If you like punching your computer screen in frustration then buy this title!

Before I bought this I did some reading up on the product and so I waited for it to go on sale. I bought for $20 and brought it home. Within a few hours I was already flipping out in frustration with the game. Not only was it slow and jittery but the commands are so unrefined and thought out that I was amazed that this is actually for sale. I think the people who did the testing on the product were the same batch of testers in the film Grandma's Boy. This half baked title from Piranha should win them the embarrassment merit badge. Here are some of my complaints:
1) The load times are terribly slow and I got a lot of house work done waiting in between saves.
2) German is in place of English in some cases
3) Conflicting information is given at times to complete quests.
4) Items such as carts, sacks, or rocks are in the way of ore and other materials.
5!) The character can really only walk or fight on a clean surface. If there is a rock, brick or minor curvature to the landscape (such as the side of a tunnel) he will slide and therefore can't fight, guard, and even go to a menu.
6) I have never sworn so much in my life over anything due to the frustrations of the game.
7) The ideas are so unoriginal. It is a mix between TES III Morrowind and Fable with none of the good parts of either.
8) you have to make a concerted effort to kill a orc or human by "targeting" the knocked out body and hold in the right then left mouse buttons which really does not work. You will just get killed trying to do this in a big fight.
9) You can't really choose to target anything it is whatever is kinda infront of you. After an enemy is knocked out you go to the next one and sometimes that is a friendly... not good; press load and go do the laundry.
10) the character will fall through the world and will engage characters in conversation although they are in another building or floor.
11) You can't withdraw your weapon while being hit and if you get caught in a flurry of hits just press F9 and go do some more laundry.
12) Sometimes the character while in battle will slide on a little rock and sheath the weapon and then look at the fool pounding him into oblivion... and I can go on

Don't buy this game! If you like something more for adults and want a game that pulls you in and much more refined buy Oblivion. If you want something that is more cute and fun then play Fable. If you want an excuse to kick your dog then buy Gothic 3 and look for my ad for this on Ebay in the "weird things" section.

A violation of one of the oldest rules in all of game creation

I've been playing video games since 1985 and the typical game is designed to run on current market systems not cutting edge market systems. I have a machine that was a year old - a P4 3.0Ghz with 1GB RAM and and a new 512MB Nvidia graphics card and this game would not run properly. I won't repeat what all the other reviews say but I will add that the game designers made a fatal error in designing a game that will probably only run on about 10 - 20% of consumer's computers. If you do not have a dual core processor with at least 2GB RAM on the motherboard forget about it! This game will probably end up ruining the Gothic franchise (which is sad since the first two games are good) and the design company - Pirhana Bytes. Purchase at your own risk.

Really great game!

I rarely write reviews, but I think the average reviews here on Gothic 3 are wrong. I've been playing computer games constantly for 25 years, and my favorite genre is RPG games.

I think Gothic 3 is the BEST game I've ever played! It has awesome graphics. I'm often asking my wife to come to see something in the game. I can't remember another game where I was doing that. The critter AI is very good. The quests are interesting. The sense of interacting with a complex world is better than any game I've ever played.

The complaints that animal monsters are too hard--that's not correct. I'm a middle aged guy with slow reflexes, and I'm not good at most real time or "twitchy" games, and I haven't had any problem with the combat. Now that I'm almost finished the game, and have become a powerful archmage, I never need to worry about melee combat.

The magic system in this game is interesting. Mages are much stronger than fighters and rangers, after they get the Mana Regeneration skill (that requires 250 Ancient Knowledge, which is easily available if you concentrate on it for awhile).

I haven't played Gothic 1 yet, and I didn't like Gothic 2 very much. I stopped about half the way through because I got frustrated over it being too hard. But Gothic 3 is wonderful!

Before Gothic 3, my favorite RPG was Morrowind (and my favorites before that were Wizardry 8, Might & Magic 6 and 7, and Ultima 3, 4, and 5).

I liked Morrowind so much (one of the few games I've played all the way through several times) that I was REALLY excited about the prospect of Oblivion. But I didn't like Oblivion very much. Somehow it seems bland and generic. I also thought it was too easy (this may be related to the fact that I figured out early that if you make a 100 percent Chameleon suit, you are invincible; I got to where I was slaughtering the worst monsters in the game with no armor and no weapon except fists, and after a point that was Too Boring For Words).

