Beta 1.3 is good. 1.0 should be better

Beta 1.3 is fairly fun already. With the addition of The Brits and the Bazookas it schould be better. Of course you can just dowload it if you already have HL. I reccommend doing that. If you dont have HL this is a good way to get a great game as well as all the mods for HL(downloadable incl; Counter-Strike, Natural Selection, Firearms, TFC)

Quite a good game, but...

This is a very fun game, although I find the preponderance of morons on your average gaming server to weight it down a bit. However, don't buy this package. Go buy Half-Life: Game of the Year edition, it's 19.99 new and 12.99 used. Then download this mod. It is available on the Internet for free, perfectly legally. Further, there are many other great mods for download, and you also get a fantastic single-player game, which, even though it's a bit dated at this point, is still really good. Don't waste your money on this.

Addicting, Fun, cant stop playing

i downloaded Day of Defeat 1.0 today, and i must say that it is a great addition to the Halflife Family. I have played this game since the original mod came out 2 years ago, but this is the best by far. The graphics are astonishing, the gameplay is exciting, and the action will make your adrenaline rush.

This game takes place during world war 2, and you can choose to play as either a German, American, or British. Use all of the famous weapons used in world war 2, including the Kar 98, the Enfeild, and the tompsohn sub machine gun. This game is online only, but the game never ceases to amaze me. if you already have halflife or Counterstrike, you can ...purchase this game right here on amazon.com. If you like Battlefield 1942, but tired of the flying and the slow gameplay, i recomend this game.

P.S. i reccomend you have a cable modem for this game to improve game speed.

Anyone that has had the slightest interest in WWII, buy this

Well, I spent close to about a year of my life helping develop this amazing piece of software, and let me tell you, it's perfect. It all started out as a mod for us and our friends, and now it is it's own game. I can go out and buy it at my local store. In fact I did! I suggest you go out and do the same right now. If you won't take my word for it, ask someone if they have ever played DoD, and if they have, chances are they have good things to say about it. The game is just so fun and intense at the same time. If you've ever wanted to be a part of a movie like Saving Private Ryan, then here's your chance to re-live those kinds of movies in online WWII Action.

Realism Emulation

I have most World War 2 PC games, and I've had Day of Defeat for about a year. Each update to it made it slightly better, and im glad to see it go retail and recieve the attention it deserves.

The thing I like about it most and what is the most impressing about DoD, as opposed to a game such as Battlefield 1942 or Medal of Honor, is Valve's perspective on the atmosphere of these World War 2 battles and scenarios. The game achieves realism more than any other, and the sound effects, visuals and overall feeling are possibly the best for World War 2.

With the new DoD, there is now a map to look at, which will help since I tend to get lost in most of its levels. There are alot more weapons, and the restoration of each different player class being assigned to a general task (For ex. the demolition man may have to blast a hole in a wall in order to create an alternate route to enemy headquarters).

Voice communication is also optional in DoD, so you can talk to other plays on your team via a microphone, about team strategy or just to chat. Besides Counter-Strike, Day of Defeat is the most sucessful Half-Life MOD, and now retail game, and has drawn the attention of many players. I advise the purchase of DoD if you have any interests in World War 2 or are looking for a solid, modern warfare, First-person shooter.

DoD Rocks!!

Day of Defeat is a great multiplayer game. For pure, multiplayer infantry combat action it is light years ahead of Battlefield 1942, a game it is often compared to. The development team has always shown great attention to detail regarding player models, weapons, maps and general ambience. The detailed graphics and sound effects make you feel immersed in the action, as if bullets are really flying by your head. I have been playing this game for over two years now (it began as a downloadable Half-Life mod) and I am still heavily addicted to it. The game has evolved quite a bit in that time, with new additions keeping it fresh and allowing it to remain the most fun PC game I have ever played. Given its track record, there is an extensive community already established for new players to become a part of. There are tons of opportunities for league and clan play, tournaments, and online forums and resources. You should definitely buy this game!!

Great visually, excellent playing

Day of Defeat follows in the footsteps of Counter-Strike, as a uber-excellent mod of Half-Life that has been released as a stand-alone retail product.

