A Unique and Addictive gaming experience

Katamari Damacy is a hard game to describe to someone. All you can say is "You push a ball around and roll things up and make the ball bigger". This doesn't sound too appealing, but put the game in and you will more than likely be hooked instantly. With catchy music, many different types of levels to play in and different objectives for you to solve, this game just might be one of the PS2's finest.

Here is the basic premise of the game: you have to make big enough "Katamari" balls and when you do they become stars in the sky, since the stars were gone thanks to the king of the cosmos. The first level doesn't require too large of a ball at the end of the time limit, but it gets more difficult with each level. You may roll around in a house, in a park, or around the city. Additionally some levels will require you to roll up as many crabs as you can in order to create the constellation "Cancer". The bigger you make the ball, the bigger the objects you can roll up, like people and cows.

This really is a fun game and the best thing it has going for it is its simplicity. You only use the right and left analog sticks through each level, so you don't have to even think that much when you are playing. This is a game that all ages could enjoy. The music is very catchy, the graphics are pretty cool, and the camera angles are awesome. I am usually big on RPGs but this game is one I will keep in my collection. I give it 5 stars for being original and most of all for providing a fun gaming experience.

Addictive fun for everyone

The game is simple to understand, challenging for all ages, and has a really fun soundtrack. This game, as well as it's sequal We (heart) Katamari are fun examples of game designers thinking outside of the traditional box and coming up with a game that is both original and addictive.

Really fun game, a bit frustrating for a game newbie

I am a 65 year old grandma and I love this game. As my daughter says, it is crazy. You start rolling around a ball which picks up stuff as it rolls. You have to get it to a certain size within the allotted time. You can only pick up small stuff at first, then as the ball increases in size, you pick up bigger and bigger stuff. You have to manuver the ball up ramps and turn it so that it picks up what you want. Rats run at you and knock stuff off. Your ball won't roll right after picking up things like pencils and legos. It is so much fun! I played at least 6 times trying to beat the first level then accidently rolled into another room where there was tons of stuff to pick up. I'm still learning. The balls are placed into the sky and turned into stars to replace the stars that were accidently destroyed. No shooting! No blood! Good clean fun!!!!

shallow, but a great ride anyhow

the time i spent with this little gem from some crazy game developers in Japan was very unique. at first, i tested the two-player mode with my three year old cousin, and he loved it. the controls/the analog sticks, take only a brief moment to get used to, and after that, all you have to do is roll around and make a huge ball. and you know what, it's a hell of a blast. the single player game is short but sweet, but at twenty bucks, it's worth it. and i have a feeling that this insane ball-rolling game will become a rare treasure in the future...intelligent qube anyone? but really, the game is just plain fun. you start off needing to build a small ball to create a star (the story: your drunkard father, who also happens you be the king of the cosmos, got smashed and destroyed all the stars and the moon. now you, the prince, must cover your father's tracks and roll up massive balls of everything you can see to fill the night sky of it's beauty once again.) and every mission after that requires you to get your ball, or "katamari" bigger and bigger until it's monstrous in size. and the whole time you are totally oblivious to how big your ball is getting until you start rolling over entire cities. but the sheer amount of things you can roll up into your ball is crazy. here's a short list of things i can remember:

thumbtacks. erasers. chocolate. candy. dominos. oranges. birds. cats. dogs. fences. road cones. street lights. fish. cows. cars. houses. huge flying Japanese superheros. giant squid. rainbows. skyscrapers. navy vessels. navy bases. islands. bridges. mice. carrots. woman. men. children. children riding bikes. books. televisions. shurikens. katanas. giraffes. bulls. bulldozers. trees. campfires. treasure chests. police. monster trucks. and this isn't even half the stuff you can roll into a ball.

the amount of items in this game is staggering. the only complaint i really have is that i wish it were longer. you can beat it in an hour or so. but the multiplayer is a good distraction from everyday run of the mill action shooters or adventure games. pick this one up if you're looking for some good old wierd, happily destructive fun (just wait til you hear the people scream when you roll over them, it's hilarious). that being said, i wish Japan would sell more wacky games over here in the states, it would sure be a breath of somewhat fresh air.

useless info: katamari damacy translates to "clumpsoul". strangely addictive either way.

Weirdest Game Ever!

This game has to be the most quirky and infectious game I have ever played, next to Destroy All Humans and Burnout 3. You are the 5cm tall Prince, the son of the King of All Cosmos. Well, your dad gets drunk one night, and destroys all the stars in the sky. Now it's up to you, the bite-sixed Prince, to get them back. You go to Earth and roll evertyhing up into a clump. It will make a star, or if you choose, stardust.
This is a game I would highly reccomend.

Pros: Only uses two analog sticks, good for beginners
Quirky and infectious
Awesome soundtrack

Cons: Absolutely nothing!

????????????? But FUN!

the developers of this game were obviously on an overdose of every drug ever created! This is the wierdest game i have ever and ever will play in my entire life! But in a good way . . . the game actualy has shadow of brilliance combined with block and and solid objects. The game however is VERY fun! which makes me wonder about drugs . . . (just kidding, drugs are bad!) all ages will find a whimsical joy in this odd, fun, and blurry brilliance. Its a bragain, u have no excuse!

My brother wrote a review about this game and this game ROCKS! If parents are reading this.... Please buy it for your kids. The totorial can teach you alot. Even my brother didnt know how to do a quick turn untill the last star.

My brother was looking at this game a couple of months ago and thought it was stupid. Then a few months later, he saw this game on Amazon.com and saw that all the reviews were good. Then I didnt see this game untll a couple of weeks ago. I thought it would be a fun game so I bought it.

I started playing it when I first got home and loved it! The first star to get was kind of boring because you only had to get 10 cm. But the last level was the moon and you had to get 300 meters in 20 min. The first level you had three min.

There is a story along the way a family who's dad is going to the moon but they canceled the travel because there was no moon in the sky. This game is great and when the king realeses the Katamari in the sky, you can actully see what your Katamari looks like when you rolled it up. BUY THIS GAME IF YOU WANT TO HAVE FUN!

Specifically recommended by X-Play on TV. ABSOLUTELY agree that the recommendation was good. I rolled my eyes at my wife when she wanted to spend 19 bucks on this game and I think I actually called it "totally retarded". She let me play it first and within 3 minutes I was hooked. She's not allowed to play it because it's MINE. ALL MINE... (Yes, I'm 29 years old and she STILL can't have it!). I'd recommend this game to anyone NOT looking for an advanced game requiring weeks of play and advanced storyline. If you like Tetris but want a little more variety and just a little more skill requirement (and a good laugh), this game is for you. There's something oddly satisfying by rolling over the dog and seeing his legs twitter in the air when 5 minutes earlier he was pushing you around... WEIRD? Yes. FUN? Yes. I'd say good for 12+ years because young kids may find this too boring because they won't appreciate how strange and cool this game really is.

FUN!

Controls take a little time to get used to, but before you know it, you will be a pro.

Highly Recommended.

My husband and daughter are the game players in the family and they haven't played any other game since getting this one. They love it and I've been told they wish there were more games like this to buy.
