If you enjoy games that are based on the premise of stealth then you will enjoy this game. There is nothing too different from the other Tenchu games in terms of gameplay, but there are some added features in the content department. Now you can design your own character, change his clothes to suit your mission, customize abilities and purchase new skills. It certainly adds a little more depth to the game, and it adds a bit more replay-ability because the faces and costumes differ so much, you can play the game twice and feel like a different character. This game does require a bit of gamer imagination to enjoy. If you can immerse yourself in the game and play by the code of stealth and quickness you'll have way more fun. Instead of testing how dumb the AI is by seeing how many guards you can run past, see how many you can kill with stealth without alerting others. If you've played Tenchu in the past you'll have some major Deja Vu, because it looks like they took the same missions as always and repackaged them i.e. killing Echigoya is the first mission. The developers do need to write a new script, as it seems they keep using the same one. I guess I have become accustomed to the less than par mission design brought on by the Tenchu series. With all the negatives of this game, somehow I always manage to have fun when I play it. If you stop analyzing every aspect of the game and just sit back, grab a beer, and play it, you'll have a good time. Hell if you get drunk enough you might even be able to create a storyline thats worth following. All jokes aside, its not a bad game and I do enjoy playing it. Rent it first though, 60 bucks is a big wad to blow on something you don't like.

A little bit of a disappointment

Lets get this out of the way, first. I am NOT a time-honored Tenchu fan. The only previous Tenchu I have played is Wrath of Heaven, and I didn't finish that.My first gripe proceeds thusly: The graphics were annoying. No seeing-through-walls glitches or anything of the like, but it was more than a mite annoying when my charecter's ponytail kept disappearing under his armor/jacket.Secondly: Its all well and good to be carrying three swords and a pair of sai, but no change-up is ridiculous. A ninja-to (Thats the sword for those of you uneducated in weaponry) is only so fun, and its more of a tool that a sword (breathing tube, wall spike, shurikein-hiding fun). And (both) styles used are not the way a ninja-to is designed to be used. (Misdirection, chicanery, speed, lethality)Personally, I'd like to see what type of stealth-kills can happen when using, say, a kama.Thirdly: and its been said before, the repetive maps. Its a good thing Guard distribution and awareness changed.Fourth: Boss fights? Forced? I Can't stealth kill the big baddie? Thats weak! One boss fight is justified, but the rest aren't.Five: The forced execution of guards to obtain points and golds seems a little off to me. One of the great things about Splinter Cell is it promotes getting in, getting out, and not touching anybody as you do so (Although, truth be told, I'm a fan of knocking people out). This game forces you to do the slice'n'dice.Shouldn't I get extra points for only killing my target, or taking all the bombs and stealing the documents without even being seen, much less without hurting any of the guards, so all their personnel are still tied up guarding for a few extra days? Yay, draining your foe's economic resources! Now for the good stuff. The controls are only a little bit sticky, but once you get used to them, its high-flying, ninja-high-jumping action! Stealth kills, although they lack variety and usefulness (The choke-hold -> pin is pretty much the only sensible move to take), are nonetheless fun to execute, and entertaining to watch as a small guy overpowers and flips over a three-hundred pound warrior before stabbing him through the throat. The variety of places to hide is, as usual, awesome. They would be even better if I could perform a Stealth Kill while hiding under the house, instead of waiting for the target to pass, and then pinning him.Despite all the gripes, the game is still good, awesome, and bloody fun. Pure and simple.

Good fun but should be around 30 bucks

This takes me back to the days of old Tenchu for PS and in many ways is just as much fun, just with a touch up on the graphics. That being said the graphics aren't horrid, but i think they are definately more of old Xbox quality more so than anything close to next gen, although the water affects look pretty good. The game has the basic sneak and run and be stealthy gameplay which made the first one so much fun to play. I myself have never really felt that sneaking up on people and attacking from different locations as being boring, but then again some people may. To me its a lot less repetitive than most FPS's. Another good quality is you don't die when you fall in the water unlikie some games (Pirates Of The Carribean anyone?)you can swim and sneak. Yes there are a few flaws, like your foot standing on nothing while on top of a roof, flying through the top of a wall while using your grapling, just minor issues(but hey this is NOT gears of war) i think this company concenrated more on quantity vs. qaulity. So basically if you like the old one you'll like this one, pretty basic, but nice long levels to keep assassins happy.:)

