It's the worst game in the world

Horrible, but I had everyone over my house and we all played it, and now I buy it as a gag gift.

A pretty good game.

I think that if you are a fan of the fighting genre then you should try Barbarian. While Soul Caliber or Mortal Kombat are hard with lots of keys to remember this is not so with Barbarian the game is really easy and some might find this a weakness. Now if you suck really bad then this game is highly recommended. It is probably the only way your sister can beat you. Heck someone who has never touched a controller can beat you. I really like the level designs and I think that the magic attacks are cool. The best however is that 8 people can be on the screen at once, 8! Even if you don't suck still at least rent Barbarian.

Fun for four

This is a game for a certain type of person. If you want to see blood spurting everywhere, don't buy this game. If you want an RPG to play alone, don't buy this game. However, if you want a fun game that you can play with 3 other people at the same time that won't make your mother turn pale, this is it. Fairly clean fighting with a minimum of gore (considering that the characters are slashing at each other with axes and swords), with the opportunity to have as many as 8 characters battling at once, it can be a lot of fun. The combos aren't hard to master, and the graphics are very sharp. You can even pick up nearby objects and hurl them at your opponents, which is a fun trick all in itself.

For a one person or two person fighting game, there are better, but for 4 people, this is an excellent choice, especially for under 15 dollars. You will get your money's worth.

An RPG? No way.

Barbarian is marketed as an RPG, but it's basically a really, really bad fighting game. The only RPG like element is that your character, in theory, advances as they go through fights.

If you like Barbarian, then you probably haven't played a realy fighting game, like DOA2 Hardcore.

This Game Is Great!

"Barbarian" is a great, and fun, video game for the Sony PlayStation2. The fighting moves the characters have are really cool and the graphics rock! I highly recommend this video game to anyone.

Don't even Rent it.

Honestly, I feel that one star is too high a rating for this boring title. I bought this game, took it home, beat it and returned it to it's case less than an hour later. That is no exaggeration. You play the story mode as one of the characters who ultimately kill the main boss for various reasons. The story is never developed and you never really understand what is going on. Worst of all, the fighting is terrible. All you have to do is learn your character's most devastating combo and you completely thrash all of your opponents. Also, in between scenes you must wait for loading and the screen has this annoying little skull on it that's moving it's mouth. Maybe I'm just crazy, but it seemed like it was laughing at me becuase I bought this game. Sometimes my eye catches the copy of Barbarian sitting on my shelf, collecting dust and I can hear the skull laughing at me. Seriously people, walk right by this one.

Fun to rent, not to buy

This is a fun game for the first day or so. It had a lame story line. The graphics were okay, but I think they could have done a lot better job. The fighting system is what brought it's rating down. It was kind of boring, and it was the same thing every time you fought, and don't be mistaken for it's miss advertising. IT IS NOT AN RPG. It is far from one, too. I guess if you like games like tekken, then this would be a good game for you, but like I say, "fun to rent, not to buy."

Better buys out there

Well first off, I'm not a fan of fighting games, so the one star may be a bit biased, but from the fighting gamews i have played, I still feel this would merit only one or two stars. I feel a bit mislead, if you, like i did have the impression that this game has a decent amount of role playing elements then you're wrong. The only aspect of roleplaying thats really here is after each fight you get about 3-5 points to add to a series of about 10 different attributes. Their effects are noticible on thr gameplay, but barely so. The storyline is very slim consisting of about a 25-40 text "story" of what is about to happen witha voice-over as well. IE: "Keelya's father had many allies, on her quest for vengeance she sought out Tyros known for his simple sense of judgement, as is the custom in Barbaria a test of mettle was in order. They fought..." after this is goes to the fighting stage. The levels are pretty big for a fighting game, but dont expect the ability to go off exploring becuase you're prevented from running a screen distance away from the other fighter and the camer doesn't zoom out at all so you end up just just running in place on the edge of the screen until your opponent moves closer. The combo attacks and "rune" attacks aren't anything special and most of the fights end up being repetitive, with the two fighters taking turns in hitting eachother. If you're looking for a role playing game or a combo game with good roleplaying elements in it, don't buy this game. If you're looking for a fighting game, this one is sub-par I had a lot more fun with DOA2 and the Tekken games

Barbarian - A Super Fighter/RPG Combo

I have to admit ... I like this game. It definitely has two sides, mixing a Fighter like VF4/Tekken 4 and an RPG like FFX. Now, if you compare either side to the competition, there's no comparison. Obviously, VF4 is the best and FFX is in class all by itself. However, if you look at the combination of the two sides, I think you'll find that this game does a fine job of melding the two. Yes, similar fighting styles are shared among the fighters. Yes, there are some repetitive moves. But the situations you find yourself in are always unique ... no two fights are ever the same. This game is all about strategy FIRST, and fighting like a button masher a far distant SECOND. The best things about Barbarian are:

1) The RPG element of building your character's attributes
2) Compelling character stories
3) Nice graphics
4) Nice music and sound effects
5) Interesting character types
6) Cool strategic element - Button mashers beware! You need to fight with intelligence, and use the environment to your advantage. If you don't think that way, this game is no fun at all. I kind of like the idea that blocking doesn't prevent damage. Why should it. You need to evade and attack with ferocity rather than block, block, block.

If you're looking for the next VF4, this is not it. If you're looking for the next FFX, this is not it. If you're looking for a cool in-between game, this is it!

don't waste your money

i regret even renting this game. it is NOT an rpg. it is NOT entertaining. this is a third rate fighting game with lame moves and an even lamer "character upgrade" system. the fighting system is boring as are the fights you get into. even the graphics are substandard. this game should have been released for the super nes
