A real let down....

Considering the big buck promos this game turned out to be an arena war set that has very weak AI and is more frustrating than fun. After just four 1 on 1 arena multiplayer battles I was worn out. The promos imply a larger scale [much smarter] computer enemy. After doing single player for a while it got boring. The computer throws single tanks or a small squad at you and this is just annoying, instead of fearsome. It requires some strategy to control the resource points but it's a very limited scope of gameplay. I feel deceived by the movie promos, no, I feel lied to.

Awesome doesn't quite describe it

I've been working the demo, and the demo shows a tremendous game. The game itself all but matches most cinematics in terms of quality (the cinematics are downright stunning!), and the characters have almost no pixelization or triangulation. Visually, it is, by far, the most beautiful game I've ever seen. The game play is very realistic. So far, my only complaint is that starting in skirmish mode, I'm still struggling to find ways to fight tanks early in the battle (the sticky bombs are limited in effectiveness), but I expect that will come in time. This definitely goes on my wish list.

I am a strategy game fanatic, like any other strategy game fanatic, I played C&C, Warcraft, Starcraft, Blitzkreig, Civilization etc. I just boughr COH yesterday after playing the demo and i liked it! I was supposed to buy Joint Task Force but the graphics are really awesome! I have a Nvidia 6600GT on my CPU and it's enough for an "ultra" mode. Compared to Joint Task Force which is choppy on gameplay, espacially when units starts to get numerous. I also like tha fact that you can manipulate the views and zoom. That's why as you can see in the images, as if you are playing a first person shooter game. One thing i don't really like about the game is that its using foul languages not suitable for kids. So, be warned. Other than that, this is so far the best ever!

Game starts out strong and then becomes stupid

Very cool graphics and all that.

However, it falls victim to the same thing EVERY single RTS I have ever seen does: the creators start making the game insanely difficult to the point of you either buy their Game Strategy Guide (cha-ching), find some cheat codes, or give up on the game.

*sigh* I had some high hopes but alas... typical RTS game.

A great game.

Company of Heroes is massive step forward, while not a revolutionary step forward, in the now massive WWII sub-genre of strategy games.

The game features mechanics and concepts seen in many previous titles, such as Codename Panzers, Lord of the Rings Battle for Middle Earth II, and various other RTS games. However, where Company of Heroes shines and makes itself known from among the rest is simply by way of it's excellent graphics, real time physics, and presentation.

While being a cut and dry RTS by any standards,Company of Heroes presents itself with awe inspiring physics, meaning objects of all kinds, from houses and crates, to bridges and lamp posts, can get run over, blown up, or shot to pieces, in a very true to life fashion. Soldiers react in a realisitc maner with hundreds of animations. If they come under fire, they will jump and scramble for cover, and immediatly begin returning fire in the process. But this is essentially where Company of Heroes ends it's differences with many other RTS games.

The controls nonetheless consist of nothing more than selecting units, moving them, and ordered them to attack, take territory or retreat, there is simply nothing new here. No new RTS concenpts, no new game mechanics, simple cut and dry RTS management, plus physics.

Company of Heroes not only adds nothing new to the concept of RTS gaming, as I mentioned above the controls, and troop concepts are the same as they were 5 years ago in the game Dawn of the Modern World, it also lacks in depth, and content. There are no more than twelve skirmish and multiplayer maps, and only two sides, Axis, and Allies. Add to this the fact that there is no random map generator, and you have a game that wont keep your attention for more than three weeks, unless you play the same maps over and over again once the campaigne game is done.

In the end, I feel more and more as play that all this has been done before, minus the graphics and physics. Because once the "Shock and Awe" effect of the graphics and phyics wears off, I begin to realize that have stormed the beaches of Normandy in many previous games, that I have fought and crushed the Axis in various other games, and I cant help but feeling that all this has been done time and time again. Had there been more content, I might feel differently.

Nonetheless, this is an excellent game.

To sum up,

Pros,
1) Great Graphics.
2) Great animations,
3) Great sound,
4) Voice Acting.

Cons,
1) No new concepts for RTS gaming.
2) Drab content, (only two sides, and only 15 skirmish maps.)
3)It's all been done before, minus the graphics and physics.

Brilliant

This game is brilliant.

First a little history. I am a 43 year old gamer (and bad speller)who has been around since pong. I have gone the route of Pong, ColecoVision, Commodore 64, Atari ST and then the PC since the 386. Other than FPS (just not my thing, plus I suck) I have played all the different type of games many many times.

Even though these are my initial impressions of the game so far this is easily the most fun I personally have had with a RTS game since Total Annihilation. I have played the Age of Empires, Warcrafts, Starcraft, Rise of Nations, Dawn of War etc etc. All these games were different yet they had the same "feel" about them. COH feels new and that is something that the RTS genre really needed. The bar has been raised to a staggering height.

Why do I enjoy COH over these other RTS games.

