Brothers In Arms: Road To Hill 30

Ok...I saw "Band Of Brothers" and thought it was a cool series. I also saw a documentary on The History Channel hosted by Ron Livingston (he played Capt. Lewis Nixon in Band Of Brothers) called, "Brothers In Arms: The Untold Story Of The 502nd." This particular documentary had cut-scenes from this game (maybe the Xbox version?), so..I felt like I wanted to give it a try. What really drew me to this game was that it was based on actual maps/battles which occurred around D-Day. Read on...

I played it on the easy level first time around (and used some cheats...yep..I cheated)....THEN went for more difficulty and DIDN'T cheat. There are several little easter-eggs you can open as you get through the levels (historical things, weapon details, etc.)..and one of them is a little video with one of the writers of the game playing and discussing certain aspects of the game. Watching this vid made me want to play w/o any cheats...

For realism, I would say the game is very realistic...one thing I hated was the fact that I couldn't get the sight to sit still on an enemy, but if you think about it...in heated combat...this is VERY difficult to do...unless you're sniping from far away, maybe. Another bit of realism...if a round hits NEAR you...you flinch...and react from the concussion...you even see a little smoke from where it hits near you.

It's stated in the game that the sounds (such as rifle shots, etc.) were recorded from the actual guns that you use. So..the M-1 sound..is the sound of an actual M-1 being fired. Also, the maps/levels you traverse...are based on ACTUAL places that existed around the time of D-Day (fields, houses, intersections, etc.). Very cool. You can check all of this out in the easter-eggs that pop up after you complete various levels.

You can crouch or stand. I would've liked to have had the ability to go prone, but...it isn't necessary.

The game, like many others, is limited in where you can go explore, etc.. This isn't uncommon as the game has certain goals to be tackled, then you move on. One thing I really liked (and still like) about Operation Flashpoint (I know...old game) is you can go any where.

I'm no hard-core gamer, but I do like war/shooters....and this one is a good one for the price.

Oh...and you can also unlock some cheats like "Oldmovie," (you play in black & white), "Infinite Ammunition" and "Supersquad" (takes longer for your squad to get hurt or die; they can take more hits) as you beat the game on various difficulty settings.

There's a difficulty setting called, "Authentic" which I haven't gotten to, yet. I believe it is where you don't get any heads-up about where enemies are...and you don't get a sighting-reticule....hmmmm...should be interesting!

Anyway..I know my review isn't chocked full of good game details...sorry...kinda early in the morning w/o my caffeine at this point. This IS a fun game....a great one to add to the library! Have fun!

Tired of all the hype and BS.

You know, I am sick of all the hype about this game by a bunch of weenies that don't seem to know real combat, real weapons or realism of any sort beyond what they see on their TV screens.

This game is not the authentic real life war on-the-battlefield war game that all the geeks are hyping and signing the party line the company puts out.

I bought two of these games after reading the reviews and I have to say that you people don't know what you are talking about.

There is pseudo-realism and that is about it. Sure the maps are close, the look and sounds of the weapons are close and even the dialog is about right, but that is about as far as it goes.

These games fall down severely on the accuracy/authenticity in several key areas.

1.Ludicrous restriction on the tactical options available to the soldiers and the squad leaders. Some of this is bad level design, some of it is probably trying to make up for the limitations of their AI, and some of it is just plain dumb.

2. Ridiculous limitations on interaction with the environments. You cannot open doors or windows. You cannot climb fences. You cannot use the wire cutters that every paratroop carried. You cannot go under a normal barbed wire fence, which thousands of hunters do several times a day in america.

Barrels and crates don't blow up or even move when hit by a tank. You can't even climb over a low wall that some other men just went over.

Perhaps most unforgivable of all, you cannot go into a prone position or crawl. You know, the stuff they teach everyone in BASIC TRAINING!

3. The gunsights are ludicrous. The amount of creep even in a crouching position is ridiculous. If I was that shakey I'd head for the retirement home.

4. Terrible path blocking and object collision detection. Quite a few times when I had a perfect view of a target and as perfect a sight picture as you would ever want I could not hit the target no matter how many rounds I fired. In real life I would have put a round through both ears of my target.

5. Absurd size of the weapons relative to your field of vision when zoomed in. Come on folks this is ridiculously UN-authentic. There is a reason for the open sights on fast action weapons like the Thompson and other SMG weapons.

6. Really stupid scenario designs. There are several instances where you are put face to face with tanks and no tactical options except to run for enemy panzerfausts. Making this worse of course are the level designs that force you to follow a relatively linear and restricted path to said anti-tank weapons. This is completely ridiculous.

