I bought this game a few days ago because my pirated copy of knockout kings 2001 was malfunctioning. I liked KK2001 a lot and didn't think twice about buying the 2002 version. To my surprise the game went backwards, the graphics are not better, the punches have no reality in them, the control layout is terrible.

EA ... me on this one! I'll stick to pirated copies of EA's
games in the future.

Funeral Pyre For The Kings and EA Sports

Oh, lawd!!! May the gods have mercy on EA sports! As said before by my fellow dissatisfied game enthusiasts, this game has tons (I mean Colossus of Rhodes tons!) of disappointments. Playing this has an "arcadish" feel, and the need for strategy is not required. Mashing buttons incoherently is not my idea of fun. After seeing Yory Boy Campas this weekend still fighting with 90 bouts under his belt, I am surprised my boxer retires after a few title defenses and was still undefeated. Most of the time I have no other choice but to fight "toe-to-toe" with your opponent (which you will win every time).
My other complain is the knockdowns come too often. I never seen anybody in real life get knockdown four times in a span of four rounds and still continue. EA sports placed about three motion graphic sequences of knockdowns. After my first fight, I've seen them all. Oh yeah, by the way EA sports, nobody curls up into a fetal position while on the canvas then regain their wits after seven seconds. I've only seen one boxer stand up after a knockdown, do a semi-conscious dance, then fall down (this was Zab Judah) again in my more than ten years of watching real boxing. Stuff like these are rare. I am sure the people who made this error-filled game never seen any boxing match.
The 10-point scoring system is gone. Walk-downs and pre-fight introductions are eliminated. Gyms, where you can work out your combinations, are history. Mills Lane and Richard Steele are no where to be found (except their foot during knockdowns). Hurricane Carter, the super underachiever, is still here unfortunately. Just because he was wrongly accused doesn't make him a boxing great. They could have placed super overachiever-world champ Livingston Bramble. I will understand the whole concept more.
Create a boxer is too stereotyping or I may say borderline racist. Only black fighters will have afros or dreadlocks, white and asian fighters come with nice tight nipped haircuts. According to this game, all asian fighters come with epicanthic eyefolds and blacks with wide and flat noses. Trunks are more limited in choices, and the selection of personal entrance music is eliminated. Exciting boxers such as Hearns, Tszyu, Gatti, Ward, Leija, Barrera are still no where to be seen. Manfredy, Quartey, Forrest and other champions from the game last year are now gone. Have EA sports been keeping up with the game, Forrest just defeated Moseley about three months ago? It was right for Teddy Atlas not to attach his name to this sorry excuse for a game.
May the soul of Aristophanes poke fun with this game. It is too depressing, even for Euripides, to think about Knockout Kings, especially if you spent 50 obols for it. Does it seem like EA sports have been slacking with their game quality lately? The trust they built in me with those great playstation 1 games has crumbled since they made me chew Triple Play 2001. EA sports needs to get some dose of reality or a whack in the head to realize they are losing their fans...

Review and hints

Highly enjoyable and extremely addictive if you're willing to learn the mechanics of the control system. It's an improvement over KK 2001, which was slow and clunky. But as you've been hearing, KK 2002 does have flaws. EA did away with the simulation aspects, and went for an arcade style this time to "please the kids", as their chief designer says. Problems: Create-a-boxer doesn't have nearly enough options; there are a totally unrealistic amount of punches thrown per bout; load times are ridiculously long, and there are no rewards whatsoever for beating the game by becoming champion and defending your belts 5 times. There's supposed to be a few cheesy bonuses, like 'teleport', but I never saw *any* after becoming champion and retiring multiple times in all divisions. Once you win, the game is over and you have to create a new boxer, that's it. Also, there are no hidden boxers, no women boxers, and not enough of the ones that are there. The dead guys are mixed in with the live ones, which ruins the reality. It's nice to have Trinidad, De La Hoya, etc, but they aren't going to be fighting Sugar Ray Robinson any time soon in real life. BUT, if you get past all that, the game has a fun point-building system which will keep you fighting all night long to gain experience for the next fight. I played non-stop for weeks. Main problem: this is a real button-masher, and you'll find that your left thumb will blister very quickly from joystick maneuvering after only a few bouts. I actually had to stop playing because of the pain, and haven't played for 3 weeks because of it. But, with no rewards for winning, I found that my passion for the game died out very quickly, and I have no desire to return to it. Hints: for your special punch, choose body blaster or zip gun. With the rest, you'll start losing when you get to the top tier of fighters. Also, don't go toe-to-toe with top-tier fighters unless your chin and stamina rating are above 80. Use your points on power and speed, and build up the rest. Don't worry about the cuts rating, it's worthless.

Not good at all

This game does have nice graphics and sound. The punch selection is pathetic. There is no way to choose body blow v. head blow. You can get your boxer to move around the ring, but you cannot truly make him duck and bob. Basically all you do is try to press your buttons faster than the computer can. If your fighter is ranked higher, no problem, fight someone tougher than you and its aggravating. Basially you just stand there and exchange blows until someone falls. No strategy.

A Big Letdown

After playing both PS versions of Knockout Kings 2001. I was
looking forward to version 2002. What a huge letdown. Instead
of improving on the game, they have chosen to almost redesign
the game. The fighters do not look as realistic as they did
in the previous version, yes the eye problems are taken care of,
however the fighters all have the same body shape, skinny waist
and big shoulders. And they all fight the same style. Were is
Muhammad Ali's ring movement ?. Here he jumps around the ring,
giving the viewer the impression he is running backwards.
Players who enjoy simple slugfests may enjoy this game. However
anyone looking to employ any skill or strategy is better off
sticking to 2001. The graphics are also a let down. With very
muted or toned down colors, nothing vivid sticks in the imagination. The decision to go with two announcers is also a
mistake, as the two either babble on, or worse repeat themselves
as they make the same comments about each fighter during the same
round !!. The punching motion is improved, however the game is
simply too hard. Players will have to spend quite a bit of time
just trying to survive, never mind trying to win. And the ' new '
career mode is not much fun either. Limiting the amount of times
you can lose, or defend the title is a bad choice. The players
of the game should decided how long THEY want to control their
careers. The only good thing I can say about this game is :
The round card girls are the best thing about this game. Oddly
enough, they look the most realistic thing on this game.
They may have enhanced the girls, but they certainly didn't
enhance the game any with the new changes. I hope they listen
to the fans and make some serious changes for 2003.

This is absolutely the worst boxing game ever, the control is slow and cumbersome. Sure it looks good but if its no fun to play who cares.

I still play the origional!

If they can make any improvements on it, even just better background music, I'd be more than happy to touch gloves with The Greatest.

This game is the worst game I've ever played and I'm the probably the biggest boxing fan out there. The controls are horrible, I can't stand using the joystick I wish I could use the directional buttons. You can't control body shots and the manual gives NO instructions on how to throw body shots. The career mode is a disaster. Bottom line don't by this game, save your money. Good news, I heard that Mike Tyson's boxing will be better. Cross your fingers.
