Not what I thought.....

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 3 / 5

Like others have mentioned the case implies this game is a karaoke-style game. It is NOT! All you do is hit buttons at a precise time and your person sings well. Even this site says that microphones are an accesory to the game.....yet you can't actually plug in a microphone and get it to work, not even for the "karaoke" portion of the game. I won the title American Idol on my first try...and I'm not real good with the buttons. I wonder if anyone ever loses? Overall this game may be okay for a rental or if you get it really cheap, but don't pay over $10 for it!

I am getting addicted to this game! :-)

I have one word to describe this game...addicting. Ever since I bought it, I can't stop playing it! All of your favorite songs...and your unfavorite songs, are on here. A Moment Like This by Kelly C., Evergreen by British Pop Idol Will Young, and 40 more songs to listen to.

Sadly, the only reason I am not giving 5 stars is because you don't ACTUALLY sing to Simon and the judges. Instead, they have three of the most boring voices I have ever heard of in my life. I do admit, however, that they make the songs that I hate more interesting to me. If Codemasters makes a sequel to this game, how the entire game being karaoke, huh?

The judges sound like the actual Randy, Paula, and Simon. What is their problem? The game is too easy to master (I've won hard level American Idol 10 times). In fact, unless you are the worst video game player in the world, you never get a chance to hear Simon's rude, yet funny, thoughts. All I am saying is that they should make this game a little harder next time. Plus, the stuff they say gets repetitive.

If you are an American Idol fan, and wanted to know what Simon thinks about your voice RIGHT NOW, don't buy this game. If you are an American Idol fan and love video games, buy this game as soon as you can.

This is NOT a sing along game. It is totally misleading when Amazon shows you that customers who bought this game also purchased the microphone. This game does not use a mic! This is a role playing game, not a sing along. Very dissapointing.

Most enjoyable Xmas fun ever

Got this little game for the girlfriend expecting a run of the mill beat game clone, but was surprised at how addictive and fun it was.
Myself a big games player in the FPS and RTS scene and more recently MMORPG, I would get shot for saying this, but I did like this game and had loads of fun with the GF and her family dancing around the dancemat.

Thoroughly enjoyed it...and some great songs, judge comments and the such.

Definately worth a purchase :D

My friends and I have so much fun paly this game. You get pick and dress your person , pick there hair style, and there voice. But my fave thing about this game is that you only need one controller and you and four friends can play on that same controller. You really don't need singing skills to play. But you need to know where all the buttons on your controller are.

dumb game

this is the stupidest game i have ever played. do not buy this game if u do then you r very dumb, really it is a waste of time. and also when it is time for america to vote, they just put anybody's name. even if you were the best. and if u sounded awesome, they say no or something. they give you a small selection of songs to choose from. it is either like one or none. i think i wasted my money. i think you should like, sing into a mic, and they start from there. that would be better than this dumb game is now. i mean cmon, pressing buttons?! a 4 year old could do that. let alone a 13 year old!!! don't buy this. if you were smart, you wouldn't buy it~!!!

Fantastic

I just got this game as sort of a late birthday gift (my birthday is Jan 3) but is fantastic. It is tons of fun to design your own guy and win competitions. However, the only reason its not getting 5 is because there were some glitches in graphics and its not like you actually sing (unless you have a mic). If you have a mic you can do karaoke mode where YOU actually sing, but other than that you press buttons to keep your singer in tune.

STUPID GAME

Stupid game. The judges are the stupidest part about the game. Simon says i'm bad, then paula says "I agree, you were awsome tonight." And randy says "well we are all in a agreement, you should be in the next round." how stupid is that???

A good game -- for COLECOVISION circa 1982

NOTE: I did NOT give this game 4 stars. Somehow the system has assigned that rating. It wouldn't let me rate it at ALL when I did this review, and won't let me change it now.
I'D SAY TWO STARS MAX.

REVIEW

I really can't understand why some people love this game.

Perhaps it is the fact that you don't do the typical fight, shoot, fight, shoot of so many other games.

Let's put aside the fact that this is not (repeat NOT) a karaoke sing-along game as you would assume (and as the box description implies).
It is, instead, a way to make more money off the American Idol show by creating a "game".
(I just can't say "game" without quotes, because it seems to similate a game, rather than actually BE one.)

The graphics are fine. A lot of hairstyle and wardrobe choices can be had for your singing cartoon character.

But I wish they had spent less memory and design work on that stuff -- and more on "game" play.

Because, frankly, in my opinion, there is no subsantial game play.

It shows you an X -- you hit the X with the beat of the song.
It shows you a triangle -- you hit the triangle with the beat of the song.
It shows you a circle -- you hit the circle with the beat of the song.
(yawn)
It shows you another triangle, circle, circle, square.... beat beat beat beat (yawn yawn yawn yawn).

It is, simply, an overglorified, overpriced game of SIMON.
(No, not Simon the AI judge,... You remember SIMON.... 4 colorful buttons that glowed... then you had to hit them in the right order to win.)

My Sims Bustin Out game on GameBoy Advance has this same game -- as a MINI game WITHIN the main game.

(Yes... this entire game is so sophisticated it can be replicated as a mini-game within a game-boy game. Impressive, eh?)

They have attempted to make it more interesting by having your cartoon singer improve as you correctly hit buttons with the beat.
Maybe it is my game -- but even that didn't work well.
The "game" would say "great" as I hit the beat -- yet the singer would waiver notes and be flat.

The mini-competions are even worse.
While you control nothing... you are forced to listen to other cartoon wannabes sing flat.

If this game came out in 1982 and was marketed by ColecoVision -- or Intellivision -- it would have been breakthrough game play.

But in 2004 -- and with a 2004 price tag -- it is a pathetic attempt to make more money with no content.

Buy it only if you don't want to have to fight, shoot -- or think.

American Idol is a fun game. You need a separate headset for karaoke. You need a dance mat to make them dance. If you have the right equipment, it's a blast! The judges will always let you pass no matter how bad you are, even on hard. Picking the outfits is fun. Putting on the make-up for the girls is time consuming, but worth it. Karaoke is the best part. This game is pretty cool!
