Short and Sweet

I enjoyed this game and spent time beating it.The problem is that it is too one directional. The play is better than say baldur's gate, mostly because of the new d and d rules. But, baldur's gate was more free, you could roam the country and chose your path. In icewind dale you did what it told you, that was it, I suggest Baldur's gate 2 if you want a great game

Graphics leave something to be desired but the story and game play make this game a must play for any RPG fan.

The Best One Yet!

I have played Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn with Throne of Bhaal, and the original Icewind Dale with Heart of Winter and Trials of the Luremaster. I would have to say that Icewind Dale II tops them both. It is not really fair to compare the Icewind Dale Series to the Baldur's Gate series because they both were designed to give the player a different experience and roleplaying feel. Both do an extraordinary job on what they set out to do though. One action and the other plot. I am very satisfied with the last of the Infinity Engine games. My two wants were fully fufilled: more monsters, spells, and the 3rd Edition Dungeons & Dragons rules. If you play DnD computer games at all, you owe it to yourself to buy Icewind Dale II.

Great game - D&D, graphics, real time, etc...

I haven't played D&D in a LONG time and I have only the Wizardry series to compare this software too. That being said, this game is exactly what I would expect of it. It is the (seemingly) full new D&D rule set, great graphics, great sound, great spell effects, tons of weapons / armor, etc... NPC interaction and dialogue is good as well (but could be better).

So far the game has been easy, save for the fighting sequences. In my game playing experience (Wizardry) I have not had as difficult time fighting at such an early level. The first major battle series was quite difficult - though I eventually got through it (after several save / re-loads attempts).

If the game keeps up this level of challenge throughout, it will be a great time. That being said, the actual "missions" thus far have been easy - I suspect they will become harder as the game progress's.

All in all, a great game. Of course there are issues with it, as found in some of the reviews - but head them only if you are a major game geek. If not, this (as well as most games) will probably do you fine.

It is very complicated gameplay, and MOTS with regard to

the icewind dale series.

They still haven't fixed the inability of characters to walk to a point as a group. This caused me to lose at a certain part of the game (after a looooong battle) where you have to get to a certain place in a certain time, and I had to refight it.

I also got bitten yet again trying to load, seeing I hadn't saved when I thought I had, trying to go back into the game and seeing it would not let me.

Both of these are irritating and stupid design flaws which should not be hard to take care of assuming the structure of the program is at all credible.

The 3rd generation stuff and feats are really cool and seem just like fallout in many ways. It is really neat, but easy to create useless or nearly useless characters so you have to read quite a bit since it is such a departure from the previous stuff.

Also, the monk class has gone from being unfairly unbalanced and strong to worthless, which is odd.

Fighters have gone from good to really good/almost godlike compared to others in fighting ability.

The story and fights are not as badly done as in icewind dale 1, and I am enjoying it much more, though I have restarted twice now due to screwing up the characters I chose.

Nowhere near the others

As far role-playing concerned, this game is awful.

The replay value is nil, because the plot is too centralized to the game, and you can only go to one place at a time. That would be vaguely annoying if not for the forced play: The areas are not an expansive wilderness packed with quests to complete and people to help. The wilderness is packed with monsters, usually exclaiming the same thing every time they die, until you get to the big lead bad guy who just says "How did I fail?" Then collapses. Then you go back to town and get congratulated for saving everybody once again, or return to fix some problem, and start over, doing the same, monotonous thing over and over again.

The dungeon crawls are bearable, but overall, I wouldn't suggest buying this game. It's a better waste of time to just replay Baldur's Gate 2, Torment, or one of those.
(Also, I couldn't find a single 2nd level spell scroll for my wizard after playing through the game twice. What's up with that?)

An Awful Waste of Time

Truly, this is an awful game. I have always played RPGs and this one takes the cake as the worst oneo of all time, even worse than the tedious Diablo. The entire game is a knockoff of the original. If you thought you ever heard an awful backstory, just listen to this one: A horde of goblins are attacking(duh!) and you are the only one who can save the world. That is the whole gist of it. The remaindr of the game revolves around you walking around, talking, and killing. The thing that desturbed me the most was seeing this game compared to the classic BGII. The games are nothing alike. In the BG series, the game was just fun to play. The charachters in your group were actual people, not just mindless henchmen. They had personalities, minds and opinions. They were also higher level and much more colorful. But all of that is gone in this game. Here you are forced to create a six person party using the 3rd ADD rules. No more dies, but the point system is even more difficult to keep track of. The charachters all start as absolute weaklings, spineless level 1 charachters. Unless you play at the Heart of Fury mode, you can find absolutely no good items. About halway through the game, I only had one good sword. Referring to the charachters they are awful. A goblin can take out your mage in one hit, after three hits the most fearsome of fighters fall. And the fighting is so rediculus. Charge up, tryh not to use spells, and hope that you don't die. No strategy needed. And get ready to hit the reload button often. Every minute or so a charchter dies and you have no way to ressurect them. There is absolutely no way to circumvent the annoying battles. You can't even flank them, ust follow the road( sound like Diablo to anyone?) It too all the best parts of Bioware classics and ruined them. My advice is to never buy this pile of [junk]. Me, I think the worst mistake of the year was buying this awful game. Unless you want to go insanse, don't buy this and you'll thank me later.

Incredible finish to the series!

Incredible game! RPG's are my life so I know what im talking about... Although i despise games that are finite (games that end) this game is incredible. Although the best RPG ever is the baulders gate series. Namely shadows of Amn.

The Biggest waste of money EVEN!

At first the game was really fun! But once your air ship cashs it gets WAY TO HARD! Also theres way to much fighting you almost never get to talk your way out of a fight. There it not enough side quests too theres only about 30 or something and most of them you have to kill something! You can't go back to an old region once you leave it to. I mean if your air shipped crashed on a mountain what would you do fight your way to you goal wich is about a few 100 or 1000 miles away or going back to Targos wich is only about 600 miles away which you know for sure as medical care. Also your world map shows places in the world that you can't GO TO! I saw on my world map when I first started a place called Good Mead but the game never lets you go there. Also the all the quests in the game have to do with the main quest but something like 4 or 5. One more thing its very easy to find quests but almost impossible to do soem with out a walk thourgh. Also once you beat the game once it gets WAY TO BORING! And last but not least the "Hearts Fury Mode" is way to hard I mean when I started a group of 3 goblins (the weakest character in the game...I think or almso the worst) killed 4 of my parties members and I had jsut gotten off the boat into town. I think this game is only fun for about 20 hours then is drags on and on because jsut when you think you win a battle more people come to kill you.

Should have been a turn based game

I love every aspect of this game outside of the combat. You get so many cool options with your characters, but it's difficult to use them in a timely manner because combat is moving so fast. If Icewind Dale 3 is in the works & especially if you're going to use 3rd Ed D&D Rules, please make it turn based combat
