a halo killer or killed by halo

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 2 / 4

if u ask me, this is better than halo. Halo feels more cartooney to me. I dont like halo i think it is a horrible franchise but... Killzone is morerealistic and the graphics look like PS3! theyr amazing and no frame rate issues in it.Plus the combat is intense and fierce. Dont let the costumes fool u. The enemy soldiers can take a lot of hits and takes a lot of strategy involved to kill thes guys. It made me feel that i was in saving private ryan buy it.

Disappointing

During the PS2's lifecycle, the FPS genre as a whole has been surprisingly underwhelming for the system. Sony's own Killzone was supposed to change all that, being labeled a "Halo killer" when first unveiled. Well, here we are only a few years later, and the original Killzone is still pretty underwhelming itself. Killzone puts you in the shoes of one of four playable characters as you battle in an interstellar war. What sets Killzone apart from other FPS' is the game's very well done story and ideas. The game's story alone will make you want to get further into the game to see what happens next. Whether or not that happens though is entirely up to you. The single player mode is lengthy and is heavy on action elements, but there are a number of noticeable glitches and bugs that mar the graphics and gameplay. Thankfully though, the multiplayer mode is pretty sweet, even though there are some lag problems when you take Killzone online. The game also features some great cinematics and voice acting to boot, but it's just a crying shame that more time wasn't put into getting the bugs out and getting rid of the overly generic feel that is prevelant throughout the game's length that would have made Killzone something special. All in all, Killzone isn't a bad FPS for the PS2, but one can't help but feel disappointed after playing it. Hopefully Sony's next installment for the next-gen will be every bit as drool-worthy as it seems to be.

Hmmmm....Am I the ONLY ONE who DOESN'T like this game?????

First of all let me start by saying, I LOVE these types of games.....But, I dunno, I've had this game for a while now, and well.....I've played much better games than this on my PS2!

I think it's one of the cheesiest games for the PS2! One of the biggest let-down's for 2004 PS2 gaming.....I don't see what all the rave is about. This game certainly isn't one of the greatest games for the PS2! Nor is it even an incredible FPS......

HELL....in my opinion Quake II blows this game away! And that game is already a few years old! (I'd much rather play Quake II)

I'll admit, I like the surroundings in the game, the graphics are nice, gameplay is sort-of OK, I like that you can play multiple characters...but there's quite a few things left to be desired in this game.....

HERE'S MY MAJOR COMPLAINT: I hate the fact that you have to shoot and waste approximately 3 million bullets at each bad guy just to kill them. It's almost a joke how many times you have to shoot some of these guys! Now, I like SOME of the weapons you can use, while others downright SUCK! The worst weapon (besides most of them) is the Sniper Rifle....10 minutes just to aim! WHOOPIE! By the time you have aimed properly, the guy's out of view! Next is the Rocket Launcher....I mean, when you got a Rocket Launcher on your shoulder, one would assume you are ready to kick some bad-guy [...], one would also assume that you could take out MULTIPLE baddies with the pull of the rocket-launcher trigger... Right? WROOOOOOOONG!

Case in point: Even when using some of the biggest & baddest of weapons in this game, you still have to hit some of these guys multiple times (or head-on), not to mention the rocket launcher doesn't even launch rockets in a straight FREAKIN' line!!!! And even when a rocket lands 2 feet in front of a bad-guy, it doesn't even kill them!!!!! I understand the fact that these guys are wearing some super space armor and such, but come on.......A ROCKET SHOULD KILL ALL BAD GUYS WITHIN A 20 FT RADIUS! AT THE VERY LEAST A 10 FOOT RADIUS!!!!!!

Personally, I get WAY more enjoyment out of playing Quake II, Vietnam, or Shell Shocked, than I get out of playing this game. Hell, all 3 Medal Of Honor games are WAY BETTER than this game.

This game was a serious let-down for me.

game is awsome

I am not really an all out gamer. I had hours of fun with this game -like 225 hours- I finished the game and hope to see a part two. Being stuck in Iraq, this allowed time to get away, always working towards saving humanity- (just being corney). Hope you enjoy the game- worth the $20 i spent.

