Very good RPG

4 Rating: 4, Useful: 3 / 4

This game is right up there with Arcanum for this year's single-player CRPG of the year, in my opinion. The only reason it doesn't receive 5 stars is due to some control interface issues that could have been better (not as much mouse control as I would have liked). Regardless of a few odd/clunky interface design choices, this is a top notch CRPG. The story is genuinely interesting, character skill/stat development is totally in your control, and its open-ended gameplay is refreshing in contrast to how many watered-down wannabe CRPGs there are that try to hold your hand like a child through the story.

The Best RPG in 2001 so far!

Finally non-German speaking Role Playing Fans can enjoy a great RPG experience - ... we rated the game with an overall score of 90%! A must for every RPG Fan, Gothic is the RPG that Ultima 9 should have been!

Poorly paced

The fact is that I'm tempted to rate this game even lower than I have. But I have to give some credit where due - the scope of the game is impressive, the graphics, though mixed, are effective overall... generally, the sense that there is a real and entire world available for the player to explore makes me *want* to like this game. And I've tried for hours to do so.

But there's no getting around the facts that a) the control scheme is absurd, making combat or even simple inventory management near impossible, b) the acting, particularly by your own character, is so bad that you'll cringe before selecting responses to dialog, and c) the pacing is so slow that you'll spend the first few hours either engaging in the more or less random combat experience, or waiting for something... ANYTHING to actually happen.

I paid retail for the game because I was excited to see a new 3D single player CRPG. But this game just makes me furious. Save your money, save your time, save your patience for something else.

I really wanted to like this game, but

The controls are the worst configuration ever invented. And it is boring monotonous and repetitive. I have yet to get past the first level of experience...and I have been playing for 4 hours and only have 170 exp. Inventory management is just insanely difficult, trying to swim with the mouse is an excercise in drowning, the game is naauseatingly dull. and Tedious. And Monotonous. and repetitive. I installed this game and uninstalled it three times. So I really wanted to give it a chance, but this is just a waste of time which is fine if you have nothing better to do with your life, but if you only have a few hours you are willing to devote to computer games weekly, pick up something better written and thought out and entertaining like the Baldurs gate series, or wait for something like Dungeon Siege. Oh this was just plain pathetic. Its not that its the worst game in the world...its like one of those mediocre television movies that feels like you have seen all the actors play all those parts before and none of it is interesting or entertaining enough to rehash it, but you can't change the channel or turn it off...this game is torturously bad...in fact its so bad anybody who is willing to take my copy, i will pay you.

Wonderful Game

I think this game is great. It took me about 3 minutes to get used to the controls that other people still cry about being too hard. The game itself is fun and has alot of replay value with different endings and different character classes. It does crash once in a while but the game is fun enough that it dosen't matter too much. Just save often so you don't lose hours of game play.

Best RPG so far

This is my first time writing a review, so please bear with me. Gothic is a very good rpg. First thing that yiou notice, is that this game has incredibe graphics. The controls were a little confusing during first five minutes of playing, but easy to figure out. The story line is as solid as any other rpg out there, and the maker's claim about being able to explore the entire map is absolutely true, provided you can take on the monsters there. Overall, I'd say this is a very good game indeed.

The moment i began playing this game, i saw that it would be a new experience in the entire sense of the word. The world it takes place in seems to cover about 10 square kilometers(to scale), and every inch of it is refined to every detail. The game is exiting, suspenseful, intriguing, and, of course, fun. It is one of the greatest PC games available, and i highly recommend it.

AMAZING

This game deserves a 7 stars out of 5. It's unlike any RPG I have ever played. I played the game for over two years and never got bored. Beating the game with the different camps and jobs, its incredible. The weapons are vast and the quests and areas are huge. The graphics aren't top notch cause it's kind of an old game, but it's alot better than some of the more moddern titles out there. The freedom in doing what you want and the choices are a great plus. The only bad thing is the bugs and it crashes sometimes but I just quicksave lot so it doesn't matter to much. When you get bored of the game (after playing it for an eternity) it's fun to look up the cheats and fool around with them. With the cheats you can play as any npc or monster just by looking at them and pressing "x". The story is great and I love the gore when you stab somebody after knocking them out. Also the status element of gaining rank for privileges to weapon smiths and stores are really satisfying. This game is great and the combat system is unique and alot better than the click once and it automatically attacks. It involves you in the game and demands more than the brain cells of a lizard. I hope to get Gothic 3 soon despite the bad ratings. Some people just don't appreciate freedom and inginuity in a great game.

Best 3D Role pLaying Graphics and Game play

I do not often post a message here but below review that says about the game is so biased so I could not help but to write some on this fantastic game.
It reminds me of daggerfall (although slightly at the end plot becomes somewhat linear) and have great deep gameplay aspect.
I have played a lot of CRPG and in terms of game play it is one of the top three on my list
I am running the game at 1600*1200 32 bit color and it is almost equal to first person shooters with gorgeous day and night effect
This is a RPG game that will become a benchmark as Baldur's Gate did until recently
