....that is, IF you are able to understand that different games are DIFFERENT GAMES. Ive been a long time fan of the driver series and the gta series & love both, but all of these reviews comparing it to gta are misleading. I went against the reviews & bought it & was glad i did ! If you like the previous driver games, you will not be dissapointed with the 3rd ! The missions arent as simple as some may say, & theyre interesting as well as the story line. The handling of the cars is just like the previous driver games, great weapons, so Ive been very happy with this one. I was almost instantly addicted. My one & only very very minor complaint is that your character could run a little faster than he does, but it doesnt cause any game play issues, id just like to run faster. So yes, Driver fans buy this game & overlook any review that complains that its not grand theft auto!.....because it is not grand theft auto, its DRIV3R & its well worth the money.

AN AWESOME GAME!!!!!!!

The gaming rags that are giving this masterpiece bad reviews should be ashamed of themselves. It's enough to make a body believe that there's some kind of conspiracy against this game. The graphics, background music and control are all as good as it gets, so good I didn't even miss the crazy radio soundtrack of the Roadkill or GTA type. The on-foot action is better than that of any other game in the genre; it's like Max Payne with a FPS option. With the huge, beautiful cities, crazy car crashes and replay mode, this game has seemingly infinite replay value, even if the missions weren't any good -- and despite what you may have heard, they're every bit as good as the ones in GTA, and far more realistic-seeming. In short, this game makes the GTA series, True Crime, or that awful The Getaway all look like Pac-Man by comparison. After being spoiled by this, I can't imagine going back to playing that old clunky-controlled, cartoonish, ugly, and outdated game engine in Vice City (which will be returning in the new GTA: Ghetto Edition, which with the release of Driver 3 is officially old news before it is even released). Driver is, of course, the gaming series that invented the genre, and Driver 3 sets the new standard. Write down the names of all those game mag reviewers that are saying it is a failure or a disappointment, because they're making fools of themselves, and as far as I'm concerned have lost all credibility. This isn't just a must-see, it's a must-buy, and maybe the best game in the history of the PS2.

The good things about Driv3r:

The V8 cars sound great
The Cities look great, and are pretty big
The handling is all about power sliding, like the previous series
The graphics are more 'realistic' than it's closest rival, GTA

The bad things about Driv3r:

The cars that aren't big V8s sound like mopeds going downhill

The Cities may be big, but you can't make use of them in the missions, take a short cut during most missions and you will fail. There is so much in each city (football stadiums, parks, skate parks you name it) but none of it is of any use within the game. In 'Take a ride' mode there isn't anything to do apart from shoot the 10 'Timmys', the GTA series rewards players for fooling around, Driv3r just lets you do it for nothing.

The missions have opted for difficulty rather than complexity or quality. The missions are very short, but frequently unfair. Although the game can easily be completed in a day, it will be through gritted teeth as you replay over and over until you finally get a mission to start without some idiot in a van pulling in front of you at the start.

The boats are really lame - they look good, and the view of a sunset as you skim the Miami or Nice coast is good, but the boats don't bob about on the water, even at speed. They ride the water like it was flat glass.

In pursuit missions, even if you manage to overtake the car you are to take out, trying to ram it is pointless as it turns out to be as solid as a wall, and you wont affect it's progress.

The police, even if they were driving battery powered golf carts (they dont, but you know what I mean) can overtake you. Makes me wonder why I shelled out for that Ferrari, a cop car is obviously the ultimate supercar.

All vehicles have a top speed of around '80mph' (revealed by a missions speedometer)and on a straight road you'll be screaming for it to go up at least one more gear.

The control issues - getting in and out of boats & cars, aiming, and jumping are all seriously flawed.

Millions of bugs. Pedestrians fall from the sky (often, believe it or not) you can become trapped in roadside buildings, the kerb often triggers a 'head on' collision, some pillars and posts can be driven through and some are totally indestructible...

Pretty as it is, once you've completed the (short but crushingly unfair at times) missions there is little else to do, little else of any value at least.

Just a bit more care on making the missions fairer, longer, interesting and making more use of the cities - and this would have been a good game in spite of it's other flaws.

Oh, other reviewer (!), it was Ryan O'Neal in The Driver and it's not rare, you can pick up the VHS right here on Amazon :)

Not as bad as they say,its actually a GOOD game.