7. Poor level designs. Too many places you cannot go or step when you should be able to. Places you cannot jump over or crawl under where you should. Only in EIB do you get to even blow holes in the hedges with the TNT that all paratroops carried as part of their standard pack during that theater of operations, and then only in key places and one whole scenario.

8. Situational awareness mode. Give me a break. This is supposed to substitute for the advance study done by the troops? It's not even as good as a raw topo map dump. You are chained to camera angles around key points and there are no indications of any significant type for changes in elevation and quite often the terrain features are faded out due to the choices made for the camera angle.

9. Another limiting factor is that you cannot issue movement commands to a location you know is there but are not lined up on directly yourself and you had better be on the side away from the enemy when you issue the order. This could have been easily fixed by using some option to issue commands while in situational mode, especially if that were better done.

10. Lastly the much hyped authentic tactics. Authentic, sure, in a very introductory and watered down way, severely limited in permutations, applications and variations due to all the other limitations of the game.

By the way, I am both a veteran and an experienced programmer and I am highly disappointed with this game on both counts.

If this is the latest in realism then it shows what a sorry state the gaming industry really is in. Of course I still haven't seen AI in a commercial game yet that matched up to what I saw undergrad programmers doing in college during the 80s. We deserve better and it's not that hard to do. It's time we stopped allowing these companies to hype this stuff up like it is so great when it's all fluff like pretty pictures and sound.

Oh, one PS. The AI cheats. You can observe how the enemy becomes magically aware of things completely out of the blue, such as someone being behind them, not moving or firing, and behind cover. This is inexcusable.

Technology Issues

This game has severe technology issues, especially pertaining to video cards. It does not run on certain very common video cards such as the GeForce4 MX 420. I wasted my money on this game that I now cannot play unless I buy and install a brand new video card. I have heard of other problems such as constant crashing, as well. My advice to you would be to research your system specs and make sure you can run the game. Unless you're a tech geek with a ton of customized specs or someone with a very new computer, it probably will give you trouble.

THIS GAME ROCKS I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR YEARS FOR A GAME LIKE THIS ONE, U GET TO COMMAND SQUAD FIGHT LIKE REAL SOLDGERS WOULD DO, REAL MAPS, WEAPONS SOUND LIKE REAL ONES ALSO GERNADES. THIS GAME WOULD ONLY BE FUN TO THOSE WHO WANT A REAL WWII EXPERIANCE, NOT LIKE CALL OF DUTY THIS GAME IS BASE ON A TRUE STORY, MUCH MORE WWII EXPERIANCE THAN CALL OF DUTY, MAYBE CALL OF DUTY 2 WON'T EVEN BEAT BIA:EIB. AL THOSE BAD REVIEW IS BECAUSE THEY DON'T EVEN KNOW HOW SOLDGERS FIGHT, U AND UR TEAM GET ON THE OTHER SIDE AND ENEMY ON THE OTHE AND FIGHT AND FLANK, DIE TOGETHER, NOT LIKE CALL OF DUTY IN MULTIPLAYER U ROAMS ALONE BY URSELF. THANKS GEARBOX FO THIS GREAT GAME.

This review will be short because I was never able to play the game. Be careful if you buy the PC version of the game! Make sure your system requirements are exactly what is on the box or you will be as dissapointed as I was. Even my top of the line computer wouldent run it because I didn't have one of the handfull of vidio cards supported. Bottom line buy with caution!

Try the Red Ochastra Mod.

Relating to the question from that guy asking why he couldn't play the game from the axis side and the guy in his responce to the question...................try Red Orchastra (A mod for Unreal Tournament 2004) it pits you playing either as a Nazi or Russian soldier during the war Hitler unleashed against the Soviet Union in the second WW.

I always play from the Nazi side because they have superior weapons and equipment and really they had superior everything over everybody even the Americans such as ourselves in real life during most of WWII. If you think about it, it took all of us banning together (U.S., Russia, Britain, etc...) to defeat the Germans? That's scary!

Not to say I am for the Nazi's and not the Allies but in a game it should not matter to much really, it only counts in real life.

I always wanted to play as the Germans in Call of Duty. I know you can do this in multiplayer but it would be cool to set up the same single player game from the German side also. I think that would be cool but I would hate to kill Americans because it might have been my grandfather I was shooting at........he was over there somewhere?

I can't wait to get this game and will write a full review on it after I finnish it unlike some that jump-the-gun before it comes out even. Until then take my advise and try the Red Orchastra mod. It's cool!

I've had this game for a week and I can't play multi-player. Not once. No support. None. No FAQ. No e-mail address to contact. No online help. Tiny manual. So I have half a game. Bummer.

Why is this game being advertised on television as if it is a new game? It is a year old and apparently a port to the PC.
