fun with lots of grinding...

its a great game but the grinding makes it hard to stay with. customizing mechs is great and the battles are cool...graphics still need some work but alot better than FM3

Worst Square / Enix game I've ever played

Square Enix is the gold standard in quality games, but this one is a huge let down. The graphics are crap. The story is pointless, and worse, SLOW. But the real sin here is that the gameplay is so tedious and un-fun. Wish I could say it was better.... but its not. Might be worth $10 bargain bin purchase, but even that is questionable.

this is a great part in the series

Excellent Tactical Game...

Most of the other reviews have stolen my thunder. This is a solid game, fairly short learning curve, excellent tactical depth and generally fun to play. While totally turned based (like Final Fantasy Tactics) the game moves along well.

Overall, if you like strategy and tactics you should pick this up. Plus you can never beat giant robots.

DID YOU KNOW?
If you complete the game and continue from your completed saved game, you start over with all your money and experience points. Give it a try...

Awesome Game for Strategielovers!

This game is awesome for everyone who loves Strategygames or Turnbased strategy. At the same time it has a really neat story and it gives you the possibility to completely customise your gear and inventory of your characters. The Mecha setting might not hit everyones taste, but its still an awesome game.

I love it!

If you don't love these types of games you're going to hate FM4. Unlike several other people who played FM3 on the PS1, my opinion is unaffected by playing that particular installment so I can be fair and completely neutral in my assessment.

First off, I am a huge fan of turn-based strategy games especially those of the RPG genre. That is one reason why FM4 appeals so much to me. My pedantic, often times tedious and probably more closely obsessive/compulsive determination to try and perfect my groups wanzers was the thing that I enjoyed the most. You had a huge choice of weapons and load outs available and it was obvious that the makers actually did take the time to design this game. One feature that I liked was the Online Shop that allowed you go back and purchase items that were no longer in the standard Wanzer Shop. That was helpful although I wish they would have allowed all weapons to continue to be available and not just a subset of them.

I loved the ability to acquire new skills and buy skills using the Computer Shop. That allowed me to expand my pilots abilities even moving pilots in a different direction from what they were originally intended to be. The battles themselves did become a bit tedious at times but the Battle Linking system did allow for some nice combos moves that saved my butt more than once during some extremely close missions.

All in all, I think that FM4 is an excellent game. But, the caveat here is that you have to be a hardcore turn-based strategy fan to really appreciate the game. Because of the sometimes long and tedious cutscenes, I gave it only 4 stars for fun but overall its really a 5 star game. The graphics are not sub-par. It's a strategy game people, you have to expect a top down 3D view for that type of game.

Great game...if you have the time

This is a superb turn based strategy. he graphics are nice, the amount of control in customising your units is great. The story is weak, but if you ignore that the game itself is awesome. I recommend this to any strategy buff you owns a PS2.

What happened?

After playing through FM3 at least 20 times, when I had heard Square Enix was going to be making FM4 I was extatic. Finally after long months of waiting I was able to finally purchase the game. After about 8 hours of gameplay the game found itself amid the rest of the trash on my bedroom floor. What happened?? How could FM4 be such a disappointment? All Square had to do was keep all the features of FM3, create a new intriging storyline, boost the graphics, and thats all she wrote. They boosted the graphics, started a decent storyline (from the 8 hours of the game that I played) but took out way to many features that made FM3 so great. They completey destroyed the customization system in this game. Pilots skills are basically pre set. It doesnt matter how long you practice with your weapons anymore bc you can only get skills for the beginning weapons your characters start our with. Wanzers designs are sub par at best and very generic. Forget about trying to capture enemy wanzers. They completely removed that feature from the game. So no more slicing and dicing captured enemy wanzers (one of the coolest features I thought in FM3) They got rid of the net surfing. I am sure plenty of ppl thought this feature was annoying and useless in FM3. Well it never really affected the game so if players didnt like the net they didnt have to use the feature. The net would only reward players who took the time to surf and discover all the hidden training maps and programs you could download. Remeber this review was only written based on 8 hrs of gameplay. But for me thats all that was needed. They really killed the skill system in my opinion. And that was the top reason why I loved FM3 so much, for its EXP and Skill system. This game will never touch my PS2 again.

fun for robot and mech fans

front mission 4 is game with mechinized robots and cool turn-based gameplay, you can buy and use many differant weapons and parts for your wanzer(the robot) you can customize almost every thing about it to. The beginning of the game is fun, the storyline is good, but then it gets hard fast. theres a lot replaying levels to level up so you can be strong enough for the next level, and knowing which one of your wanzers is best to do a certain thing is frustrating. theres so much to the game. the game is very fun once you understand how to play it, and is a good buy if you like mechs and turn-based tactics games.
