Well, I've been flying on the PC since the monochrome days and I haven't seen a simulator with AI as smart as those seen in IL-2 Sturmovik 1946.

The little buggers are harder to shoot down then any other simulator I have owned. As soon as one of the rounds from your plane fly past them they take evasive action. They just don't jink either !! !

I have TRACKIR 4 Pro/Track Clip Pro and IL 2 works perfectly with it/them.

I have owned and still own quite a few sims:

ATF Gold (Jane's)
Fighters Anthology (Jane's)
World War II Fighters (Jane's)
Longbow 2 (Jane's)
F15 (Jane's)
F/A-18 (Jane's)
FS2004 (with every add-on you can think of)
FSX (A huge disappointment)
Falcon 4.0 Allied Force

I will also agree, Sturmovik is a simulator and not a game.
The physics are awesome! ( pretty convincing)
ATF Gold and Fighters Anthology are games as far as I am concerned simply because their flight physics are much to be desired.

I will enjoy Sturmovik for years to come. :D
And I am sure you will too.

I am 40 y/o btw. Does it matter? Yes.
You can answer the "Why?"

See yuh, Gotta Fly!

This is the top gun fighting simulation, at least of any I have tried, with the possible exception of DERA's Joust. I like to actually fly the aircraft myself and use my skill, rather than a missile, to shoot down my opponents. So for me this is a wonderful game. The realism seems to have been stepped up a notch since the previous version, the harmonization of the guns seems to be better.

One of the few unrealistic elements is the gun sight, early WWII fighters had lead calculating gun sights, with this you have to estimate the lead yourself, which can make moderately long turning shots quite challenging. Weapon effects aren't perfect, but they are good for a game. In the real world, if you put a one second burst of 20mm canon shells in to a plane at short range then it's over; one of my friends did it in the pacific war, he said that the moment he started firing the Betty came apart.

I've always liked the sounds in IL2 and this continues to be satisfactory, both the engine and gunfire sounds are realistic.

The choice of aircraft is excellent, with many marks of the world's best WWII fighters and bombers. Each is very well implemented with good flight dynamics and weapon effects. This game does a very good job of showing the performance variation between the different aircraft, this lets you explore the different fighting styles that were employed by their pilots. For example the canon armed Hurricane is my favorite gun platform, it turns well and is heavily armed with accurate canon, it can take anything it can get close to. The P47 is fast in a straight line and adequately armed, but in a turning fight it bleeds energy and the 50s aren't enough for a decisive 'lucky shot'. The late model Me262s can scrap a B25 in a moment, but if they take a couple of rounds in the engines then their day is over. The Russian aircraft are built like tanks, so a machine gun armed early version of the Spitfire or Hurricane can blaze away at an IL2 all day and never cause important damage.

This is a wonderful and highly addictive game.

This is a fun game!

After reading so many great reviews, I decided to purchase this game. It is very well done! What I like most is that you can set it to whatever level you want. Don't want to deal with stalls or blackouts or whatever and just shoot down planes? Turn them off. Want to deal with the whole enchilada involved in flying? Leave them on. The graphics and sound are great. You can set up your own missions- I just set up one where I have an "Allies v Axis" fantasy situation, where Russian, British, Polish and American planes are on a mission to destroy an airfield, and we're opposed by German, Italian, Romanian and Japanese fliers. What I really like is the "1946" options where you can fly experimental aircraft that never actually flew during the real war, but were in development. My only complaint is the lack of a manual. Yes, there's a file on the disk, but I would really, really prefer to have a hold-it-in-your-hands indexed manual. I have a feeling this game has abilities that I don't know about, and might never find, without a manual. I'd pay a few bucks more to have one. Which leads to the price- you cannot beat it for the price!

Great sim...

