Gothic 2 Review

I love all the Gothic games and this one is no exception. The graphics are gorgeous and although there are a few bugs in the game the freedom to explore you surroundings is more than worth it. The fighting is a basic hack and slash which you can basically defeat any enemy if you just keep clicking the mouse. The plot isn't all that different than Gothic 1, although it seems much shorter, get strong enough to beat the big bad. Overall it's a pretty good game.

Great game

This game will keep you playing for a long time if you are into single player rpg's. The graphics are kind of old now, but does not take away from the fun of playing it. Definitely worth getting.

It would not play on my computer. Gothic 1 would and I bought a used version of gothic 2 at a flea market and it does but not this one.

As immersive as the sea

This game is so lively and imaginative it reminded me of Zelda and Mario more than anything in the computer world. Of computer games, only the original Deus Ex comes to mind as somewhat similar and on the same level. Some rarefied company indeed.

As you may have gathered from the other reviews here, you should spend a few minutes learning the combat controls when you start the game. Just save the game and use the first "young wolf" or goblin as the opponent, and practice parrying with one of the early bandits. With most enemies, parrying is useless and the correct tactic includes either crowding or dodging and timing your attacks (unless you're using ranged attacks or magic). Some of the dragons will be impossible to kill if you don't spend your "learning points" very well (or use some "tricks", like powerful magic scrolls), but otherwise this game set a new standard in gameplay which similar games haven't even tried to match or surpass. The combat system often makes you panic in a realistic way. The gameplay is frustrating only when you hit the wrong button or something. The bloodflies aren't the only things that made me experience feelings of horror mingled with disgust. I've hunted down an occasional disgusting bug in real life, and the feelings were the same. No other game has sent cold shivers of fear down my spine, and this one does so often. I recall I once ran into something in Deus Ex that literally made me jump backwards and fall off my chair, but that's different.

I didn't have any trouble with bugs, save that when Raven went through the portal the cut-scene crashed the game so I just didn't bother to watch it. That's the only crash I've experienced during some 60 hours of playing the game.

PS. This is a review of the German version of Die Nacht des Raben, with all the patches installed.

HI... tried ordering G2 gold edition online but it won't let me, and the retailers here don't have it in their data even. So, my only options are to get somweone I know in the states to get it for me, or to go there myself and try to get it. Gothic 2 ..gold edition- Night Of The Raven. Thats the one. Email me anyone who knows how to get this to me here in Victoria BC.

Game feel old and boring... Poor graphics and sound. Just to out dated and not worth the money.

Very good overall graphic, voices good, sometimes funny, sometimes sarcastic. PC Game should have a Readme file that gives maps, and walkthroughs

A good first person shooter type game

Gothic 2 is a pretty good game as far as games along the first person shooter go. And that is what this game basically is, even though you use swords and clubs instead of guns. It's about like a lot of other games of this caliber I've tried. It isn't anything really special but, it isn't anything bad either. I would say it is a middle of the road type game for people who like this type of play and it is a lot of fun.

Awesome... with problems...

I am a Gothic fan *big time!* Unfortunately, this version (with the expansion pack "Night of the Raven") gave me nothing but fits. It would not install correctly. I did everything I know how to do to try & install it, but I kept getting massive errors & "can't find disk" errors. I did successfully install eventually, & played through the entire game 2 more times (for a total of 10). The Gothic series is worth adding to your collection if you are an RPG fan. I can't imagine having never played it now that I have... & will again.

Buyer beware -- Do NOT buy if you have "always on" internet access

I really, really wish I could write a good review for this game.

Unfortunately, I can't run it. Reason why? I have a firewall on my computer system. Advice from the company that makes it: disable the firewall. Sadly, with an "always on" internet connection like many people have these days (DSL, cable modem, etc), today that is simply not an acceptable answer.

Hopefully their next game won't have this fatal flaw. Oh, and just one star for me as well, for not researching this game better before I bought it. There's plenty of blame to go around.