I am a fan of Driver and GTA,But i decided to skip DRIV3R due to its bad reviews and alot of reviewers here on amazon.com are damning the game hard.
The reason i bought DRIV3R is to fill in a GameStation offer-the "4 For 20 Quid" offer which i bought Hitman 2,Hitman:Contracts and The Getaway:Black Monday-which i was buying to spend my Birthday money on along with BLACK.
DRIV3R was definately not in any ways perfect as it had TERRIBLE aiming, but everything else was OK-The cars, motorbikes, boats not to mention the storyline-plus you get to roam freely around Miami,Istanbul and NICE in "Take A Ride" or do the storyline missions in "Undercover",The game is set out nicely-but i agree that the GTA games are set out better in those respects-as you are just in a world where you do whatever you want and when you want to do a mission just drive to the marker and so on.
I will just some the game down:

Graphics:8/10:Good graphics i suppose.

Sound:8.5/10:The FX is great, when you crash it sounds very realistic etc,and the music is OK too.

Gameplay:8/10:The gameplay is fun-like freeroaming is OK,the missions feel very action-ish and very exiting. It also set a bar for future freeroaming games-You can now "Swim" in this game, which you can`t do in any freeroam games apart from GTA:San Andreas and DRIV3R.

Overall:8.6/10-or 79%/100%=GOOD game but not in anyways SUBPERB but was still worth the money(even if it was just a filler for some offer i was getting).

Reccomended to:People who Like Freeroam/Sandbox games should give DRIV3R a shot,it may not be as bad as you think!

Goodbye.

Still not better than Vice City!

Driv3r is pretty good.Alot better than Driver 2. The graphics are better than the GTA games. The cars look and sound good.I think that there should be many more weapons. There is no blood in the game and what SUX is that you cant drive through bushes. You will mess up your car real bad.The boats SUCK.Some look ok but the controls suck.It doesnt have realistic turns like the ones in Vice City and there are no waves i think. Oh yeah and theres no one else out ther to jack there boats. It is also kinda difficult to shoot' hard to aim while running. There are no places to buy or go into besides your house. There should be less chasing missions because they are hard' especially when you cant even ram the persons car over without it being like you hit a brick wall.I think that people should rent the game or wait till it comes out cheaper.

Yuck! Save your cash.

Okay, I'm not going to waste alot of time beating a dead horse, all of the negative comments about this game are ALL true. Remember the car grabbing light poles from Driver1? They are here, along with shoddy physics, poor aiming control, and a lack of speed that will disgust you. You can grab the fastest car in the game, aim it down the longest straight away you can find and you'll still not have any feeling of REALLY moving. I loved Driver, and even Driver 2, but this game should have been properly de-bugged before release. Long and short-save your cash, rent first, and you'll see what I and so many others have said all along- this game sucks.

What a joke

You've got to be kidding me? This is what you've come up with over the last couple of years? Game play is awful and clunky. Nothing smooth about this at all. The driving is horrible. Car's don't react that way and it feels as if the car nevers gets out of first gear. Shooting and aiming is dumb as hell. You get shot a few times before you can even aim at the guy you need to. Moving around is even worse. You have to use a combo of both analogs or 1 analog and the thumbpad in order to really see where you're going.

Atari: Don't even go back to the drawing board. Burn the drawing board. Don't try to take an awful game and throw money at voice overs for characters on actors that people perceive to be cool. If you spent half of your talent (whatever there is of it) on the game rather then the animated sequences, you might have something worth 2 stars here. Until then I will never buy another Atari game again.

Bottom line: This game sucks

It's called DRIVER for a reason

All of these people who write a review for this game that even mention Grand Theft Auto should just be dis-regarded. Driver 2 was the first game to allow you to get out of your car & steal another one... our mute friend from Liberty City was the second.

Now, on with the review.

Driver 3 is basically an action movie fan's dream. You don't just play Tanner, you *are* Tanner. To be able to walk out of the back of your house, hop into you speedboat, and go to another island without a loading screen keeps the illusion. Not being able to target enemies & aiming on your own builds your skill as a marksman in the game instead of just shooting wildly at your enemy.

Yes, there is a lot of driving in the game, but the game isn't called Driver: The Shooting Experience. I consider this a great driving game, much like the Grand Turismo series, with missions thrown in & the benefit of being able to get out of your car.

All in all, to anyone just looking for another 'Theft' clone, wait for San Andreas. Anyone looking for a enjoyable, challenging, and visually appealing game... this game's for you.

5 stars.
