it's a good action rpg. it starts out with alot of talking in the first hour or two, then the action part picks up. and you only have to upgrade Max's wapones and abilies, which i think is great.

Reluctant Rental

It should be noted that Shining Force Neo is not an RPG, but a real time action adventure game. There is a lot of timing and button mashing to defeat hordes of monsters over and over again. There are countless long, boring cutscene style dialogs between the characters, and a less than interesting storyline. On the plus side, the music is not bad and the graphics are acceptable. There are also special abilities thrown into the combat which make it a little more fun than if it were a pure beat 'em up such as Dynasty Warriors. However, the item system is very convoluted and frustrating to understand; it is not intuitive. If you prefer real time action adventure type games to RPG and turn based strategy games, you might want to give this game a go, otherwise I would have to recommend avoiding this one unless someone is letting you borrow it for free.

Actually, a good / great game, period.

First and foremost, like another reviewer stated, THIS IS NOT your typical Shining series game. With that said, we shouldn't judge this game based off past Shining games. We should just this game based off its own merits.

Sure, we all love and adore the old ways of the Shining era. Those days (as much as I hate to say it) are pretty much over. I don't like it, but it's basically the truth. This is a SEGA game, and involves roles and characters involved with past Shining games, hence the name Shining Force Neo. The Neo represents a non-typical Shining game.

This is an arcade style "hack-and-slash" type game. Yes, the idea greatly turned me off at first, but after you get into the game, you start to see the genius it is. If anything, consider this a break away from the normal tactial RPG you're used to playing lately. The storyline is very good. There are other elements that make this game worth your money as well.

Everyone giving this game 1 or 2 stars is not looking at the entire picture. They probably haven't defeated the game yet. Probably only played for 30 minutes, and decided to label it garbage. That's fair, if you were promised this was your typical Shining Force type game. It is in fact, not, and was never promised to be such. Therefore, people should "diss" the game without playing through it first. If (and only if) you're giving this game 1 or 2 stars because you think it sucks, period, then fine. If you're being biased or unfair because it's nothing like other Shining games, your review is uncalled for.

The end.

Another die hard Shining Force Fan

I would have to agree with the cheap tactics and annoying voice overs in the game. The whole idea of strategy is gone, you can close your eyes and hit a turbo button and most likely win. This is very similar to Shining Tears, which if people liked this game they should look into that one. Atleast they changed part of the name in shining tears so i didnt get my hope up very far.

They should have named this game something else...

This game does not feels or plays like a shinning force game. Yes the original ones might been tactics based but it was the animated attack screens, the battle music, the side quest that made the series so popular. I don't like neo or new it is boring you have to read a lot and listen to the voice overs at the same time, too bad. This should have been called side quest or virtua quest (another big flop). I would not even rent it.

action that stinks

This is supposed to be a good action RPG game. Unfortunately, the game is dominated with too many problems to really be any good. For one thing, the cheapness that occurs when an enemy is attacking you. You can die very easily in this game, which makes for an unentertaining experience.

The storyline is fair and the graphics are decent. But the fact that the action is so incredibly hard really hurts the game. Don't bother.

Great game, little repetetive

This game is great if you enjoy hack and slash adventure games. It has some RPG elements in it as well, but the main point is just to kill tons of enemies over and over. It may get a little repetitious for some people, but I really enjoyed it. The story is OK, but the voice acting is not. You can skip/turn those off though.
