THIS IS THE SICKEST GAME EVER MADE

I want to keep it short and simple. There are no words to describe how good this game is. It is easily the best game ever made for PS2. You have to experience it. I feel like I am playing a video game from the future for Playstaion 7 or something. It is just beyond anything ever put out.

...i don't quite know how to describe what playing this game felt like. A little bit of everything was put into this experience, and yes, i said experience instead of game, and you know, you won't really understand what i mean by that until you've played and beat it yourself, as i just did myself about two hours ago, now. Took me ten hours and four minutes, and it was worth every single minute. I won't even try to go into detail as far as what this game is like, (it's be utterly useless, and i don't think i could do the game much justice with my words in any event) but i will say this; if you are a fan of honest to goodness excellent action/adventure/puzzle/thought games, then by all means, go and buy this game. If you are a fan of lush, damned perfect graphics, unbeatable gameplay, realistic scores and just plain fun escapism, then by all means, have a buy. Get this game. If you are a fan of Greek Mythology, then, for God's sake, get this game. If you grew up loving and studying it as i did, you'll love it. I HAVE NEVER seen a game that captured a certain feeling, a certain history, so incredibly well. I won't say any more. I won't bash tha truth any further into your head than i already have. Three words. GET THIS GAME.

God of War - Circa 2005

GOOD:
- Lots of combat in a Devil May Cry style, which is challenging but not too easy or too difficult (for most video gamers)
- Cool combos and fighting moves help make sure the game doesn't get stale
- Mature and original story

BAD:
- Some parts of the game can be annoying or tough (like some puzzles or cheap enemies)
- Some unlockable content is really difficult to get (in challenge o the gods mode)
- Might be too Bloody or violent for some people

IF IT FITS YOUR TASTE:
- This game is pretty bloody and violent and also there is some nudity (like topless women), so I would suggest it's not for kids or people sentient to that sort of stuff
- Simple combos strikes and small puzzles like Devil May Cry make up most of the combat

GAME ITS MOST ASSOCATED TOO:
- Devil May Cry
- Rygar: The Legendary Adventure
- Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks

ADDITIONAL NOTES:
- After you beat the game there is a challenge of the gods mode you can truly test your skill here and unlock stuff as well
- There is also a museum mode (to be unlocked) where you see older models of current characters and enemies

This game is God-Like. It really should not be missed under any circumstances

You have all heard of this game. May have played it, many have praised it. But here's my take on it. I bought this game when it first came out. I hadn't heard of it til GS posted their review. I heard great things about it and had extra money so I went out and purchased it. It was one of the best blind buys I have ever made.

From the opening scene I was drawn into this world. It is one that we have rarely scene: it is beautiful, but I'll get to that later on. The storyline is very simple: driven by revenge, Kratos (the "hero" of our tale) embarks on an epic journey to bring down Ares, the God of War. There is more to it than that but you need to play this game in order to truly appreciate it. I won't ruin anything here.

Graphics. This is one of the best looking games of this generation. Period. Second only to, IMO, Metal Gear Solid (I'm talking consoles, not PC games remember). Everything is just gorgeous. The characters move ever so fluidly. The character models are great to look at. Some of course are less detailed than others but its easily able to overlook these as you'll be caught up in everything else. The locales are beautiful. More than once you'll stop and just looks around and take everything in. This also leads me into the art of the game. The art direction is fantastic. There are normal cutscenes and there are the different ones (you'll know these). The art direction in these different scenes are simply captivating. The style of art used is one of which I myself have never witnessed in a game before. The characters and environments are 2D but are treated as 3D. It's elegant really. A sight to behold. The worlds look wonderful as well. Everything is so lush and beautiful, just like Greece is made out to be. Everything is detailed down to the last rock or brick (or whatever they used back then). No detail is too small, which is quite commendable.

The sound in this game is again, IMO, second only to MGS3. The music in this is comparable to that of a big budget Hollywood production. Everything music-wise fits perfectly with the situation at hand. Sometimes it is quite subtle too as to where you don't directly notice it but sets the mood and would hamper the game were it not there. The voice acting is strong as well. Everyone fits their role and not one that I can remember seems awkward or out of place. Linda Hunt is wonderful as the narrator. Her distinct voice fits perfectly and is a joy to hear every time she speaks. Kratos' voice actor (Terrence Carson) is great as well. He brings his own personality to Kratos and it fits like a shoe. Everyone else is strong as said before.

