Driver is a waste of time!

If I would have known that this was a 1999 vintage CD I never would have ordered it! The graphics and game play reflect the fact that it is outdated. Control of the vehicles seemed very difficult and unrealistic.

Good game? bad game? I don't know!

Hey, maybe this is a good game, but maybe if I got a chance to play it I would know. The game is completely messed up. If I want to just drive around in a city, the game freezes before I can even get out of the parking garage! I don't know if it's my computer, because, I bought it, then I returned it because it kept freezing, and got another one. Then, I get home and what do you know? It still freezes! Did anyone else experience this?

Great control, Poor AI

Driving the car around towns modeled after famous cities is really cool, and the smooth handling of the car is sweet. You can even play movie director, and adjust camera angles to make a cinematic sequence like the old "Starsky and Hutch" car chases of the 70's.

The big problem is that the artificial intelligence behind the game is really dumb. The other cars seem to wander aimlessly through red traffic lights, and police cars will chase after you for no reason whatsoever.

Also, most of the missions senselessly require you to race across town to pickup someone (usually a criminal) within a short amount of time, which will almost certainly attract the police to come chase you, even before the real crime is committed.

Another disappointment is that after passing a pretty cool skills trial to prove that you are a worthy driver, you can never really use those fancy driving maneuvers, like the 360, to evade a police chase.

The bottom line is that this is a great driving game from the look and feel of it, but the the reality of the simulation is really, really dumb. The missions are pretty disappointing because they force you to drive like a maniac to evade the police instead of using some sort of strategy to remain low-key.

fun driving, hard missions

I only got this game a few days ago, so I can't really comment on the long-term fun value of it, but so far it has been fairly enjoyable.

This game's strongest point is the feel of driving the car. The designers were going for movie car-chase style controls, and they nailed it. Even using the keyboard, it's possible to do every "advanced" driving maneuver in the book. I often go out and get in my car after playing this game and feel like I'm still playing.

The graphics look good with a decent graphics card, especially the night-driving with the extra effects turned on. I know that's more a graphics-card effect than a game effect, but I think it's nice that last-year's graphics card running with all the options on "Ultra" hides the graphics' age, and games on my year-old PC look as good as on a PlayStation2. I didn't like the fact that the road layouts could only make right-angle turns.

The missions in this game are . . . tedious. Maybe once I've gotten better at controlling the car they won't be so much, but it took a 2-hour playing session to pass the "driving test" to get into the missions, and after 3 days of playing the game, I'm still having a hard time completing the first "job". I'm not an expert game-player, but it seems like they should be easier, at least to start out with. Some hard-core gamers probably like it that way, though. (but why would a hard-core gamer be getting a 3-year-old PC game off the bargain rack?)

Oh, and I LOVE slightly-old, bargain-priced games like this one. The system requirements are 1/16 of current top-notch gaming PC's, so last year's PC still plays it like a pro. And the price is great, too!

One other thing: Wal-Mart and Target have this on the shelf for the same price, so unless you got free shipping, you might want to pick the game up elsewhere.

It's not a fun game if you don't have the cheat codes

Too bad I couldn't get to the first mission because the parking lot was so dark I couldn't see where I was going. So I just raced around and entered cheat codes to outrace the police. I was dissappointed also about the game and how much it was publicized to be the best. I found that more companies make demo software to make the game look better than it really is. I hope I can write a better review some day stating that a game is really great.

Great graphic-wise, but lacking in afew areas.

Driver is no doubt one of the best auto games I've come across when it comes to graphics, realism, etc. etc. The cities do look like cities with your crowded streets and traffic systems. And as far as the levels being the same as the cities in real life, they DO resemble them with the streets/landmarks/etc. Plus the physics are pretty realistic as well as far as I can tell. But, lone behold, there are problems, though some people may be able to tolerate them more than others. First off, the cops DO NOT act like cops in real life! They drive more like psychopathic maniacs than law enforcers. Ever watch one of those police chase shows on TV? I guarantee you would not see the cops attempting to ram a suspect head on going at 80 miles per hour on one of those shows...not to mention if you DID hit someone head on going that fast your car would be totalled (in the game if this occurs, it takes around a quarter of your damage meter) plus you'd be dead. But I suppose if the game were THAT realistic, it wouldn't be fun, now would it? And what ever happened to keeping the innocent safe? The cops cause more accidents than I do, for crying out loud! The other cars also pretty much move at the same speed throughout the levels, even on the freeways (30 or 40 mph). Well, enuff of the complaints.

Whenever I play this game, i usually just run from the cops thru Miami and San Francisco, since I'm too lazy to even bother with the Undercover stuff. The game is actually quite challenging (bad news for me...heheh), so if you're up for it, go right ahead. I'll just say that you will probably like this game if u buy it, so if you are a fan of auto games and the sort, be sure not to miss this one if you haven't played it already!

Fun and entertaining- for a while.

This game was very fun. Exciting police chases, crashing police cars, and flying dirt and stop signs. You get two cities at first, San Fransisco and Miami. I was suprised by how big the cities are.
There are more bad things than good things, unfortunatly.
When you want to just drive around town, you can only use on car. The steering on it is like a wet sponge, and the top speed is only 88 mph.
Graphics are so-so, and there are no real weather effects, like rain, snow, etc etc.
If you must buy it, get it cheap. it's good, but there is better.

does it work for windows me (millenium edition)

This game is fun. The driving is awesome and its fun to smash a cop into a nearby mini-van, BUT this game has bugges. You can be knocked outside the world and drive off the map! I once drove so far off the world that the game crshed itself. The graphics are O.K but it has a bad case of bugs. If you use the super fast cheat and the freight train cheat (you need to beat the game to get cheats) and you drive at full speed into another car you will see what i mean. This game is very fun, has ZERO replay value, has a million bugs, but is still fun. If you want a game with tons of cop chases and want to make your own car chase "movie" (the editor is bugged too), then this game is for you

OK

I WOULD`VE GIVEN IT 5 STARS EXCEPT THE BUILDINGS ARE 2D. THE REST IS GREAT.
