I havent finished the game but I really like it bacause you can control your characters when not in battle mode and it has the complexity I love in an RPG. The story is great even though I never played the original and from what i've read it has its own story line. I consider this game to be intermediate to advanced. The graphics are awesome and the animation is very engaging. What can I say just get it, and it also arrived within 5 days.

I picked this up, having been a fan of the original Disgaea years ago. I'm happy to say that this is an excellent port of the original, with some great bonus content added. Gameplay is nearly perfect, with some very welcome features that make gameplay speedier than before, such as allowing users to skip lengthy battle animations. For those with too much time on your hands, you can enjoy leveling up your characters along with leveling up your weapons and accessories until the cows come home. Not really for the casual RPG gamer, but statistic-loving gamers will be completely in heaven.

This is a deep game

This game takes a lot of time but it is fun while you are logging the hours away. I'm a fan of anime and love the subbed versions of series and this game comes with a neat feature that you can have the original voice recordings as you play the game. The English ones aren't bad but it is nice to switch it up every once in a while. The game is solid. It has been a while since I've played something that kept me going for so long. There is strategy and then so much more to explore. You get more game for your buck with this one.

Endless Fiddling

This game allows you to fiddle with your characters endlessly. You can spend hours and hours improving their skills, their stats, their levels, their abilities, their equipment, etc. The universe is surreal and humorous enough to be a nice bridge between the battles you fight, but it doesn't get in the way of the game play. If you like optimizing all the little details of your characters and you like deciding which particular aspects you want to spend hours improving, then this game is the game for you. The only game better for endless fiddling is Disgaea II (where they improved the balance and breadth of the characters)

I don't play the game myself. I bought it for my 13-yr-old son for his PSP. He really likes it, as does his 17-yr-old brother. It was a good Christmas present.

I don't like SRPG's...but I LOVE this one!!!

This is a great game that will keep you interested for hours on end. At first you may find it frustrating when you walk around seeing that all the other characters are on level 70 and you're only on level 1 but it will give you something to work towards. Great visuals along with a great sound track aid the wonderful gameplay. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

WOW, something that can beat out Final Fantasy Tactics

Been playing this for 2 days non-stop, just can't put it down. Tons of customizable options. The dialect is hilarious, graphics good, sound is good. Usually there's pros & cons about the game, but to now really can't find any bad aspects yet. If you like strategy RPGs at all, this is a must have.

Will update it more after more playing time, now I must get back to the game!

Facts fist: this is a port of the original Disgaea for PS2. There are some new features: an extra game mode where you play as Etna rather than Laharl, widescreen graphics, and some new boss battles (including one with the main characters from Disgaea 2). Still, it's the same main game.

But with a game as good as Disgaea, this is no problem at all! The price for the PSP version is similar to the PS2 original, but you get a few more features and the chance to play it on the go - a feature you'll greatly appreciate if you become as hooked on the game as I have. Nippon Ichi specialize in strategy RPGs, and out of all their excellent releases, Disgaea is probably the best and the most welcoming to new players.

If you love the original Disgaea, or you are a fan of Nippon Ichi in general, you really don't need to read this review. But for new players, here's a rundown. Disgaea is an isometric strategy RPG, meaning that the story unfolds by playing through sequential turn-based battle stages. If you've played Final Fantasy Tactics, probably the definitive SRPG, it has similar basic game mechanics. In Disgaea, you start with two main characters (Laharl and Etna) in your party. However, the only way to progress is to build a strong roster of characters of different classes, each with different special abilities. Leveling up characters in the basic classes, such as warrior and mage, gradually unlocks new and more powerful classes. The main storyline battles are tough, and you'll need to do a lot of leveling to play successfully; however, this is much more enjoyable than in a typical RPG, because SRPGs naturally specialize in battle mechanics. Approaching each battle correctly requires considerable thought and forward planning - this is not a quick action-fix game, but it is incredibly rewarding to build up a roster of strong team members and to learn to take full advantage of their abilities.