A Lack of Bug-Testing/Quality Assurance Drags This Promising Game Down

As early as 2003, pro-Sony fanboys had trumpeted Guerilla Games' PS2 exclusive, Killzone, as a "Halo killer". It's almost understandable; after all, the only substantial PS2-exclusive first person shooter was the fairly primitive Red Faction, and Red Faction 2 ended up being so viciously bland and mediocre that the series has been on hiatus since 2002. That pretty much left multiplatform games such as Turok: Evolution, Medal of Honor: Frontline, and Timesplitters 2 as the only FPS options on PS2- games which saw better versions on the more powerful Xbox (which also had a controller more suited for FPS games). With no real answer to Microsoft's Halo, Killzone was billed by many as Sony's answer to Halo.

Make no mistake: this is no Halo killer. It will not make you forget about Halo, Halo 2 or that girl at Starbuck's who looks kind of like Halo's Cortana. After all, Killzone, for one, lacks the driveable vehicles that Halo is known for. What this can best be billed as is Medal of Honor set in the future. Essentially, your character, and up to 3 computer-controlled squadmates (depending on how far you are in the game), fight your way through the battlefields of a besieged planetary colony under assault by the vaguely Nazi-ish Helghast, a faction of slightly mutated humans from another colony planet. It's straightforward FPS action, for sure.

The bad news is that Guerilla Games apparently never hired a QA tester, as there are all sorts of bugs and technical issues which hurt the game. The framerate is often inconsistent, and it doesn't help that sometimes pressing a button will produce literally no response. Sometimes draw distance problems will result in faraway terrain or objects flickering in and out of existence. The audio, while not great to start with (you'll find the voice-acting undulating between repetitiously annoying, cliched stereotype, and just plain uninspired), also suffers from bugs, whether a bit of prior dialogue being caught in an endless loop, or mysteriously disappearing sound effects. The game, on a whole, moves oddly slow, as if mired in molasses.

The good news is that, underneath the sheen of incompetence slathered on at the production and programming stages, there's actually an entertaining game. Level design and progression manage to be one of this game's saving graces. While the promotional angle for this game was urban combat, there's more to it than this. The first third of the game does take place inside a besieged city, and a lot of effort went into designing credible urban environments in both indoor and outdoor flavors. As the game progresses, you and your squad leave the city, and venture through war-torn beaches and docks, misty swamps, forests, barren badlands, enemy entrenchments, craggy hills, snow-covered mountains, and even a space station. The game uses a number of smaller set pieces to keep the player interested, and the game, unlike some games, isn't unduly short. The graphics are decent overall and nicely stylized, and it's obvious that the developers tried pushing the envelope of the PS2's somewhat meager capabilities to the point that the game seems like it was meant more for the Xbox. To help extend the game's lifespan for those who aren't into online gaming, Guerilla, unlike many developers, actually provided AI bots for the multiplayer games, allowing everyone to at least get a quick fix of competitive gaming in an offline, solo configuration. The not-too futuristic weapons are also pretty entertaining, especially Rico's giant howitzer/rocket grenade combo.

I also have to take my hat off to the developers for actually providing a somewhat competent squad to accompany the player. In many respects, this game actually accomplishes what Red Faction 2 promised to gamers, but never delivered. The biggest problems here, though, are the slip-shod manner in which the game was delivered to the public, and the competition from Xbox titles. By releasing this game before it was obviously ready, Sony not only delivered a product that could have used a couple more months' worth of polish, but also guaranteed negative comparisons to Microsoft's much more slick Halo 2, which came out at the same time. As whacked out as Halo 2's truncated storyline was, it was still executed more professionally than Killzone's mix of dunderhead dialogue, "square peg in a round hole" interpersonal relationships, and over-the-top forced drama. As the game is now cheap, I can certainly recommend it as more or less the only Sony-exclusive FPS for the PS2 (although I have yet to try Cold Winter), and as having a nice amount of bang for the buck. However, you have to first get past the poor presentation, which may be a deal-breaker for some.