Gameplay is amazingly fluid. Combos are awesome looking yet simple to pull off. This is great for someone like me who was never too fond of game like Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat's complex combo controls. I never liked have to push up, down, left, right, left, left, left, diagonal up left, diagonal down right, B, B, A, up and B to pull off a combo. In God of War it is as simple as O,O,O. That's it but it pulls off an amazing looking combo. Its all fluid and a true joy to use. It makes the game that much better.

One very large fault in this game is its length. It can be beaten, first time through, in less than 8 hours. I am now at the point where I can beat it on God Mode in under 5. On all the difficulty levels (except God Mode) it's way too easy. Yes there are some choke points but overall, its too damn easy. I like a challenge in my games and definetly want them to last longer than this did, expecially if it is this good. There are some graphical glitches every now and then and not all the characters are up to par. Some are downright muddy, but miles ahead of other games'. The level design in Hades is the worst part of the game. Its some horrible platforming that goes on and on. The wall of spikes annoyed the hell out of me, it's damn hard.

This game is an instant classic. Its how games should be. Its fun, it sounds amazing, it plays great, it has wonderful characters, an awesome story and a heart. If you like action games you need to pick this game up, there's really no two ways about it.

My husband brought this game home and I thought, "Oh no, I guess we're not having multisyllable conversations for the next few weeks..." But to my surprise not only did he ABSOLUTELY love this game but I would sit next to him and watch, totally transfixed by the amazing detail and effort that the creators poured into this game. I caught myself saying, "Baby, aren't you going to play your game?" This game is incredible and while I am not at all a gamer I'm tempted to try it out! Everyone not shocked by gore (and I mean LOTS of gore) should play this game. Every game should be this well made.

A game everyone will enjoy, everyone over 17 that is

"God of War" is truly one of those special games that you may never be able to stop playing. I have already beaten the game 3 times and am currently playing a new game right now. But what is it that makes "God of War" so special, so irresistable. Many will probably say because it's jam packed with senseless sex and violence. I think the game has so much more to offer, like a great story.
The game stars Kraitos who is so depressed he makes Edgar Allen Poe look like Mister Rogers. A long time ago he sold his soul to Ares [the god of war] and all the other gods in olympus. One day, Ares has Kraitos do something so horrible it haunts his dreams. So Kraitos makes a deal with Athena, the goddess of wisdom, ten years later. Apperantly, Ares has gone nuts and attacked Athens and Zeus has forbidden the gods to fight so Athena can't do anything about it. So she sends Kraitos to fetch Pandora's Box which holds the power to kill a god. In return Kraitos shall be forgiven for his past sins.
The first thing you'll notice as you play is that the graphics are astounding. I spent the five minutes of the game wondering how they got an Xbox game to work on my PS2. Then I realized that this was simply superb detailing and rendering. And for a game this good looking, it contains no glitches and fast loading times that are few in number. The sounds are amazing as well. From the voice overs to the sound effects to the soundtrack, everything is done to perfection.
The gameplay is also amazingly done. The combat system is easy to get into but never repetetive and always insanely violent. The systme will allow you to do the most gruesome moves imaginable. This also gives you multiple ways to kill an enemy. Do I simply run over and decapitate him, or do I wrestle him to the ground and shove my blades through his skull. The game does include a few simple puzzles but they don't last long and are easy once you find a pattern
The game's biggest selling point are the boss battles, which feature some of the largest most ferocious monster I've ever seen. They will test both your skill in the combat system and your thumb reflexes as you dodge and cut through each one. Unfortunately, there are only three total bosses.
This brings me to the game's few minor problems. The game only has a small variety of bad guys. However, each enemy comes with a wide variety of moves so you probably won't notice. Also, the game is way to short. But it has dozens of unlockable extras and lots of replay value. It should probably also be mentioned this game is for adults. The intense violence isn't all, the game also includes plenty of nudity and sex.
However, if you are mature enough, the game will not disappoint, usually. There are hundreds of pros that out way the few cons and more than enough to justify a purchase. I promise you shall love this game.