Let me give you an example to show you how good this game is. I set the stage with 4 friendly and 4 enemy planes. I'm not an expert on these games so I set the difficulty low. Then we started flying in clear blue skies. I saw 4 dots in the horizon, knowing that all hell will break loose in a few minutes I increased my altitude to hit them from above. Did so too and downed one immediately. But funny thing was I didn't see any flames or smoke, the plane just went down. Here is the thing, I love to watch replays, and this game has an mamazing replay function. After the game I turned on replay and realised that during my attack only 3 or 4 of my bullets hit the enemy, one of which hit the pilot, killing him instantly, thus causing the plane to crash.

I played a few flight sims and this game is so much better and detailed than others. I can tell you so many stories just like the one above but it's one of those experiences that you have to live it to feel it. Just set your own game and everytime you'll see a new thing, oh and don't forget to record it because you can keep your replays, fun ain't it...

This one will be a classic

If you're into flight sims especially WWII, than this one is a must have for your collection. Great graphics, however, it does have a steep learning curve. The sim is adjustable to allow "nuggets" to expert to enjoy it, totally worth the money.

JUST GREAT!
THIS FLIGHT SIM IS A PERFECT UPGRADE TO THE OTHER IL-2 Sturmovik: FLIGHT SIMS. IT CAN STAND ON IT'S OWN AND CORRECTS MOST OF THE OLD FLAWS, BUT SO FAR I ONLY NOTICED ONE ERROR, AND IT'S WITH THE TA 152, ONLY THE LEFT ROCKET FIRES.
ANOTHER PLUS IS MORE OBJECTS AND SOUNDS (TIRES SQUEEL ON LANDING)ETC.
THE UNIQUE VAST ARRAY OF JETS,PLANES & WEAPONRY IS THE BEST ATTRACTION.

great sim

This is one hell of a sim, awesome variety, great graphics, and to learn what it was like to fly these planes is beyond explanation. If you have a decent computer and HOTAS, get this sim, it's remarkable. Note: if you have a powerfull computer pay attention to Hardware Settings section of the manual found on the CD,it will tell you how to go to the config.ini and boost the graphics of trees and water. This sim is awesome and it's cheap. Get it!

The best comper game period!

Even after nearly four years, the Forgotten Battles series remains (in my opinion) the best flight-simulator on PC to date. I'd even go so far as to say it's the best computer game altogether. Although you need all the editions that came before it to install 1946, it's well worth the money. (To elaborate - you need Il-2Sturmovik Forgotten Battles, Ace Expansion Pack, Pacific Fighters, [then come several patches,] Pe-2 Peshka Divebomber, Sturmoviks over Manchuria, and finally 1946.) Although after reading this long list you might say NO WAY am I buying all that! you'd actually be mistaken as you can buy the complete collection (Forgotten Battles, AEP, Pacific Fighters) here IL2 Sturmovik Series Complete Edition (DVD) but the Pe-2 Peshka adition is only available for download (as far as I know) directly from Ubisoft.
A word of warning: you will NOT be able to play the simulation with the keyboard (it IS possible but incredibly inconvenient and inaccurate) so buy a good joystick if you don't already have one.
Another word of warning: don't buy joysticks from Logitech.

This Game is the Best out there. It is best when played on Hyperlobby against other players from around the world. To me is much more than a Game because a lot of the missions are actual recreations of battles. When you fly you fly History. Playing the game offline is fun but playing it online is unreal you never know what to expect one minute your flying your p47 in route to the target area and then out of no were a 109 is on your 6. To me it is the best flight sim ever!!!!!!!!!!!!

This is absolutely Fantastic!

Hello Folks,

My family and I used to play IL2 Sturm all of the time. You can make up your own maps, missions, scenarios very easily.

The 1946 version is the entire IL2 series and throw in 32 new planes and 200+ missions, etc., and you have a mind-blowing game for only $20.

You absolutely cannot beat the value and versatility of this game.

I am now installing the 1946 game in my Mom's PC, and she is going to be in store of a real treat!

Regards,

JohnYoga
