Dirty Pool from Red Octane

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 4 / 34
Date: November 08, 2006
Author: Amazon User

In case you haven't heard, RedOctane, the makers of this game, are suing The Ant Commandos, maker of the Wireless Freedom V Guitar Controller, for marketing a guitar controller to compete with RedOctane's own. Why is this important to my review?

Because I was unable to play Guitar Hero II as a result of Red Octane's dirty pool. For this game, they changed how signals from the guitar controller are interpreted by the game. . .making the Wireless Freedom V completely nonfunctional. If you have purchased the Freedom V and like to rock out with your wireless guitar, you're out of luck in playing this game. . .that controller doesn't work.

Because RedOctane's own SG Controller feels cheap and flimsy (the one I bought with the first Guitar Hero shattered in my hands), I swear by my Freedom V. So much, in fact, that I choose my Freedom V over Guitar Hero II.

RedOctane's smarmy little legal battle cost them my business. If you like your Freedom V, hate to say it but you'll need to avoid this game.

Incompatible with 2nd party controllers

We have the original GH1 controller and a 2nd party controller. The second party controller works with GH1 but not GH2. Send RedOctane a note and they stated they don't test for second party compatibility. I think this is a bum rap that they force you to buy their controllers. Last RedOctane game I every buy. Take all you can from the customer. Bad on ya.

Rent before you buy if you played the original.

What happened to the sound in this game? Heavy majority of the songs sound like they were recorded thru a wall. The sound is far inferior to the one provided in the original game. Whereas the original sound was clean, crisp and bold (especially in Godzilla), this game's sound is muffled significantly; game has numerous tracks that you can barely distinguish the guitar from the singer. No matter what I did to my stereo system, I could not get the game to sound right. Furthermore, what happened to quality of the covers? Some of these are absolutely bad; definitely below the quality produced by Harmonix in the first game. The only redeeming quality is that the song list is good and graphics are improved. Rent before you buy... overall I'm disappointed after paying full price. IF this was $20 game, the rating would be better.

This is a fun game and includes some great songs but some of the songs are very worrisome. In my opinion the game deserves an M rating due to the material in a few of the selections. Even if the profanity in these songs has been removed the content is disturbing. Why choose bands like Danzig,Lamb of God (aka Burn the Priest) Megadeath, Rage Against the Machine and Avenged Sevenfold-when there are so many other, less extreme bands, to choose from? Check out the lyrics on the songs by these bands BEFORE you buy this...we returned ours. Otherwise a fun and challenging game.

Does NOT work with the GHIII wireless Les Paul on PS3!

I was looking forward to playing this game, and expected that my supposedly backwards compatible PS3 and new GHIII wireless Les Paul would be all I needed. The game starts up fine, but the guitar doesn't connect. Activision/Red Octane did not make clear that it wouldn't work. So basically purchased a game that is unusable, and I had to open it (thus making it non-returnable) to find this out.

Poor graphics

If you've already played Guitar Hero III and just want some new songs don't bother. The graphics and sound quality are so disappointing that you'll quit half way through and go back to GHIII. There's no challenge at all. I don't even want to know what the original GH is like.

Very cool, but leave the Satanic/Wiccan symbols out please!

When I play this game,I usually rock with Judy Nails,Pandora or Casey Lynch(I like looking at a chick rather than some guy) One day however,I decided to try out some of the other characters out of boredom.

When I selected Izzy Sparks,I was quite shocked to see the neck of his guitar is decorated with pentagrams AKA Satanic/Wiccan symbols of worship.

This was a very poor choice in taste on the part of Red Octane;they could
have used any other type of decorations:flames, snakes, bats, pitchforks etc.
But instead they choose to incorporate a symbol which is used in the rituals of cults.

All parents should be warned about this,as the game is rated T for teen,
and only because of lyrics.I have a feeling if Satanic/Wiccan reference was listed on there, parents wouldn't have bought it for their kids, and for good reason.Once again,we have the entertainment industry using dishonest tactics in it's advertising;and making the decision of what's appropriate for minors.Kids as young as eight,DO play this game!

When you factor in the choice of design used for Izzy's guitar and the fact that you have songs from metal bands called Lamb of God and Avenged Sevenfold ala Beast And The Harlot--that ending lyric mockingly states,
"I don't believe in fairy tales;you made the wrong decision and it's easy to see."--you have to wonder if Red Octane doesn't have it's own special agenda to push towards the youth.Let me also mention that the bonus track on Guitar Hero 1 was called "Cheat The Church."

I used to love playing this game;now I just don't enjoy it that much at all anymore.Needless to say,I'll be skipping Guitar Hero 3.I think I'll spend my time doing something better like...oh,I don't know...learn how to play and master a REAL guitar!

Not quite what I would've hoped for...

I agree with the concerns over the sound quality, it's very poor. Everything just seems muddled together. I didn't know a lot of these songs going in and I wish I still didn't. I loved the sound track for the first game, it's what made it, but this go around the listing is sub par, much like how Amplitude was the Frequency (other harmonix titles). Better gameplay than the first, but there are so many songs that I pray I get a five star the first time because I don't want to hear that song again. War Pigs? Whoever decided to put that song in the game should have their college degree revoked. The last game already had two Ozzie tracks and this one has no guitar through half the song. And while I love Kansas, half of Carry on My Wayward Son is non-guitar as well. I guess this game is good, but it's very bitter sweet because of the songs (though kudo's for including some Alice in Chains and Shadows Fall). Something about it doesn't have that same good feel to it like the last.

Awesome but maybe not for little kids

I'm 11 years old and my parents bought this for me. I think that this game is the best game you could buy,but I think that it should also include a better mix of music for all ages. I was a little shocked hearing some profanity in some of the songs. I would like to see this game with some christian music. But over all I could play this game all day.

meh... pretty good

when i first heard the reviews on the sound being off or the game messing up i thought they just got a bad cd or something... unfortunatly they were right... the game or at least my game would freeze for a few seconds in the middle of the song and slow up the sound with the notes and it was very annoying and i almost gave up! but the designers must have realised this and put in the "Lag Calibration" edit thing... you pause and go under video setting and do the lag calibration which runs a short test on your tv and game so it works out all the kinks... unfortunatly you have to so this many times but if you do it and keep playing through it wont lag at all any more (note you wont have to run the test on all songs but any songs that freeze up you will want to do this)... other then this big glitch the game is amazing! the songs are great and even better is the store. theres so much more to buy in this game, 3 characters to unlock (the grim reaper, Clive Livingston (GH1), and Xavier Stone (GH1)), more guitars, more finishs for the guitars, ATON of bonus songs, 2 videos (behind the sceans and the making of the songs), and finally outfits for the characters!!! With all the extra stuff the game is amazing. Working out the technical glich does suck but it is totally worth it!!! ROCK ON!