The graphics in Disgaea might be disappointing to fans of next-gen 3D games. The dialogue between characters features some excellent (if static) artwork, but the game itself is entirely sprite-based. If you can get past this - and the adjustment should take no time at all - you'll find that what the game lacks in visuals, it gains in gameplay, music, and writing. This is one of the funniest, most well-written and translated games I've ever played - and, as usual with Nippon Ichi games, the voice acting is excellent. Sounds like a small thing, but believe me, so many games get so badly wrong. The music is fun and catchy, and the basic story provides a constant motivation to win each battle. Disgaea is a complete timesink, I admit, and after 100 hours of gameplay you still won't have seen everything the game has to offer. But if you're willing to devote some time, and some brain power, this is one of the most fun and rewarding games on the PSP. Definitely recommended!

Amusing, Deep Game

I was hesitant to pick this game up, as I'd read so many reviews that highlighted its comedic aspects over its gameplay, but I am happy to say that I do not regret my purchase. The comedy is there and is sometimes actually amusing, but the gameplay takes center stage as far as I'm concerned.
I'm a huge fan of turn-based strategy (along the lines of Final Fantasy Tactics and Jeanne D'Arc), and this happily fits comfortably into that category. The gameplay here is deeper in some respects, as you get up to 10 characters per battle, and you can switch them in and out mid-battle if you like. You can also throw characters across the battlefield to reach enemies who might not otherwise be accessible, with some character classes having longer throwing ranges than others.
And yes, there are loads of character classes, becoming accessible as your existing characters make higher levels. And there are what feels like an infinite number of different weapons, healing items, and armors available, all of which can be upgraded by adventuring within the item itself. This adds a level of depth and re-playability to this game that is truly staggering. And this from someone who's played FF:Tactics and Tactics Ogre all the way through numerous times.
I still admit that I enjoy those two games a bit more than Disgaea, though. Their storyline is more enjoyable, and the sense of investment in the character's individual progressions in those games is stronger to me (in Disgaea, for example, your characters only change class (aka transmigrate) once you've reached extremely high levels). I also don't enjoy the "lobbying of the senate" action that must happen every time you want to move up a level in equipment inventory and such that is necessary in Disgaea. It makes sense from a story pov, and I applaud its uniqueness, but it's sort of distracting overall for me. That said, the infinite depth of adventuring, larger amount of characters per battle, and huge inventory of weapons and such are huge positives for this title. I'm glad I own it and will certainly keep it and play for years to come.

WOW!
This was my first thought when I saw how High you can level up.
to the 10's of thousands! this game like it's ps2 brother has a nearly endless number of things for the "loot mongers" like me out there and soooo much customization it is insane'
top this with actual reasons (such as maxing out character stats) for levelling up into the 9999 range only then is your character's potential fully unlocked!
you also level up your weapons and armor.
truly the voice acting is top notch and the hilarity of some of it is really good. as another reviewer said usually there's pro's and con's to every game but at this time even after having beaten disgaea I can not think of ANY bad points about this game.
IF you are a loot monger and into twinking out your character to the absolute maxium this game was MADE FOR YOU!
if you prefer the intense action of titles such as W.O.W. or diablo this Might not be for you but for anyone that liked Final Fantasy Tactics well, this seems to do all of that FAR BETTER then tactics : war of the lions has done. plus an unlockable etna mode that let's you find out what would have happened if etna killed laharl. totally as good as the ps2 version with so many bonuses it's a must have game of the year!

Graphics: 5 Stars! very cool anime graphics with a japanese flair (plus cool demons!)

Sound: excellent voice acting and humorous dialogue 5 stars!

Fun: A Blast! 5 Stars!

Ease of play Vs FF Tactics: better learning curve and does not end just as you get addicted actually I could be item hunting till this time next year!

Overall: 5 stars! Simply the best tactical RPG out to date and this coming from me a huge FF Tactics fan is a Big Endorsement of how well this game was made and how much consideration for the players the creators put into this Gem. buy it now while it's retail or pay a few hundred later. you were warned!