Gothic 3 is MUCH better!

You need a high-end machine to play Gothic 3. That's too bad. I think they weren't very accurate on the recommended specs. I have a fairly recent high-end rig with 2GB of RAM and an NVIDIA 7800. With the game's 1.09 patch installed, I find that it runs well most of the time. Saves and reloads are slow, but I can live with it because the game is so incredibly interesting. There are occasional hard crashes on load. The game is not as technically smooth as Oblivion. But it works well most of the time, and the gameplay is WELL worth the technical aggravations.

Incredible story with incredible gameplay

I played Gothic 2 a couple of years ago the whole way through. The gameplay was great, and made me want more right away. When Gothic 3 came out, I was more than excited. The game is not only great to play and addicting in a sense, but also easy to pick up on. One of my friends was able to start his own new game without ever playing and pick up on the controls and feel for the game almost right away.

The game is easy to warm up to, and with great features like graphics, voice acting, and a classic storyline, Gothic 3 should definitely be an addition to your library if you're an RPG fan. I have played many games like World of Warcraft, Neverwinter Nights 1/2, Guild Wars, Oblivion, the Final Fantasies and such, and Gothic stills can hold its own in many areas. The fact that it is so free roaming and that the environment and outcome of the game responds to everything you do is incredible. Simply killing one wrong person in the game can alter the storyline. The ability to free roam and quest without being pulled along through very restricted areas, like in Guild Wars, is one of the number one drawing factors for myself.

Gothic 3 has many great features that I might not even have discovered yet. I am about 1/2 of the way or so into the game now, and I'm learning new things about it everytime I start it up. Gothic 3 is simply unique and I guess you're just going to have to try it for yourself. Good luck, and have fun!

Good Game by too hungry on system resources

Great graphics and a good story line following on from Gothic 2. Lots of ways to develop you character and follow the story line through BUT wouldn't suggest it for anyone that doesn't have a top spec machine. My machine meets all the requirements and easily plays similar games (e.g. Elder Scrolls Oblivion) but struggles a lot with Gothic 3. So my experince is of a slow loading and very laggy game on 3.2GHz, 1Gb Ram, 256 Graphics... even when I've set some of the detail of the Graphics lower). It's prone to crash every so often as well. So I'll put the game into storage and play it again when my technology has caught up.

If it actually worked, it would be great

This could be a great game if it worked. I'm willing to put up with its balkiness, but what really frosts me is that it crashes regularly (say, once every hour or so of play). The mildest of the crashes necessitate my turning off the computer entirely and restarting it and the game. (This usually requires CTRL-ALT-Delete.) Then there are the crashes that won't allow me to restart but require me to literally unplug the computer to get out of the game. Finally, there are the crashes that necessitate my uninstalling and reinstalling the game itself. (Fortunately, the most recent save files still work.) Technical support is no help; Aspyr is the helpless victim of JoWood, which apparently has not seen fit yet to fix the American version. (I'm not sure what the status is of the German version.) The only help they offer (besides a refund or exchange) is a list of several hundred user suggestions about different things to try with the .ini file. Perhaps someday it will come out in a version that actually runs; when that occurs, I will recommend it highly. Until then, you had better keep your receipt if you buy it.
Apart from these problems, I enjoy playing the game. My low rating comes because in my view the game does not come up to the minimum technical requirement any game should have -- namely, to be relatively free of bugs before release. I think lawyers would say that the game does not provide the basic "warrant of merchantability".

I cannot get this to work. I have installed this on two newer machines which well exceed the minimum requirements. One has an ATI card and one has nVidia. The installers and drivers are all up to date. When I buy a game, I expect to put it in my DVD drive and play it. This game requires you to have moderately advanced computer knowledge even to start the game, which I have yet to experience. If you enjoy becoming frustrated, then this is the game for you.

Do not buy this game yet

This game was released way too early obviously - I have 2 computers and on my main computer it was unplayable - it was so choppy moving around and it froze alot of times - I even updated my video card and tried everything but that did nothing - when I put the game on high quality not only was it very choppy it turned all the animals into black boxes as well.

