The best RPG I have ever played!

STUPID GAME

I found this game frustriating in the extreme. In play it was hard to go anywhere in the game, but I'll never truly know because it continually crashed my computer until I was so fed up I uninstalled it. The little play I did accomplish wasn't enough to get me hooked, so I haven't bothered to reinstall... such is life.

Not bad for a start

Well, to make this worth while. Lets assume that you are an AD&D nut. If you have ever played the C-64 ver. of AD&D, you know what the movements were like. That's right, slow. Though for hours I would play the game. You say, what's that got to do with Baldurs Gate? The movements of the character have not been thought out right. While the game itself has a fantastic look. It lacks in the character movements to go smoothly around. Still lost eh? Take a look at Squares' game "Final Fantasy". The characters movements are smooth and easy to control. That kind of action is much needed to really get the true benifits of the game. So while Baldur is the step in the right direction for computer gaming. They really need to work out those movements. Other than that, I am always being yeld at by my wife to stop playing and pay attention to her. By the way, this game is very addictive.
So enjoy to your hearts content. But choose your path carfully or wait for ever for your character to realize, "oh I can move here."

this game is just like D&D games you have to get this game if you like roleplaying games this is the game to get. I recomend all the other buldersgate games. but if ur dmb enough to look at all the ones people write. then stop looking and get this game. Diablo 2 is nothing to all buldurgate or anyother of its games. I recommend it to D&D players through out the world

Sorry, it's a little late!

While Baldur's Gate is an exceptional game, it is to little to late. This game cannot compete with Diablo II. If you are going to spend you're hard earned money on a game, buy Diablo II. It has beter graphics, plot, and is by far the better game. Graphic Simulations took so much time that when they finally released the game, they had to deal with Blizzard's epic game. All I can say is, "Sorry, Graphic Simulations... you should have kept your deadlines... it would have made you more sales in the end."

Better games on the way

I waited and waited and WAITED for this game, and yes, I did get some enjoyment out of it. The graphics are beautiful, and the quests/encounters are generally top-notch.

But there are quite a few drawbacks... 1. The characters move slowly and constantly bump into each other/go the wrong way. Compared to Diablo II, this is incredibly frustrating! Yes, you can jiggle with the AI, and I encourage it, and yes, you can pick up boots of speed, but it's a big problem with all the terrain you have to explore.

2. For my taste, there's too much hokey humor. A stuttering, chicken-out fighter? And one who loves his "space hamster?" Come on. A little bit goes a long way.

3. It's based on 2nd Ed rules. If you're unhappy with the new system, by all means, go for it. I much prefer the sleek and adaptable new system.

Also, why settle for BG or BG2 when Neverwinter Nights is on the way, based on 3rd Ed? And Diablo II (already available) and its expansion, which use their own nicely-tuned system?

Lastly, developers, let's get those Mac/Linux ports out faster next time, eh?

You can't miss it

BG is one of the most exciting games that I've ever tried (and I've tried hundreds). Wonderful graphic, astonishing sound-design, catching story, many side-quests and total freedom of movement.
Unfortunately, it has some technical problems and it crashes often. Thanks to Graph Sim which did this bad conversion for our beloved Mac.

Short but sweet

BG is a very good game that I would've rated as excellent (5 stars) except for the fact that it was so freakin' slow. The characters plod across the scene and often, actually always, bump into each other, and objects, which takes them an agonizingly long time to then walk around the person or thing. Saving and loading scenes can take far too long considering the fact I'm using a G3 400 mhz powerbook. And what is with the auto-save, how do I disable that function, all it does is slow down game time and save when I don't need to. As to the gameplay, the pause function is necessary in this game, there aren't enough monsters to kill to gain experience, and some of the NPC's act "goofy".

But the bottom line...buy the game because it reminds me of the old Ultima games except with better graphics and animation. A great game that could've been excellent. Now onto BGII.

Absolutely incredible....

I would give this game 5 stars, but it does crash every now and then...save often! Basically, this game is so addictive, I have trouble thinking about anything else. Grrrrr! Hah, maybe I should dock it another star for that. This game is a bit slow paced sometimes, but that is not really a draw back in my opinion. I like taking the time to walk around and explore things and not feel rushed. I like FPS's as much as the next gamer, but a good RPG should me a more immersive experience. This is one of the best you can get for your Mac.

Too unstable to be truly enjoyable

In between marveling at the glories of the AD&D I remember playing in my youth tranformed into a very complex and deep computer game, I get to sit through endless reboots of my system. I play this on a 256M RAM, 600 MHz iMac running MacOS 9.2.1 and goosed the game RAM assignment by 10,000K --still it is horribly, disappointingly unstable.

If you take the plunge, save frequently!
