Darktone is a very enjoyable game for the price. And if a sequel would follow sometime in the future i would buy!

More Than Your Money's Worth

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 2 / 2

I saw this game in a store, and the screen shots looked decent. I figured it was worth a shot for the low price. It was definitely worth the money.

That being said, I will start off with the game's flaws. The most glaring (at least in my mind) was the playing character's inability to want to go through doors. I had no problems getting him/her through an archway, but they just loved walking/running into the space right next to the doors, and trying to get them through the door then was a lucky try. The character's movements were definitely a little herky jerky. And, as another reviewer pointed out, this must be the longest PS1 game in loading time. Finally, although it's hard to believe one character could fit all those items in their pack, the fact that they can only wear four rings on eight fingers and two thumbsmakes me wonder how deformed their hands are.

But I can't ignore the game's plusses. The ability to upgrade weapons, or acquire weapons/shields/armor/rings with enhancing powers is a very nice plus. The playability keeps it challenging, especially how some levels change when you move up from the Novice level. The mini quests can sometimes be frustrating, but they are all solvable. And is there an easy way to defeat the wizards?

Graphics: 4 -- The faces are a bit... off, but otherwise the different looking swords, shields etc. is nicely done.
Sound: 3 -- Though most liked the music etc., I found I had to play something else on my stereo to cover it up.
Playability: 4 -- That door problem could not be more frustrating, but otherwise the movement works well enough.
Difficulty: 4 -- Sure, some levels are quite easy, but the ones that are difficult keeps it challenging.

And for all those people who thought mashing the X button would get you through the game, try using your level 8 character on something higher than the 1st dungeon. And for crying out loud, if it's too dark in the dungeon, use a light spell!

Can't beat it for the money

Did this one ever surprise me. I'm still basically at the early stages of the game but for the money you can't beat it. Actually its better than 95% of the games I have paid $50 for. Control is good, game play is fun, its not a rental, its a buy!

Attention Crawlers!

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 1 / 1

Pretty much, this game is purely a dungeon crawl. It's roaming from screen to screen, fighting the monsters & collecting items, while gaining experience to improve your character. While there is an overall plot, in addition to sub-plots that take place in each area, mainly you're just trying to get bigger & badder so you can do away with more beasties. If you're out to go roaming through the caves, just looking for things to take out, I'd highly recommend this game.

Plus #1: There are far more sub-plots available than there are areas, so you can play the game multiple times and encounter new things along the way.

Plus #2: Three choices of viewing: Overhead, set-perspective, or the more common roaving-perspective (which personally gives me a headache).

This Game makes me vomit

To put it simply, I would rather undergo a visectomy via weedwacker than play this game again. When I first played it, I was convinced it was going to be good because I everything else about the game was good. It cost 7 bucks and I didn't even have to pay for it. The title was pretty good and the screenshots were appealing. When I played the game, I enjoyed it thoroughly. One of my friends later pointed out that I was in "Bad Game Denial." This game's graphics were comparable to Pong, and Arkanoid 1. It was so dark that I had difficulty distinguishing walls from crudely-drawn, sword-wielding skeletons. When running, attacking, casting spells, and performing simple actions, my character, regardless of who I chose, looked like a perturbed fetus. His/Her facial features looked very similar to a peach-colored grape. He was constantly hunched over like an old man facing arthiritis in virtually his entire body. My character's grunts when he was being hit were similar to the sounds that come from a rhinocerous in labor. The motion his body made when he swung a sword or staff or whatever were like a door on its hinges. I spent many hours after my realization laughing incontrollably like a psychopath at the sheer stupidity of it all.

Graphics: 4 I can only give it this much because of the chicken that runs around in town. That little guy made me laugh and he was well made.

Character Structure: 2 The characters, for the most part, looked like a pillow for their torso, and string beans for their arms and legs.

Storyline: 3 The basic story is that for some reason or another, you're supposed to collect 6 or 7 crystals. I got as far as the second crystal, but then, there just weren't anymore quests to do.

Gameplay: 4 You can cast a variety of spells and use more than a few different weapons. However, since it has a very Diablo style form of gameplay, (except not as good) it got old very fast.

If you want my opinion, don't buy this game unless you are someone who likes extreme pain. Rent it, maybe, just so that you can laugh at how bad it is, but other than that, just stay away.

A 'Role-Playing' Game that Isn't

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 1 / 2

I have read reviews of Darkstone here and elsewhere, and the general consensus regarding this inexpensive game has been negative. If you are looking for one of those role-playing-for-shut-ins-type games with lots of talking between short stints of playing, then Darkstone is not for you. I like that I can play for a half hour now and then and have a good romp casting spells to whip trolls and what-not.

The gist of Darkstone is simple. Find seven crystals to make the time crystal to beat the dragon at the end. There are eight different character types, male and female each of a wizard, warrior, thief, or the clergy. As you kill monsters along the way, you accumulate skills and magic bits and money. Who doesn't like that?

The only short comings of the game are how slow the transitions between scenes are and the fact that there is no two player mode. If Take2 made a sequel or another game like Darkstone, I would certainly buy it.

This game is just plain bad. I played it at my friends house and I got sick of the game in ten minutes. The graphics are the worst i've ever seen for an RPG. I know graphics aren't everything but this game is just lacking so much graphics. I think it was late at night and the producers hadn't slept in over a week when they were making the graphics for this game. I agree what another person said in their review 'you can literally beat the game while just pressing the X button.'

It also is very bad on the lighting effects. I entered a cave and it was pitch black. I just kept walking while tapping the X button and beat the cave.

I would give the game -100 stars if i could. Listen save your money. You don't know when a great game goes down to only only [price].

I know i'm a rookie at writing reviews, but at least listen to me halfway. RENT THE GAME FIRST. That way you only spend five dollars on a worthless title, rather than spend [price] or even [price] on this game.

very good and fun game review from danny a 13 year old gamer

this game is extremely fun if you follow the story along. starting by reading the history in the instruction manuel, watching the opening cinematic when you start a new game, and then going from level 1 up until the end. this game throws in harder enemies as you progress in the game. the graphics aren't top of the line, but if graphics dont bother you, go and have fun. the gameplay is wut makes this game fun, if your a thief/assassin the funnest thing to do is get a long range weapon were your fast with and run up to your enemy, (if more then 2 dont do it), and just swing away. the sound is good in some parts, like if you or an enemy hits a shield it sounds realistic, or if the swords clash. the blood looks kind of like sparkly colored dust, but that makes the game not gore-filled like diablo. well all-in-all i give this game a 5-star rating, or if possible, more. i love this game and will want to take it to the grave with me.(not really, but still worthy enough.) well i hope this review helped you decide to purchase or not to purchase. bye!

A pretty good game, that plays a little like Zelda

Darkstone is a fairly good game, with a good storyline, but the graphics arnt to good. You can take control of a wizard or a sorcerres or even a warrior. The control is easy and there are lots of different camera angles to chose from. You have to talk to villiagers and hermits, to gain clues in your quest to destroy an evil dragon. You also have to buy things from the blacksmith and other stores around the town. A quick hint, buy a shield and a helmet, because in the forest you will need them to battle with the goblins and skeletons that swarn through the woods during the game.

Now I know why there where not any screenshots on the back of the jewel case! If there where, They couldnt sell the game, Terrable graphics, Gameplay so-so, Little thought into quests and lvling up. Frankly, a disgrace to RPGs. Not worth the 10 bucks.

Might I suggest FFVIII?