Day of Defeat can be played on virtually all computers purchased within the past five years. However, it looks and plays totally modern. It's WW2 based environments are filled with gritty realism. The settings seems realistic, and the weapons are realistic - as realistic as a computer game can get.

The movement and gameplay is well-flowing and uncomplicated. As such, it is easy to immerse yourself into the feeling of fighting a battle, rather than fighting with your computer for which button to press.

The game has a voice-comm system which enables players to verbally talk with their teammates, so plotting our strategies and tactics in real-time adds to the teamplay aspect. Day of Defeat is an online, multiplayer game - so be ready to fight against people, not a computer program. Therefore, there is an exciting psychological aspect - you really need to play smart to outsmart the humans you're competing with. It is endlessly creative because of this human aspect.

There are 14 different "real WW2 battles" at which you can be an infantryman, submachinegunner, sniper, heavy rifle, machinegun or bazoka operator. You can choose to play as an American, British or German soldier.

If you don't have Half-Life and therefore can't grab Day of Defeat off the internet, it is well worth purchasing. You will be able to add custom models and maps as the game's players create them.

Even before DoD was retail, it was the most popular WW2 based game on the internet. The reason being it is a great game. Lots of action. Lots of teamplay. Lots of fun.

Great Game!

This is a great game but you are better off just buying Half-Life and downloading this game along with the other great Half-Life mods out there like Counter-Strike and TFC.

Infinitely better than CS, but...

Day of Defeat is very similar to CS. Not in terms of gameplay mechanics, community, and visuals, but in the path they followed.

Anybody playing the game must undoubtedly know that it was originally a mere modification (that's a real understatement) before it went retail. Because of this, it had a smaller community that would allow them to make additions and changes that would otherwise be very risky. Counter-Strike was also originally like this. Sadly, now that anybody can get their hands on it, it has suffered from being turned into something "n00b" friendly. While this is a blessing to any newcomer, it gives DoD some serious hits.

The tension that existed in the "mod" is no longer there. I used to feel that I was an actual soldier in the trenches, but now I feel like I'm just a spectator. I don't recall soldiers having radars that could pick up grenades, rendering the explosives completely useless. I also don't recall them being able to see their teammates names flashing above their heads. Originally, you needed to be careful about who you shot. With the friendly fire almost always on, you needed to ask yourself "Are my teammates in that room? Is that guy in the shadows a friendly? Should I shoot or not?". Now it's just a blind rushing run of shooting anything without a name tag. Also, the ability to pick up any dropped weapon, while more realistic, allows for some pretty cheap tactics such as the ability to mix-and-match your own weapons loadout without any of the inbalances. *Sigh* I do miss DoD being a beta.

But it's not all clouds and rain. Weapons function realistically and the game has so many features that CS should be put to shame and think twice about calling itself a "realistic shooter". The sound effects and the visuals have taken major overhauls since the previous beta and it's simply amazing. I do not joke at all when I say that the game goes head-to-head (and sometimes wins) against games such as Medal of Honor. This is an amazing achievement when you consider that this is all being done on a modified Quake 1 engine.

However, my conclusion is the same as the one I gave for CS. It WAS an excellent mod. It IS NOW a pretty good mod. But in terms of a retail product, it's average. A better idea would be to buy Half-Life and download it along with Counter-Strike and almost any other awesome mod you can find. That way you pay for an excellent SP experience but get an potentially limitless amount of FREE MP games. Also, with Half-Life 2 hitting shelves in September (and the game is looking to be the best ever), you better catch up on the original story so you're as ready as you can be for the second installment.

Awesome

I've had the download since the day it came out. First time playing it i absolutely hated it, thought it was the stupidest thing ever. After having it for almost three weeks has made me forget how much i hated it at the beginning. If you already have half life or counter strike, just download DoD. IF you don't have either of those two GO OUT AND SUPPORT THE TEAM THAT MADE DOD. you can still download the mods for half life and run them through DoD, it's just a half life game just like all the otehr ones. i just cant wait for a new patch to fix the crosshair though :)
