Star Wars on auto-pilot

This is a Star Wars game that originally came out near the launch of the PS2, and was later ported to Xbox as a 'special edition' package. I just recently, finally picked up an xbox, and being a Star Wars fan decided to give this one a spin.

This is a solid and playable game, but in hindsight it's nothing special. Some Star Wars games have been outstanding (Jedi Knight, Knights of the Old Republic), some have been dirt poor (Obi-Wan), and others have tried hard without quite hitting the mark (Clone Wars, Bounty Hunter). Starfighter kinda falls on the lower end of that last category. Graphics are very first-generation circa 2001, getting the job done without blowing you away. The story weaves together three separate characters and their ships and ties into Episode I, but it just doesn't becoming involving. The gameplay is based off the Rogue Squadron series developed by Factor 5, a mix of arcade and flight-sim where you destroy stuff and protect targets in the Star Wars universe. Only there's not a lot of innovation from Rogue Squadron, and it feels like more of the same from levels you played during the N64 era.

Starfighter feels like a 'safe' product for Lucasarts, a game they could churn out with a proven formula in-between bigger projects. It's worth picking up for any Star Wars fans looking to complete their collection, but everyone else should pass.

I this game stinks compared to Rogue Squadron 2. Rogue Squadron has better graphics, entertaining, and more fun then Star Wars Star fighter. If you are a true star wars fan and want a great flying game by Star Wars Rogue Squadron 2.

Maybe great, but.....

Sure the graphics and gameplay may be souped up from PS2, but want me and most other people seemed to be more excited about is Star Wars: Rogue Squadron 2 on GameCube. The consoles cheaper and the game (RL) is a better game.

Fun, but a little redundant

Graphics and sound are excellent, but I find myself getting a little bored with the premise of the game. I would have much preferred a title that revistited some orginal trilogy storylines and ships. The Shadows of the Empire game on Nintendo64 was much better. I hope LucasArts considers a sequel to that game.

Based on the original...

I don't belive there have been playable demos of this game yet, but the original (on PS2) was a nightmare. The only good thing is that part of the problem was the terrible grpahics, which can be fixed on the xbox. The only problem is that the gameplay will need to be more diverse and entertaining, and most starwars fans will be looking to Star Wars: Rouge Squadrine 2 by the time this comes out, which plays like a masterpeice. If they do improve the title, it still might not be too good.

Decent game but I want the original trilogy

Starfighter is a pretty cool game from Lucas though I wish Rougue Leader and the new Racer were available for X-box.

Starfighter has a decent story line with 15 missions ranging in difficulty. There are some pretty cool bonus missions as well. "The Final Assault" will test your skills as that Mercinary Ship is a tough kill. All in all it was a good purchase.

One of the Best Star Wars Games in Years

I had my doubts initially about this title with all the hype about Rogue Squadron 2. But after having played them both this is the nearest you can get to total immersion since Lucas Arts released Tie Fighter. Rogue Squadron 2 doesn't hold a candle to the truly cinematic graphics that are only possible on a system like the XBox. Don't whine Nintendo owners, The GC just isn't powerful enough (and yes I do own one, my kids love it, I don't have time for it). I just can't wait until Lucas Arts do a game designed specifically for the XBox Hardware (remember this is just a PS2 port with better graphics and more missions) my mouth waters at the thought!

It was......well......boring!!

It hurts to write a bad review for a star wars game, being as big a fan as I am. However, this game did not live up to my expectations. First complaint are the dull, boring ships you fly. Maybe you're excited about flying Naboo fighters but I'd prefer a TIE Fighter or X-Wing anyday. Then you get these weak missions that if you put it on Easy it's no challenge, if you put it on normal you'll be dead before you knonw who's firing at you. I also didn't like the open space part of it. My favorite aerial game is StarFox where you're always flying forward and into action and this fly everywhere stuff didn't excite me.

However, I'm not saying you won't enjoy this game. You only won't enjoy it if you share my sentiments listed above.

Rogue Squadron 2? Please......

I have never excually been a star wars fan but the games that follow star wars are great. Rogue squadron isnt the best pick its the best game for gamecube and people who dont like star wars wont like the game and even if people who like star wars come in and buy a gamecube rogue squadron doesnt come close to starfighter for xbox.

Get an xbox and star wars starfighter!

Don't waste your money

This game is probably the worse game I have ever seen, there is not planning in it and it looks like it was rushed to get (more money) from suckers like me. It's hard to play and the graphics are pretty much nonexistant. I expect more from Lucus and Microsoft.
