Be ready for the learning curve

First, the people who have this game at the bottom of their closets are right. Unless you have just the right vid card, monitor, and memory you can forget it. Second, what comes in the box is incomplete. You will need the version .973 from the Battle of Britain Developers Group. There is no key card (CFS@ comes from Amazon with no manual or card) so you will have to get on the forum there and ask where to download the most up to date, and then you will have to deal with the the fact that the European keyboard needs to be hand marked to match yours, if your from the USA. On the plus side the people on the forum are very helpful.

You will find the learning curve daunting. If you want to fly Spitfires and you start learning on them, you will probably fail. You need to master the Hurricane first. The flight sim is harder than CFS2 and IL-2. B-17 has a tough learning curve but that has to do with it's complexity and all its quirks. BoB has a tough curve because of the flight sim. I've been "flying" sims since Lucas Films BoB. Then the Dynamix trio and the stuff from Microprose (all DOS). Picking up again a few years ago in Windows I found that much has changed. But I have yet to meet a learning curve as steep as BoB.

My copy too sat at the bottom of the closet until my old machine fried and I had to get a new one. So far I haven't had the CtD problem, but if I do it will be back to the BoBDG forum.

You have to be really interested in the Battle of Britain to buy this one. So don't buy unless your frustration level is high. Of course the BoB add on for CFS2 is a joke (misnamed for one), and I don't know of any others.

I own and play quite a few sims. I thought this would be a vast improvement over "European Air War" but I was wrong about this. Very, very disappointed

...It is still difficult to fly and even experienced simmers would be advised to start with the "novice" flight model. The AI is a lot better than in, say, CFS2 but it's not perfect. The best thing to do is to get the aftermarket patch form BDG (Battle of Britain Developers Group) which solves almost all the problems whilst improving the graphics and gameplay and is a free download. Check at SimHQ.com for details. The overall improvements to the game, along with the dynamic campaign, suddenly make this worth having...as long as you're prepared to spend a lot of time setting it up.

Waste of money!

I can't even review the game, because I never could get it to work properly on my computer. Even after receiving tech help. My mistake is not checking these reviews before purchasing.

The Pauly Shore of Flight Sims - too flaky for my taste

Judging by the 25+ reviews here, a few people who buy this game will find it runs on their machines, and love it, and many many more will find it plain doesn't work, even after much searching for fixes on the web. I fall in the latter group - I can't control my planes since any throttle or flight stick movement (on my DIGITAL joystick!) causes extreme roll and pitch. In chase view I can see my flaps constantly jittering up and down even when I have my hands folded in my lap. Minor throttle adjustments cause extreme rolls to the left or right (i.e. not torque). I can fire up IL2 or EAW or Jane's WWII fighters or Jane's Attack Squadron and fly with the eagles but with BoB in the CD tray I'm just another spastic kamikaze. In the classic 'space-sim' Wing Commander 3 there is a particular mission where, should you choose to have a second drink at the bar, your joystick inputs are reversed for your next flight. BoB nicely simulates flying after barrels of ale or gallons of schnapps but I can't find the 'Inebriation off' toggle in the setup screens. How a modern game can interpret digital stick and throttle inputs as if coming from an analog stick with flaky pots is puzzling, but realize that if you buy this game you run a real risk of getting an unplayable sim in exchange for your money.

Excellent Flight Sim...

BoB is the best Flight Sim I have ever played...

For my comparison I also own MSFS 2002(Microsoft Flightsim),
IL-2 Sturmovik and Mig Alley, which I love too...but I find myself playing with BoB most of my time

Some people found there to be a problem with stutter, I have been lucky in this repect...has I never had this problem ! But if you find that you do then the BDG (BoB Developer Group) has fixes and suggestion to run the game at its optimum :) You can also find usefully information and Mods (Fixes/Texture/skinning/models)
...

The BDG also has its own site, with the latest news: ... Note* the BDG is a free not for profit group, who are just happy developing BoB to new levels. The BDG formed after Rowan released the sourse code to the public so that they could make modifications etc in the code... I'm a member of the BDG and that is possible why I give it 5 stars rating ! But just try it you'll see that I'm right :)

If you are a fan of the period, you ought to try this. There is a very helpful flightsim community at ... and they have worked through all the major issues and have released a large number of modifications to enhance the game visually.

BoB realistically recreates England and the huge scale of events of the Summer of 1940 in full authenticity. There is no other title that allows you to manage an entire airfleet (Luftwaffe) or the whole of RAF figher command, and then jump into the cockpit of your Spit or Hurri to face over 200 enemy aircraft. The attention to detail is stunning, and since the game's source code has now been released it is now being developed and continues to mature.

Once you have it running it is quite unique.

Superb.

This title sucks big time. I can not get it to let me fly the planes. It's looking for some kind of a dll. file. bob.dll or something like that. It should not have to be rocket science to make these games work right. I gave it to a frind at work and he could not get it to work on his pc.

Super War Game for Super Players

Got started this week after buying a joystick-thought it would make gaming easier. Have found BOB to have great potential, but poor printed instructions that just don't tell you "what to do"....Got a lot of "flying" concepts- but no help whatsoever on hjow to land, what to do omnce you get a plane in the sky--and nothiong about how you keep it there! Same complaint about a lot of adult games. They assume you know the recipes and the sequences to follow....A fortune will be made by someone who translates BOB into down to earth lingo for us smart grown-ups who cannot figure it all out.
