Hot and cold running chills

3 Rating: 3, Useful: 5 / 6

Just like the Disney park attraction, this game runs hot and cold. The environments are fairly detailed, with nice little touches like spiders scurring up walls and moths hovering near candlelight, but the character animations are often crude and cartoonish. From the wallpaper to the artwork hanging on the walls, to the grandfather clock and the ghostly apparitions, there are plenty of nods to the Disneyland attraction that fans will appreciate. One key element that is missing is the music -Grin Grinning Ghosts (instead we get some less memorable sound-alike tracks).

The gameplay is pretty straightforward: you explore the mansion a room at a time, alternately shooting hostile ghosts and spiders, then coaxing hidden ghosts from planters, lamps, etc. Each room has a unique physical puzzle that must be solved in order to proceed, so the action never seems too repititious.

Madame Leota (the head in the crystal ball) serves as your guide and tutorial. For some reason she sounds like Mae West and will talk your ear off to the point that you may wish you'd left her behind.

Overall, a moderately entertaining package.

Thank you for a great game

Wonderful. You explore the rooms in a mansion. Each room has an action-oriented puzzle that you must solve before you can move to the next room. Seems like the difficulty of the puzzles was tweaked just right, where they were not too hard or too easy. I also appreciate that the boss enemy at the end was easy to defeat...because I absolutely hate bosses! They destroy the flow of the game for me. The graphics were pretty. Just wish I could have gone on and on, exploring many more rooms with interesting puzzles. I wish I could go into a store and find good games like Haunted Mansion all the time.

awesome game

This game is Amazing, of course it's no Socom 2 or Madden 2004, but it is a great (and challenging) game. The Graphics are amazing, and the depth the makers went into is very intreguing. It's very challenging to figure out all of the puzzles and little mind games that this game throws at you. I bought this game the Friday after it was released and as soon as I popped it into the PS2 I was hooked. It's Addictive, challenging (not to mention scary). All in all this is a GREAT game, it's been worth every penny. If you love thrills and love shooting games, THIS GAME WAS MADE FOR YOU!

Great, but not perfect...

This is a good game. I reccomend buying it. The female ghost that comes up to you and screams in your face really loud is very scary if the volume on the T.V. is up high. She scared the hell out of my brother! I don't play it very much anymore, since I don't know how to beat the museum. Turning the pictures from bad to good is the last and hardest task in the game. The rooms I had a blast in were the Maids Room, Ballroom, Attic, Mausoleium (misspelled, I know,) Kitchen, and the Toy Room. Really good cheats if you beat the game! Enjoy!

Spooky!

This is a great game for people who are good with puzzeles and examining tiny details. The average gamer- kid or adult- would probobly have the same difficulty with it as anybody else. Can be a bit spooky at times; not reccomended for kids 6 and under.
Rent first- you too could be trapped in the mansion!
Bwah Ha Ha! :)

Missed the mark on this one. The game is pretty straight forward and frankly a bit boring. Your goal is to catch ghosts and that's about it. The character is limited to jumping, shooting, and sucking up ghosts. The character movement is rather rigid. The graphic are ok. There are some nice touches like the ghosts that appear but other than that the graphics are average at best. The camera might drive you nuts (did me) as it spins everything around you instead of smoothing looking ahead of you. All in all it's really a rather boring game and so is the character. If you want to play a great family game get Wallace & Gromit Project Zoo.

Fun, but maybe not for video game beginners

This game is really fun and very challenging, but even choosing the easiest difficulty level can lead to a lot of frustration if you can't figure out the technique that is required to finish a level (the book-walking in the conservatory is just one example that had our 12-year-old frustrated to tears; I am fairly computer-savvy and this challenge--even at the easiest difficulty setting--took me about an hour). If you are not a video game pro, plan on investing a lot of time and patience ~ but you will be rewarded by your accomplishments! (and maybe think about looking up some cheats online when you are ready to quit altogether!)
