Fun, but you still need to eat and sleep!

I made the mistake of getting Civilization II this past weekend and sadly, spent nearly 12 hours over the last two days playing it. The game is very addictive as you nurture your people from a band of settlers to a complex empire sprawling across many cities. Game-play is simple but it takes a while to figure all the options and what to click on. I haven't gotten too deep yet but I can tell you it's a lot of fun, more complicated than Sim 2000 but less demanding (time-wise) than Command and Conquer. The game is turn-based so you can take your time. A definite buy and worth every penny!

I really like Civilization II for my Mac. The changes from the first version of the game are wonderful and I'm happy that you can chose not to watch the "wonders" videos all the time. I also like the various levels of difficulty and the fact that I can make up a nation/race -- I often do Amazons then use "names of Amazon cities" from Classical references. However, a big problem is the "tutor" and "instant advice" that I cannot turn off. I think I should be able to reset the game options better than it allows because I find these pop-ups to be very annoying.

Best Game Ever!

I started playing this game in the sixth grade. Now I'm about to graduate college and still find myself playing it. It's that addictive. You have to have a good imagination, however, to truly enjoy this game. It lets you envision yourself as ruler of a famous people (the English, the Mongols, the Americans, the Vikings, etc.) during every stage of human history.

The premise is simple: You start out with units called "settlers" and proceed to build cities, roads, and armies -- in other words, you build your own civilization. You also research different technologies and engage in diplomacy to help advance your civilization's status. You win either by conquering rival civilizations or building a space ship that reaches another planet. I always prefer to win by the former method. It's more fun! The graphics are not great by today's standards, but this does not diminish the quality of the game play. I have been playing this game for a decade, and I expect to still be playing it a decade from now.
