Looks to surpass Rome Total War

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 9 / 15

On playing the demo and marvelling at the screenshots and stirring musical score I suspect this could be a threat to the Total War franchise which seems to have gone stale with Rome.

The battle landscapes are beautifully rendered rolling hills where trees, farmland and buildings can be exploited and occupied. The artillery looks a vast improvement as does the speed of the battles which are intense, dramatic and chaotic just as battles of the period were.

The naval battles are the piece de resistance adding an immensely rewarding twist to the formula. Pyro studios have done a superb job from scratch and deserve every acolade I'm sure they will get. Buy.

Misunderstood Gem

The negativism of many of the reviews to date may create a misimpression for many of the readers. IG is really a strategy game in the Civ III mold. The player controls a country and runs that country's economic, industrial, intellectual and military affairs with the ultimate goal of leading the Age or conquering the world. Unlike Civ III, it is set specifically in the Napoleonic era and thus the strategic situations and decisions are tailored to the era.

In this the game succeeds admirably. I could quibble with details, as others have done, but in general the challenges are identifiably Napoleonic. The Major Countries each face individual situations and threats recognizably historical. The trade/resource model is particularly effective at simulating the pressures and opportunities that brought a continent to war. Production and diplomacy are rough hewn, adequate and perfectly fine. The research tree is interesting and historical. But since all nations complete all items of research sooner or later, research choices only create temporary differences in capabilities. This perhaps could have been done more artfully, but it is amusing even if it doesn't advance the historiosity as well as it might have.

So with regard to the strategic game which is the heart of IG: Bravo!!! It is challenging, fun, recognizably historical and not so complex so as to compete with one's day job for tedium.

As a second order effect, IG also offers the option of tactical land an naval combat. Please note these are in fact options (reinforcing the notion that the strategic game is the center of the developer's intent). Any battle can be 'fought by computer' to speed up play or isolate play to the strategic realm. The tactical battles themselves are more like candy than serious simulations of Napoleonic battles. They are pretty enough and they are certainly Napoleonic in flavor. But make no mistake, the battlefield dynamics are unique to this game and people knowledgeable in Napoleonic tactics will have to make adjustments to their approach. I would agree with the observations of other reviewers and suggest that minor adjustments might be made in unit statistics to enhance gameplay and historiosity. But both naval and land battles are amusing little puzzles in and of themselves now, even if not rigorously historical.

My one complaint is one that hasn't been mentioned yet. Neither the included printed or PDF manual is sufficient to the game's complexity. The strategy guide arrived today and it seems to contain a lot of data missing from elsewhere. Hopefully it'll fill in some of the gaps in rules explanations as well.

To conclude, Imperial Glory is a fine game of Napoleonic strategy. In the style of Civ III, it captures the decisions and feel of the Napoleonic era with simplicity, challenge and excitement. It passes the rare 'just one more turn' test of addictive gaming. But it is not for everybody. Gamers desiring realistic Napoleonic combat would be better served looking elsewhere ("Waterloo: Napoleon's Last Battle" or "Austerlitz: Napoleon's Greatest Victory" would be the benchmark there). And to be sure, there are a few design decisions (restricted naval maps and army morale in particular) and unit balancings (artillery range and militia combat power to name two) which should be readdressed. But for Napoleonics fans who have days of their lives to lay at the alter of a really fun, recognizably historical game that is simple to learn yet with great replayability, this is a must buy!

Wonderful Tactical Strategy.

Move over Rome Total War! Imperial Glory is a very good title. It really shines during the turn-based strategy game mode with a GORGEOUS map to play on, animated pieces, and deep strategy. It even has economic and diplomatic models that are very lifelike.

The tactical side of the game is good but flawed somewhat. Even so, I found it MUCH more enjoyable than Rome Total War. The battles are fast moving, exciting, and a real treat to watch.

The graphics and sound are superb.

Great game.

I think people came in thinking of this game in the wrong way. They wanted it to be like Rome Total War, but its more like a Medieval Toal War. The straedgy masters RTW but the comabat is on smaller scale in Imperial Glory. If you enjoy stradegy games and enjoy the studying the Napleonic Time Period you will love this game. If you like pure action and massive blood baths; you wont like this game. Its a fantastic stradegy game and i like the battles. I think the musket vollys are dont very well and look realistic. I love this game and ive been playing it for a week pretty much non stop, its very addictive. So again if your a fan of a lot of action you probabaly wont like this game. If you like stragedy games that take a lot of thinking and a lot of time to beat, you'll like this game!

What a surprise

Cooming from Shogun, Medieval and Rome I never expected a better game. Though the battles in Rome are somehow better, this litte game kicks serious butts.

What a beatifully crafted Game.........

I think this game is by far the BESt strategy game Ever produced, surpasing Rome which shocked me when it came out.

if you like strategy and War then this is a MUUUSSST!

I tried France and failed, the Prussia and Failed then I took on England because it was isolated and conquered the world.
England is by far the easiest, once you control the seas you are there 50% the rest if building armies and landing anywhere you want, blockading countries and getting rich from their payments.... Beautifull

These guys ARE GOOD!!.

Hope they dont stop here

bad things about the game
- The Options Menu Suck
- Cant map keyboard to commands, either you use what it has or you are dead.
- Naval battles suck though they are better than Rome which has none.
- Customer support SUCKS bad.

Great Game!!!

This game is a lot of fun! I played hours of it when I first got it! Some of the other reviewers said that it takes hours building up your resources to get a battle. It doesn't! I got a good battle in half-hours time. When your in the campaign and you put the duffulculty level to easy, resources won't be different from duffulcult but the AI agression won't be as bad. Also, some reviewers said that you never know if your artillery is out of range but it does show you! If you pointer is blue and shows a cannonball, then your artillery is in range! If your pointer is red and there's an X over the cannonball then your out of range. Also, if you tell your artillery to fire where your infantry or cavalry is, you might end up firing at your own men! One time as I was looking at one side of the battle, my artillery was firing at one of my infantry battalions and the enemy wasn't even near that area! But I think it makes it more realistic even though I lost about half of that battalion that one time! Another thing is that when making deals with the other countries at the bottom of the screen, it tells you if your offer might be accepted or not. This review was to show you some of the things that the other reviewers made mistakes about.

I think this is an AWSOME game

I've read the reviews below and I disagree. I think Imperial Glory is a great balance of Strategy, Tactical and Naval Combat of the 18th and 19th Century and the graphics are great. It did not work well on one of my older machines. I am running a P4 3.2ghz with a Radeon card and it runs great. Did not look or run well on a P4 1.8mghz and an older nVidea.

I have been playing it for hours. It is not an easy game to learn and you do have to read the manual and do the tutorials but I love it!!!

If you like strategy games, this one is for you.

The graphics are terrific, the concept is intelligent. Think Rome Total War at the time of Napolean. If you are a war enthusiast, this game is for you.

This is a great strategy game. If you ever wondered what empire-building during the Napoleonic era was like, this is the game for you. The game is thoroughly researched down to the level of the uniforms and weaponry, and the military units manouver in the precise manner described in military history books. For naval warfare buffs, it brings new realism to naval strategy games, allowing for the wind factor and the accuracy of the guns.
Be warned, however, this is a game for hard-core strategists, not for the shoot-em up crowd. If you consider yourself a cognoscenti of military strategy games with more than a passing taste for history, give this one a try, you won't regret it
