A great one-player game, but....

The first PS2 console I received (I just got my replacememnt) had a defective second controller port, so I played this title quite a bit solo and liked it. In one-player mode, there are plenty of options, and a nice progression of available features as you complete one level after another, which make it fun and challenging. However, once I gained the ability to play it with 2 players, the game quickly lost its luster. First of all, the two-player mode basically only allows you to have one race at a time, rather than a series of races and levels -- making it basically an "exhibition game" instead of a "season". Secondly, I find it very annoying that the two=player races all end as soon as the first of the two player cars reach the finish line, instead of allowing both cars to complete the race. And finally, unlike in one-player mode, the player options in two-player mode are quite skant -- with a very limited number of cars available to choose from. So, basically, I would say that this game is great if you only wish to play it alone. But if you're looking for a racing game to play with your friends, you're better off trying something else.

Graphics traded for Game Play

When I received this game as a present from my parents I had hoped that the PS2 was going to add that extra bit of realism to the racing games that I had been looking for, for so long. After playing the game for a short time it became apparent that no such luck had blessed the game. The steering of the game uses a sliding system where by the cars do not turn but instead do some type of strange skidding to make tight turns. This was not the only problem that I had with the game however. The game also sported absolutely no damage to cars from impact with objects or other cars, and a strange physics reaction when two cars hit that causes them to change speed without changing direction. All in all the realism was non-existent.

In the games defense this was an excellent example of the potential for the PS2. In addition to the graphics Ridge Racer also offers a terrific sound track to go with the game. The audio functions as a radio broadcast of the race and supports the game rather than acting as background.

In conclusion I would only recommend this game to people who already like racing games. This is probably the best one out there but for me; I'm going to wait until something a bit more real hits the market.

Rent it but don't buy it.

Ridge Racer was one of the three games in my game pack. In short this game is simply an improoved version of the origional PS1 version. The tracks look very much the same and the game play is identically. On the plus side the game has great music and the announcer actually adds to the game this time. You don't have to place first to move to the next track anymore and the familiar tracks are slightly modified. Graphically the game is great, from the light trails left by the lights to the cars themselves. On the down side the game is very repetative. I got tired of the game in under half an hour. The cars still bounce off the walls as before and you aren't able to stray off the track like in other racers. To sum it all up, my title says it all... "Rent it but don't buy it." If you are a racing nut then definitely rent it first, don't buy it without checking it out.

Graphics and gameplay are terrible.

The graphics are unpolished and the cars don't drive like real cars. If you just tap the controls the car jerks to the left or the right. It is almost impossible to drive the cars without crashing because of the extreme control pad sensitivity. I played this game about 5 times and now I don't play it anymore. It was a total waste of money. The best game that I played so far is WDL World Destruction League. If you want a great game that has awsome graphics that allows you to play 4 players at once, then buy WDL.

I have Ridge Racer 5 , there are only 6 cars in the game. They're really fast but they still look the same when you custimize them. Although the gameplay is great but there isnt a reverse button. Get Gran Turismo 2000 instead, Im gonna trade my RR5 for GT2000

Good racing game...but better will be coming.

This is one of the first games I got with my system. It has been a lot of fun but you end up running a lot of the same tracks over and over. The graphics are great in one player mode put the frame rate goes down in two player mode...that is disappointing. Recommended, otherwise wait a few months for GT3 to be released...that should be even better.

great fun after practice

this game is a truly fun game for race fans. it is a little hard to get the handle of steering but after you get used to it you will love it. the graphics are great and it isnt really hard until you get farther into the game. the beginning lets you get used to it without making it impossible.

Cars, Racing, Cities

OK, It's not the best driving game created, but it does have nice graphics and is very quick. I Wish: 1. It had better use of dual-shock controls 2. All race tracks didn't look the same 3. My Saitek RX400 worked better I'm Happy that: 1. You can race head to head with another player 2. The visuals are good Over all I liked the game more than I disliked it. Unless winning races gets you more cars and cities though, it will get redundant very quickly.

Exciting once you get used to the car manuevering

If you've played the old PS Formula One games, then you'll like this game. It's challenging at first but once you get used to the car manuevering, you'll progress through the rounds.

The game only provides two different views from the racer's perspective (in the car and slightly behind the car). The old PS Formula One games allowed three views I believe.

Also, when you are playing head to head, there is ONLY ONE view (while in the car). So for those who enjoy a view of the entire car while racing, you are out of luck.

All in all, this game is pretty challenging and I've enjoyed it.

People that want great looking games should definitely try Ridge Racer V. This game is without a doubt the best-looking launch title for the PS2. Althoug RR games usually can't compete with the Gran Turismo series, RRV for PS2 far surpasses GT2. The game is amazingly realistic, from the background to the dynamics of the vehicles. Gameplay is fast and smooth, and the music is pretty cool too. My only complaint about this title is the announcer. His annoying comments sometimes get in the way of the race. If Namco hadn't included him, this game would have been perfect for its time.
