Railroad Tycoon II

Railroad Tycoon II is a real time strategy game by Poptop software with complex interactions, interesting graphics and lots of thinking. The gameplay reminds me of Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon, In which you play a tycoon who control the trains, buses, planes and ships in the tycoon world. In RRT2 you play as the railroad baron and control the train transportation, Buy and sell stocks, set the train routes, lay the railway tracks, stations and take over companies. There are lots of real life trains and cities. The gameplay is quite good, It takes a while to learn to play and be good at it. RRT2's graphics are very good, The towns are very beautifully desinged, There are lots of beautiful terrain and real looking buildings, The world looks real, with rivers, forests, snow and hilly mountains. RRT2's screnario's are also very well desinged and a lot fun to play, It also comes with a screnario editor for you to create your own screnario's. Railroad Tycoon II has got a clumsy interface, It is very hard to lay the tracks with the mouse. There are other annoying factors like, You don't get enough money, It's hard to manage things when you have a lot of trains and stations, You need to pay a lot of attention at the stock market to make money ect. Railroad Tycoon II is a very good game but quite hard to play. If you like this game get Transport Tycoon, It is more intresting, lot more fun and quite easy compared to this.

You Will Never Be Board From It

I bought this game not knowing anything about it, or having seen it. I read what you see before, and that's it. THIS GAME IS INCREDIBLE....I AM ADDICTED....If you don't want to play any of the scenarios provided, and there seems to be an endless amount of them starting from 1830 on to today and beyond, you can BUILD YOUR OWN WORLD, oceans, rivers, streams, etc., mountains, hills deserts, marshes, cities, towns industries, complete with sound for every enviornment, jungles, deserts, snow peaked mountains with wind, superb...put all the industries where you want and run your trains wild.

This is a railroad fanatics dream.....this game presents a real world enviornment with other great Railroadmen of the world, that you can compete with, and they can be shrewd if you set the setting to expert, they will short sell your stock, and cut in on your business, or merge with other companies to defeat you, or you can be fired for not performing your duties properly, LOL ...WOW!

I highly recommend this game, run electric trains, whatever...this game is teriffic...authentic sounds, authentic business, authentic trains, cars, EVERYTHING..... THIS GAME IS GREAT.....not like the BORING SHOOT AND KILL GAMES. Thanks Poptop software, it's a hit.....Keep up the great work!

The game is in depth and full of details, but not unnecessarily complicated, in fact I call it VERY INTUITIVELY SET UP....thanks again Poptop! I am looking forward to more great stuff from you guys.

I really, really wanted to like this game...

... but ultimately decided I never would.

The original Railroad Tycoon game ranked as one of my all-time favourite computer games. I wasted countless hours laying track well into the night and cursing computer players when they started buying my stock. When I discovered RTII for the Mac, I purchased it immediately...

And found a game that proves that bells and whistles aren't always good things.

RTII has a very pretty, forced perspective map of the area in which tracks are being layed, but the nature of the map makes it neigh-impossible to predict exactly where the tracks are going to end up unless one practices extensively. In other words, one has to *work* just to figure out how to play the game. And, as far as computer games go, that's not my idea of fun.

Despite not being able to play the game, I'm giving it Two Stars. It's pretty, the sound effects are nice, and the idea of laying tracks in Africa and Asia appeals greatly to me. In concept, the game *is* superior to the original RT and takes advantage of the advances we've seen in technology in recent years... but the designers (or developers, I'm not sure who to blame) just didn't know when to quit.

I think I could have enjoyed this game immensely if it had had been presented with an old-fashioned top-down/2D view of the play surface rather than enduldge themselves in making the game prettier. Maybe that could have been an option that could have been provided--I don't know enough about computer programming to know if such a thing would have been possible. As things stand, 'Railroad Tycoon II' is just taking up space in my game CD rack.

One of the all-time best!

I used to play the original RR Tycoon all the time, but gave it up as graphics and technologies moved past it...Now I'm addicted again, because Microsoft has this sequel out. It fixes all the complaints I used to have about the original, and adds many new features, so I don't feel like I am playing the same old game. This game is so simple, a child could play it. However, it provides the opportunity to set higher levels of difficulty. The graphics and sound are great, and there isn't a single thing wrong with this game. Go buy it!

Railroad Tycoon II has extremely well done graphics. Unfortunately, this game is a system HOG. If you have an older i.e. pre-1999 system or plan on playing this on a laptop as I did, forget it. It requires higher resolution than even most brand new laptops have. If you have 800X600 on your system, forget it. It won't run.

It says it will run on a 133. Don't bother as it will hang as your game progresses. This is an excellent game but not for the older desktop.

Track laying is tedious and the most boring part of the game.

Proves strategy doesn't always involve bloodshed

Strategy games are often games that require you slice your enemy into bits, blow up his tanks, and mow down his peasants. It's so wonderful to find a fantastic strategy game that is at its root a monetary war, instead of a physical one.

In Railroad Tycoon II you being with the famous B&O Railroad, connecting cities in the northeast corridor of the US. You begin with single track, determining which city needs which goods, and how to give each city what they want while managing your finances. As you get more money you can build larger stations, buy bigger engines, beef up your track system, and more.

Cities will offer you money in exchange for building track out to them, and the more cities you connect, the more types of goods you have to offer to other stations on the line. As you move on in the game you can move on to different areas, even building a network of rails across Europe. You get annual reports with your finances, can purchase stock in your own company or from competitors. You can buy farms and factories, invest, take out loans, but if you wish, you can simply ride the rails and move goods.

The graphics are great for a game from '98. They are done in an organic, old style, with old videos showing events of the times. You can build telegraph poles to speed station turnaround, hear about recessions and regrowth of economies, issue bonds, attempt mergers. The political climate even affects where rights are cheap or expensive to buy. It's a lesson in history as well as a challenging mental exercise!

Some of the more advanced features are a bit difficult to figure out, but there are numerous web sites out there that will quickly guide you through those situations. For most of the game, it's incredibly easy to learn, and the status screens tell you at a glance what is going on.

You can even customize your own map, and play in another country or in a mythical situation of your own devising.

I recommend this highly as a great strategy game for all ages that you actually come away with knowing more than you did when you began.

History, economics, geography and fun too.

Build your railroads across the USA and learn while you earn or go broke trying. If and when that ever becomes easy then try building through the mountains of Korea or China. A wonderful game I still enjoy and love to teach to my grandkids. If only gradeschool geography class could be as interesting!

Awesome

Someone gave me this game as a gift and I must say, it is one of few gifts I actually kept and got enjoyment from. I have been playing this game for a long time now and can play it at anytime because there is always something new to learn and new ways to get rich and rule the RR business. This game is detailed, graphically pleasing, and requires some gamer skill. I am sure you can handle it if you are reading this review.

This is a great game. The sound is good and so is the graphics. If you like RTC you will like this game. It is a hard game but it is fun. You can play the stock market. There are all kinds of trains. There are some cheat codes so you can get more money. I very highly recommend this game.