Kill the Fun Zone

What a piece of garbage!!! I rented this game and returned it the next day because I didn't want it to plague my other PS2 games with its filth. Thank goodness I didn't buy this crap. The framerate is terrible and the screen feels like its right up in your face. I couldn't play it because it gave me a headache; the first time ever while playing video games. From what I hear, you shoot the same looking bad guys the entire game. What fun is that? I'd give it a zero. I've gotta go. Thinking about the $6 I spent on renting this game is starting to make me angry, and you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

A Very Good Game With a Few Problems

I first heard about Killzone about a year ago. The game (originally called Kin) was being developed by the Dutch programming team called Guerrilla Games. The game had been in development for over 4 years. And now after what seemed like an eternity, Killzone has arrived. The result is a very good game, with a few problems.

In Killzone you are one of four ISA soldiers attempting to fend off an assault by the Helghast. The Helghast are a splinter faction of an Earth colony who have become hardened by harsh conditions on thier newley settled planet. The Helghast army then launches a war of agression on the ISA forces.

The first thing that strikes you about this game are it's visuals. It truley is a visually stunning game. The opening cutscene shows you immediatley that this game was meticulously engineered. There's alot of attention to detail. Eventhough Killzone is set in the not too distant future (approximatley 100 years or so) it's not outrageously futuristic. Many locations and buildings have a very modern feel to them. There are a few graphical glitches here and there. The framerate does drop off slightly and there are some issues with some event triggers. One of the other problems is the enemy A.I. is prone to bouts of what I'd call "vapor lock". At times the Helghast will stand around waiting for an event trigger. A few shots will get thier attention. What I also like is the character design of the Helghast. They are very reminiscent of the soldiers in the anime film Jin Roh. The game's sound is also very good. ISA and Helghast weapons have very distinct sounds to them. Also the Helghast will curse you as they try to take you down. There's also shattering glass, footsteps changing on various surfaces. This is a good sounding game.

The gameplay is rather good. The game is a first person shooter but the action never really descends into a static pattern of "walk, shoot, reload, flip lever, crouch". The missions are very linear in nature. Then again what first person shooter isn't? There are different mission objectives and the Helghast are very tactical in nature. There are times where you'll be pinned down and have to find cover. The Helghast are no easy win. They will fight fiercely and often regroup and take cover. The various environments (ranging from jungles to city streets) provide alot of cover for your squadmates. After a few missions you are joined by 3 other playable characters. Although you are part of a squad, this game is not Rainbow Six or SOCOM. Your squad does back you up, but they aren't commandable. The playable characters range in skills and use of weapons. Luger is the stealth specialist, Templar is the jack of all trades. Rico is the heavy weapons man. And Hakaha is the spy. The controls also vary for each character. Luger is more agile while Rico is slow and plodding. The controls are also laid out very well. You won't find yourself fumbling for any buttons. The learning curve I'd say is about 45 minutes.

With no Network Adaptor I was unable to try the online modes. There are however several different offline "Battlefield" modes. These modes range from Assault to Deathmatch, using computer controlled A.I. teammates and enemeys. The offline modes are surpisingly fun as well. There are also a few "Extras". War Scenes will show you a game environment with the Helghast and ISA fighting it out. The game trailer is included as well as the opening intro so you can play it at any time you like.

So, now you're probably saying "Yeah but I heard this game was supposed to be as good as Halo". Well, I really didn't like Halo. So I can't compare Killzone to it. And I'd suggest that you don't either (if anything this game has more in common wtih Medal of Honor than Halo). But this is a good game in it's own right. Once you're a few levels deep you'll find the game quite immersive and addictive. At times I think it's almost too ambitious for the PS2 and might have made a good launch game for the PS3. What we have here is a very good game, from a fledgling developer despite what some would call "hardware limitations". If Guerrilla can iron out some of the wrinkles then they'll have a real winner on thier hands. If you're still unsure I'd suggest you give it a rental first.