Not great but Okay

I really had high hopes for this game and wanted to prove the other reviews wrong but in the end I have to agree with most of the other revies and say this game is just okay and probably not worth your dollar unless you're a person who loves to play a game with the same levels and the same bosses over and over until you get sick of it. The first couple levels are pretty good but the game gets really repitious. I read the reviews for this game before buying and I still took a chance with it and was kind of disappointed in the end. I played the very first Tenchu when it came out for sony playstation, so I thought like 10 years later this was going to be an awesome game on 360 but it has too many flaws. Not only do the level bosses look alike, but the story line is repeated almost verbatum throughout levels. As I was playing thru game it got to the point where I didn't care about the story anymore. I wish they put some more thought into the story line to draw the gamer in rather than tune it out. I'd go with Bioshock anyday before this game. Better luck next time Tenchu!

Must Have!

If you like ninja games, this is your game. It is incredably fun to play and it challenging. That said let me tell you that although there are 50 missions there are only 5 or so locations where they take place. The gaurds are in different locations. But despite that this game turned out to be very fun. I almost didn't buy it because of all the flac this game was getting. Trust me it's nowhere near as bad as they say, this game is well worth the money.

This game is amazing, your a cold calculating assassin and you can do it quickly and efficiently. The controls are very easy to operate and you can unlock all kinds of new moves that make sneaking around easier.

My only two minor complaints are, one, the co-op feature isn't through the story play. You can do most of the missions availible with a friend, but there is no story to go with it. Two, the regular combat when you are noticed is not very exciting or intuitive.

Other than that the sneaking, climbing upside down, running across walls, and the assassinations are just superb. Overall a must get, especially if you have been dreaming of a Hitman/Thief type game in a different setting , that you can play with a buddy.

not bad. dont pay full price for it.

overall, this is not a bad game. yes the levels are reapetative. if you like ninjas, and stealth games, you'll dig this. stealth kills are fun no matter how many times you do them. especially grappling hook (mid-air) stealth kills. i wouldn't pay more than 35-40$(new) for it however. multiplayer is ok,it takes forever to find people to join though. so, if you have a hankerin for a ninja stealth game, and have a little money to burn, pick up a copy.

Almost perfect for this niche

I've read a whole lot of negative for this game, no real plot, gameplay problems, etc. But I have to disagree. Sure, it's very easy to run to the outbuilding on some levels and find your target or item you're looking for. Sure you can select an easy diffeculty and complain about the bad battle system-

-but that's not at all what this game's about!

This game is about trying to be a perfect ninja, a silent, unseen, killing machine that wipes out the whole level of badguys without being detected. It's about the tension of stalking a man, and the thrill of bleeding him out and slipping into the darkness in time to see his buddy return from a quick patrol or a trip to the bathroom to see his friend's inverted torso. -all the while you're laughing, while they're freaking out looking for you. Don't try to fight through the enemy like you're Dante, the battle system sucks, but then again, the stealth system in DMC sucked, -see what I'm saying?

I think there isn't another game out there that captures the idea of being a ninja, the way you have to carefully stalk your enemy and take them out in the right order, at the right times, all while doing it flawlessly and sneaking away is often times challenging. This game is part action, and part strategy, sure you could race through each level and fight like a dumb grunt, and complain the fighting sucks, or you can be a little patient, study your enemy, and eliminate them like a trained ninja would. Playing the game in this way, the game is smooth, it's challenging, it's just plain fun.

The game has good graphics, great sound, and the levels are beautifully done, and everything about the controlls are really solid, but when you try "go Dante" on the enemy, it can be a daunting task for sure. Now, to be fair, I've seen guys on YouTube destroying the enemy 1 on 1, but I'm not as good as those guys. For me this game is a solid stealth-killing game, possibly the best. It's the best Tenchu by far anyway. I recommend this game whole-heartedly, it's too much fun to create an awesome looking Ninja and then being let loose on several levels with plenty of enemies to bleed out. Maybe I'm sick, but it never gets old, this one's going to stay in my collection.