On my other computer I couldnt even play it I got a video card error and forced to restart and my computer told me it recovered from a serious error.

I would wait on this game until their are patches that fix this unplayable game - I seriously can't understand how video game companies release games full of bugs that need to be fixed - I feel very bad for the people who don't have an online connection and can't download the patches needed to play it. Next time don't release a game unless it's ready to play!

Very disappointed~

It's unfortunate that a game that was touted to be Oblivion's match is so poor.

I run a decent computer, & have 0 problems w/ Oblivion, which is quite a system hog. Before purchasing a game, I usually do give a peek @ some reviews, both here & on a game site or 2. However, I also try to keep in mind that there's a vast variety of things that may work for person A but not for B, attitudes, opinions, etc.

I was really on the fence about purchasing Gothic 3, & after only a few minutes of playing I understood why. The install went great (flawless, in fact). Starting the game took what seemed an hour (not really, but you know, if felt lengthy).

Something that bothered me (but I knew this beforehand) was that in this proposed massive world w/ unbelieveably deep RPG elements & so on - you don't create your own character. That's a huge deal for me, but I knew about it before I purchased, & figured I could get over it.

Yeah, I got over it, because immediately other issues were presented. The auto-optimization set my graphics quality to medium - (sound of error buzzer here). I set them to low, sat thru a long game restart, & began again.

Unfortunately, I couldn't play past the beginning portion. This was due to when tilting the camera (can't really give an angle here, it varied), all or part of the screen would go flashing white. Being that I have epilepsy, & need to be cautious, this immediately made the game unplayable. Hoping it was only the 1 time, perhaps an overlooked glitch, I played on & got the instructions to go to the next area...but the tilting/white flash issue did not go away.

While this is a concern to me because I suffer from seizures, even if I didn't, that problem is enough to make even a dedicated player take another look. Due to the developers being German, tech support forums (in English) are few & far between, or very disorganised.

So, as my title states, I am extremely disappointed. I hope those that purchase the game have better luck!!

Better than Elder Scrolls: Oblivion! Best RPG of 2006!

I am so shocked by all the other bad reviews this game has recieved on Amazon.

Once I started playing Gothic 3,.. I can't go back to Oblivion. It's just so much more fun!

Yes,.. it does crash because of bugs. (It's happened five times to me in the past two weeks.) It needs a patch, but I'm sure one will show up soon.

Othar than that,.. I have no complaints.

There are no load times except for when the game first loads! The open free-roaming game world streams off of your hard-drive and requires a top-of-the-line game PC to run effectively. It's great to not see any load screens in the game.
The graphics are as good if not slightly better than the graphics in Oblivion. The landscape and foliage and water all look realistic and natural. The character and creature animations are definitely better than Oblivion. The movements are much more fluid and life-like.

You may not be able to create your own character's appearance,... but you can completely customize the skills and abilities.

Gothic 3 doesn't hold your hand like Oblivion. You don't have a big arrow pointing out the solution to every problem. When someone gives you a quest it's up to you to find out how to get to where you need to go and what to do. There's actually an element of exploration since there isn't always a marker pointing exacly where you objective is. It's truly non-linear.
The story starts as the Orcs have overthrown the human kingdom and are now taking human slaves. Some human "rebel fighters" are trying to strike back and re-take the kingdom. It's totally up to you how the story goes. You could help the rebels,.. or become a mercenary for the now ruling Orcs,.. or whatever you want. You have actual conversation choices with NPC's as opposed to the simple keyword clicking of Oblivion.
You can make your own weapons, your own food, your own potions (with alchemy).

Yes, I've played Gothic 2,.. and Gothic 3 is better in every way.

The combat is waaaay better than the combat in Gothic 2 and is slightly better than the combat in Oblivion. Yes,.. if you just do nothing but click then the enemies will dodge,.. you need to learn to parry and move around the enemies defenses.

The voice acting may be kinda' cheesy,.. and it needs a patch to fix the crashes,.. but otherwise Gothic 3 is an Oblivion-killer if your PC exceeds the minimum requirements. (the bugginess and voice acting is why I give it four stars instead of five.)

Sadly,.. as you can see from the other reviews,.. Gothic 3 is destined to be an underrated, underdog game that won't get the success it deserves.
