It's Good...but...

This simulator is good, providing you only want to ride and deal with a few trains only. It lacks of sense and proper means to build your own lines or to create a train of your own. Also, is very difficult to find out how you can improve or create new trains. I will only recommend this game for starters in the train simulation "business".Otherwise, in my opinion, Trainz Railroad Simulator 2006, from AURAN ,is probably the best in its class.

Having just recently installed this sim on my pc I was very impressed. I have not had much luck with any of Microsoft's games in the past. Their combat flight simulator 3 in my opion is just plain awful compared to great other great flight sims like IL2 forgotton battles.Even their first combat flight sim (which I have) is better. Microsoft games to me for some reason seem to look unfinished. Imagine my suprise when I installed Train simulator! This game is very well done indeed. I am a big fan of Auran's Trainz so I really did not expect to keep this game installed for to long. I was on xmas holiday from work and I was looking for a cheap game to fool around with. I purchased this because it was cheap And I was curious as well. Trainz is more like model railroading, this is more like real railroading.I have since purchased some third party add-ons and this is where this game really shines. The realistic routes and activities are nothing short of fantastic. I still cannot believe I had not tried this train sim before. Whats more ,unlike Aurans Trainz you dont need a high tech pc to run it properly. Of course the more video memory / processor speed you have the better. This sim also has a massive online community supporting it. Sites like train-sim.com are a good start...........If you like trains you cannot afford to let this one pass by. Get onboard!!!!!!!!!!!

This is a great game for all train lovers.

Train Simulator is a great program if you love trains. There are advantages and disadvantages. The program takes up a lot of space on your hard drive, it freezes up once and awhile, and the views are not that great, for instance, when you are in the passenger view you only can look up,down, left and right you cannot look backwards, also if you are in cab you can only look forward and to you left and right and again you cannot look backwards. When you choose snowy conditions the program shuts down and brings you back to your desktop. There are some good things about Train Simulator such that the graphics are very good in quality and the sounds realistic. There is a wide variety of trains from the Acela Express to Dash 9, and there are many different routes such as the Northeast Corridor to the Orient Express. If you are a train lover like me, you will very satisfied with Train Simulator.

I really enjoy playing this one. My son also loves it. We've become big rail fans ( needs more steam engines though).

We found several great websites with free engines and routes (Including a 'Thomas the tank engine' my son plays with)

Great but difficult

This is a really neat train driving game but not for the young. My son is only 7 and this being rated for everyone I thought it would be perfect but it VERY HARD. You have to copy out the manual then try to read and drive. I think its really cute but will require an adult to assit them. It takes several buttons to drive it and several to control it. I was thinking it would just be go and stop but this is more real. All in all very interesting and real feeling but requires the advise of an adult to help. I copied the 90 page manual then put it in plastic sleeves so my son can flip through it. You will need to copy this manual because all the trains drive different and you can't stop the game to keep going back to the manual all the time. I think it's a good buy but be willing to spend some time to learn the tricks of the trade. The train simulator book is useful also and you can buy it right here at Amazon.

Greatest simulator out

I just recieved this in the mail, and I have to say. I wasn't expecting too much from it. But, boy was I wrong. It has everything. Travel all different routes throughout the world with different trains. You can also run a route picking up passengers on the way. Its a lot of fun.

**Warning** if you have an old or unupdated video card, there will be a lot of pauses while playing. So, try to get your video card to optimal performance.

It's a "niche" simulator, for sure.

Driving a train is, admittedly, not as glamorous as jumping in the cockpit of a 747. However, the value in this game comes from the attention to detail. You will probably find this game a real snoozer IF you don't like trains or the idea of driving one. There is just something about notching the throttle forward and then those millions of pounds of steel start to slowly roll down the rail. Then there's the satisfaction of getting your train to the station ON TIME. And, my God, the scenery detail. Just amazing. Again, this is only going to be really interesting to those niche players. Sorry kids, you can't shoot any guns at oncoming trains, cars, or the animals that sometimes appear on the side of the track.

I really like this game. I don't love it (hence the four stars, not five) because the interface is not what I had in mind. Honestly, I'd like to be able to hook up my joystick and throttle for some functionality, but it's all keyboard- or mouse-controlled; nothing else. I had better hopes for performance since your field of motion is limited to forward and back and only some side-to-side. I figured they'd be able to have the great scenery and still be able to get the performance up there considering "flight simulator-type" requirements are not there. However, this is not the case. I have a 600 mhz PIII with 256MB RAM and a 32MB 3d card (Riva TNT2) and I still can't get any better than 9 FPS in complex areas.

Beyond this, though, the scenery really is outstanding. I haven't been on any of these routes personally, but I understand it's all accurately mapped. Not to mention just gorgeous.

I hope that, if you are a train enthusiast or even if you've just been curious about driving trains and how they work, you'll pick up a copy of this fine piece of software.

The bar has been raised

Well after seeing a demo of the game at the National Train Show in San Jose last year, I waited patiently for this game to hit the shelves. I wasn't disappointed.

Train Simulater was easy to load right out of the box even if you are like me and don't read the directions. I found the "quick and dirty" install instructions well written. The full 90 page or so instructions I printed out and read them cover to cover. Not only did Microsoft provide how, what and where but gave everyone the WHY. They even went as far as to include basic railroading terms and a "how things work" that a non-railfan would need to play the sim.

Without going into all the routes there are several activities that the "engineer" can try to accomplish. There are even short tutorials that gives you some "classroom" work before hitting the high iron.

There are a few minor annoyances. One of which was the need to play with the graphics settings within the game. Once I master this (it took about 10 mins to get it the way I wanted to) I didn't have to reset anything and the sim function fine.

Microsoft's system recommendations should be followed, not the bear minimums but the "it will work great if you have this!" instructions.

Microsoft has raised the bar for other train simulator programs, if you didn't feel the hair on the back of your neck stand up with the Dash-9 in dynamic braking...well...check your pulse

Now if Microsoft can just get Union Pacific RR to cooperate and start getting those add-on routes out..

I didn't realize when I bought this game just how old it is. Graphically it's about on par with the original Half-Life. I was hoping for something that looked a little better.

The competitor's version has better game play.

The graphics is great and has a lot of good features. However it seems very boring when I compared to another game that I played.

The other one is made by a Japanese company and only available in the Japanese language and it's called Densha-de GO! The Japanese one is much more challenging and has real life scenarios. It evaluates you with points on how well you do. There's also speed limit which will not go crazy if you go over by just a few KM or so. The controls on MS can be confusing compared to their competitor's.

There are quite a few bugs that I see with the MS version. Even on a Pentim III 733 machine, the game has some delay problem once in awhile. The wipers do not seem to be working until you go outside of the car and see that it's indeed working. The timetable thing is extremely weird. On the competitor one, you would know exactly when you are suppose to depart and arrive. There are times where it's not really clear in the MS version.

I would recommend this game if you have never played other ones before. It's a good start but it's boring. Their compatitor one kept me playing non stop. Where as the MS one makes me fall asleep very quickly.