Epic Adventure

Forget everything I've said about every other game I've reviewed - this is THE game. Everything about this game is incredible; the graphics, the control, the gameplay its all flawless. The story is fantastic as well. You play Kratos, a Spartan soldier who basically makes a deal with the devil, then regrets it as he is forced to perform inhuman acts in the name of Ares, the God of War. The story is layed out in chapters, to give the game the feel of a Greek Epic, and it succeeds in every sense of the word. Levels are challenging, but not frustrating, and the ease with which you can pull of great combos makes battling enemies a pleasure. This title is a must have for any PS2 owner, and I can give it my highest recommendation with no guilt whatsoever.

It takes a great deal for me to buy M rated games. I swear by my belief that violence isn't needed to make a videogame good (though I'll never believe in censorship), and nudity should have never even been mentioned in the same sentence. For a long time videogames were geared toward children. Yes, those children grew up. But, and this is big, those one-time children also had children who will no doubt play video games. And the rating system sucks, to be completely honest.

But with that out of the way, I highly recommend this game (what a change, huh?). It is easily the best PS2 game of 2005, even better than Metal Gear Solid 3. And it's better because it's more of an experience than an actual game. There are few moments when you can put the controller down. Everything is interactive, with mini-games popping up in the oddest places to change the pace. Visually, it's eye-popping, both for its action and its graphics, with very little slowdown during the intense moments.

Then there comes the story. I'm not afraid to admit this: I'm a mythology buff. I can name nearly every Greek or Roman deity there is, their specific domains of power, and some stories that can be told of these gods and goddesses. God of War doesn't disappoint with its accuracy, and even throws its own visual interpretation of some of the gods (Hades actually looks like a god of hell).

Anyone 17+ should own this game. It's the absolute best action game on the market right now, contains one of the most interesting characters outside of Final Fantasy, and has tons of replay value. (This game contains nudity, extreme violence and excessive gore.)

Worst Great Game I Ever Played

This is a great game, no question. Production values are super-high, and the game stays entertaining and full of great new ideas all the way through. In many ways, this game reminds me of Prince of Persia. I am sure the developers of GoW have played PoP a few times ;-)

However, there are several differences. There is more fighting here, and it is done very well. While in PoP fighting is annoying, here it is great fun. The things you can pull off are just amazing. I especially like the fights while climbing a wall.

On the other hand, PoP is much better in pretty much anything else. Particularly the "walk the plank" balancing acts are done very well in Prince of Persia, while in God of War, they are a constant source of frustration. I was tempted to turn down the difficulty (an option the game provides when one fails to often) in "jump, balance, and run" parts, but then I didn't because I felt the game would have gotten too easy in other parts.

What amazed me about this game are all the new ideas the developers had. I enjoyed all the puzzles, because they are not too hard and don't get in the way of the action. Practically all of them can be solved without a walkthrough or strategy guide.

So what didn't I like? For one, there is the camera! What a mess! It almost seems like they just didn't have time to finish it. There are a number of times where you fail due to the bad camera angle (which you can't change). In a game of this class, this sort of problem just must not happen!

And then there is the play balance. While at times, the game flows very well and at an adequate level of difficulty, at other times, things are just plain sadistic. I would like to meet the psychopath who designed the "rotating blade climbing wall", just so I can give him a piece of my mind. The thing is so ridiculously difficult, I literally slammed the controller on the floor several times (this is the first game where I actually did this for real). You keep climbing, and it is already very difficult, and then at the very top, it is a matter of luck whether you will make it or not. And if your hand just touches the side of a blade (which would not even hurt me, but apparently it kills the tough-ass God of War) you fall to the very bottom and have to start over (if you have any life left in you). This is just plain BS. Spend some time in play-testing and balancing for crying out loud.

Another thing that might be worth pointing out is the brutality in this game. Never have I played a game where violence was this graphic. I guess it goes with the story, but I could have done with a lot less.

Overall, this is a very good game. Some people even say this is the best PlayStation 2 game ever. It certainly is one of the better PS2 games I own. Possibly the best. However, it isn't even close to being the best game I own counting other platform. If this is as good as it gets, then it isn't embarrassing for PS2, but not particularly impressive either.
