aw snap, this game owns

While the game does have some flaws(i'll get to those later) it has a lot of other things that make it great. First off, to all those people who say the game's to easy, ...(hardest difficulty level), just go to the options menu and turn that on and you'll find yourself having a bit of trouble just standing in one place and shooting. The game has excellent graphics, very little if any slowdown, crisp and clean cutscenes, and a very interesting story. The main character is good but he has very little personality throughout most of the game. The demolition shots are also cool, who wouldnt want to shoot up undead thugs with a missle launcher/coffin. Boss battles are cool, but have little depth. And finally, this game is just plain fun. Its a game you dont have to work hard to look cool in. As for the bad things, Its short. You could easily pick up a controler and beat it without putting it down. another weakness is grave, the main character, is very slow and immobile. Finally, the game has little variety, it almost seems like one big level. Great game, but in my opinion, too short. Quality may be better than quantity, but quality is no good if you run out in 2 hours.

...Like playing a movie

"Gungrave" casts you as Brandon, a fairly ambiguous undead [killer] whose background is only partially revealed, and, being dead already, he is very hard to [eliminate]. Until you actually play the game, you have no idea just how tough this fellow can be! Bullets seem to bounce off of him, his health replenishes itself with the more carnage he causes, and on top of that he is armed with two heavy-duty pistols that never run out of ammo, and a coffin that also doubles as a rocket launcher. Oh, yeah, and he wants revenge against the Syndicate that used to employ him, and he means to get it without ever uttering a single word. Such is the premise for this anime action game which either bears an eerily coincidental resemblance to Monolith's "Blood" series or borrows from the games liberally. After all, you're an anti-hero resurrected from the grave dressed in semi-Western duds sporting heavy firepower, only in this case the game plays like a cross between "Max Payne" and "Time Crisis." It's good stuff, but good, at best, is all that can be said of it given some of the developers' very significant oversights.

The Pros:

· Excellent cel-shaded graphics bring you into a very creative and memorable world.
· Awesome cut-scenes, and an interesting, if sometimes muddled, storyline. This game is like playing a movie.
· The action is hot and heavy, and never relents.
· Your character really does feel unstoppable, and sometimes it gives you a twisted sense of pleasure to be taking on his in-game persona.
· Great soundtrack and sound effects.

The Cons:

· As I said, this game is like playing a movie - and it will probably take you as long to finish the game as it would to watch a movie. This game is inexcusably short-lived.
· The action is jaw-dropping at first, but prolonged periods with the game will eventually numb your taste for it, as it can get repetitive.
· Yes, it's a rush to feel as unstoppable as Brandon sometimes does, but he is so bloody tough that he is rarely imperiled (with the exception of some later boss battles). Looking for a challenge? Avoid this one.

This game is hard to recommend to everyone given its mechanics and brevity, but for those of you who want an arcade-style experience at home with a better story than most, this is for you. It's not deep, but it has style to spare, and I found it impossible not to enjoy it while it lasted. It just didn't last very long. If you can get it at a low price and you dig the concept, then go for it. Otherwise you might want to pass.

Final Grade: C+ (or 4 stars on a curve)

Great game, not worth 50 dollars though.

This game is one of the coolest games I'd ever seen on the PS2. It has stylish Cel-Shaded graphics, a cool main character, and brutal, insane, out of control action. This is a game no one should miss as it is incredibly original, even if it is just shooting. The one major con about this game is it is on 30 minutes long. After that it's over. The end. However you do unlock new features. The game's prob worth playing more than once because it is entertaining. So rent it. If you love it and somehow get addicted to it, buy it. Avoid the M rating and the back of the box because the game is easily worthy of bearing the T rating and has nothing more objectionable than your average arcade shooter. It also has a blood off feature on the options menu which is originaly turned off when you first pop in the game. Enough said, check this one out.

this game is nothing more than an insane death march of pure mindless fun. there aren't any puzzles or tricks (like say ICO) nor does it offer slow paced strategic action (for example the mark of kri or way of the samurai). rather, gungrave focuses on good graphics and non-stop action. it is definately worth playing if you enjoy action games. if action isn't your cup of tea then your you'll probably want to avoid gungrave.

Gungrave is not good

If you like to dress up as japanese anime characters and hang out at a convention center then by all means throw down fifty bucks, but for anyone wanting a good playable video game. Run away. This game looks great and has all the visuals down including all the john woo esque gunplay. However, the gameplay is nonexistent. You could beat this game with your feet, all you do is press one button over and over and over and over until everything dies. You're pretty much impervious to damage, which is good since you move slower than one of those veritech fighters in that bad robotech game. Your choice.

Gungrave is a very big step up for video gaming

Gungrave is enticing even from the cover art. The controls are simple, the style is original and never fades, and the genius behind the ever-famous anime Trigun has done it again.
Beyond the Grave was formerly a syndicate employee who got the short end of the stick for being the "goody-goody" that he was.
After a ressurection followed by some genetic mutation Grave seeks revenge for EVERYTHING that has happened to his life.
His best friend is now his arch nemesis.

Grave is packing more than could be imagined (thanks to the wonders of anime) and will destroy everything and everyone in his path for the greater good.
The anime cell animation and CG combination looks astonishing and very fresh while the 3D environments are destructible as well.
A counter system is introduced for style, and the extras (recieved once passing the game with a certain rank) are worth passing the game for.
A very big step up for video games and very entertaining.

Also recomended: Trigun. On VHS and DVD.

What a let down!!

This is a good idea wasted. The creator should have put more time into the game play. Just simply blowing up things is brainless. A waste of a cool looking anti-hero. What is up with the 6 little levels. I finished this game in one day. Major letdown.

this game rocks in my opinion . although it does have a few flaws. the game is short, has no replay value, and all u do is shoot to kill. but the game has very unique graphics like a cross between anime and devil's may cry. the playability and control is good . so unless u like anime and a "kill them and nuthing else" type of game, i suggest renting it period.

If you love the simplicity of destroying everything in your sight, then this is the game for you. No need to think, just destroy. If you like tight graphics along with Anime, this is a definite buy. Again, this game gives you the simple things some of us enjoy, destruction.