1. Strategy: Flanking, Machine guns covering arcs, armor facing, etc. COH has real strategies that make you think instead of how fast you can click around the battlefield(more on this later). The battlefield is destructible which also adds a level of strategy. The brick wall that feeds enemy troops towards a choke point is great until that tank rolls through it giving the enemy another point of access. Wait until you come back to a great defensive point while you were busy at another area and see off-board artillery devistate your position.

2. Atmosphere: The atmosphere in COH's is awesome. The voices (warning crude language), graphics, etc. Every little detail is done to a new level of perfection.

3. A.I.: The A.I. is very good. Your troops will find cover if possible (unlike the report from a previous reviewer). If you have mortar teams back and a rifle company come upon enemy units they will automatically start bombarding that location. the computer player on normal is a very tough opponent for someone at my level in the skirmish mode (I have yet to bet him).

4. Resources: Resources are done like Relics pervious game Dawn of War with a added level of complexity. You have to take over points on the battlefield which will supply you with one of the three types of resources required. What is different is that each point is in a sector and these sectors must be joined back to your base (by being adjacent to another friendly sector). It is possible to lose a sector which will isolate some of your other sectors and their resource income. This adds even more strategy to the game.

5. Map: The map in the game is outstanding. It shows the sectors your troop locations with a symbol what they are, if they are pinned, suppressed, in combat. A excellent way to have a snapshot of what is happening.

Is this game perfect no but what is. Although some might find this game easy I (like most) find it very hard. Even with the advance A.I. I always feel like I am out of control and need to be at 20 places at once. The good thing is that you can pause the game, go through your troops giving them orders, gather your wits and then let all hell break loose again. I have not played online but at my speed I would probably get massacred. Even tough I think the language fits the game perfectly I agree with some that you should have the option of turning it off if you have kids around. I was also underwelmed with the first mission of storming the beach. I know they were trying to ease you into the game but i think they missed the marked and was more confused after the mission than I was before I started.

I highly recommend that you purchase this game, support Relic as they deserve it. Give yourself a treat pick up Company of Heroes.

My God I Can't Stop Playing!!!!!!!!!!

This little masterpieceis everything you want in a real-time strategy. I wasn't a fan of RTS before this gem came out--now I can't wait for the expansion pack that will offer more maps to play single player skirmishes... and perhaps even, weeeeee... a map editor!

The graphics are simply out of this world. I found myself watching a streetfight between the axis and allies and noticing that down there on the cobblestones was a broken piano. It's beautiful little touches like this that makes a game so remarkable. In fact there is all types of debris in the game, all types of house models, so much stuff that I can't wait to see each next map. The game is simply a delight to look at.

The AI really does run for cover, especially when there is a tank or a big gun shooting at them. If not--if they feel confident enough that they can take their adversary--they will stand boldy where they are, not bothering to take cover. I think, dare I say it, each little man has his own personality and will take cover when choosing to do so.

The campain is fun to watch. The game works like a first person shooter, but when the story stops and you get dropped into it, it pulls you back so that you can view the entire battlefield and have control over everything.

I can't belive how fun this game is. I never thought I'd get into a video game like this again, especially an RTS. The only reason why I gave it a less than perfect score was because they didn't provide a map editor. With a map editor, it would have been perfect.

And another thing... Why can't the allies or axis build trenches??? ... I want trenches!

Do yourself a favor and buy this game. It's worth every penny and more.

A very quick review since I haven't played the entire game yet.

First: this is a real fast paced game. You very quickly feel "out-of-control" and trying to keep your head cool is a very hard thing to achieve. Not unlike real war I guess!

Second: it is indeed a great game. It looks spectacular and the one thing you can't help but notice is how well polished it is. Yet another fine product from the fine folks at Relic.

A buying advice: get the regular edition, not the special edition: I got the special edition and the only difference is a small printed "real map" of D-Day, 10 little cards, a slim metalic box, and an extra CD with mostly text info and very little in the ways of content! I feel like I've been cheated.

Absolutely Brilliant

Relic has done it again. Following up on their spectacular Warhammer 40K: Dawn Of War series, the acclaimed RTS developers have delivered what is possibly the greatest micro-RTS ever made. With STUNNING graphics, realistic physics, and sound that makes you feel like you're actually on the front lines, Company of Heroes is a technical wonder.

Above all else, though, this game is FUN. Every minute is packed with excitement and incredibly intense firefights. The two sides are well balanced, unique, and historically accurate. The Command Points system adds another great dimension to gameplay, putting the "S" in RTS.

This was easily the best $50 I've spent since Half Life 2, but don't just take my word for it. Reviews from magazines and websites have all been equally remarkable, with the game receiving some of the highest scores of any RTS ever.

If you enjoy PC gaming at all, and have the rig to play this game, you owe it to yourself to BUY THIS GAME.

Addictive and amazing RTS immersion!!

I'm darn picky when it comes to paying premium price for a new game these days, and there are soo many of these things on the market too! However, this RTS game really stands out with all the elements of a great RTS game. Its got great graphics, sound and gameplay that will keep you coming back for more. Multiplayer is easy to use and its free on the LAN - very nice for house parties!!!

If you are a WWII fan and even a casual RTS player, this is the game for you.
