement over an amazing game that XL was makes a game incredible. True, XL may look more colorful if you compare it to Wipeout3, but the third installment reeks with new hovercraft, new amazing tracks, and small details that XL was missing such a doves in the middle a racetrack. Also is a plus is the new soundtrack. The best compilations of techno music in the Wipeout series thus far, I'm serious.

A Great Game!

Wipeout 3 is easily the best game of the three Wipeout incarnations. The graphics are sharp, the music is awesome, and the gameplay is fast and addicting. Even the intro is slick (hats off to the artistic talent at Psygnosis). This game has STYLE! I tried Wipeout XL afer playing this and it was so primitive in comparison. I've played numerous Playstation games, and I can easily say that Wipeout 3 is one of the best. The game is thoroughly enjoyable and the value you'll get out of it is unbeatable. If only there were more games like this out there.
