Ok, I can say a little more. A lot more actually. Where to start? I still consider LOTR2 to be one of the best games I've ever played. The AI was dumb but it was a super fun game - 5 stars all the way. I've patched and played this one now and would like to point out the following to anyone thinking this is going to be like LOTR2:

1) No documentation! The manual isn't even close to sufficient and online/on cd adds nothing. This will be a recurring theme in my review.
2) Heavy hardware required. I'm running an AMD 2200+ (clock rate ~1800MHz), 512 DDR400, and a Radeon 9700 Pro with latest drivers. I can watch the arrows move frame by frame during sieges with only 2 of their units fighting 3-5 of mine. "Recommended" hardware is 1500MHz and a Radeon 8500. Liars.
3) To upgrade your castle you save money. My money keeps getting stolen after saving for 30 real-world minutes. They take almost all of it and I have no idea how or how to stop them (DOCUMENTATION!!!).
4) You can accidentally downgrade your castle since they present inferior designs as upgrade options, yet still charging you money to do it. There are no descriptions in the game or in the manual describing what different castles are capable of. DOCUMENTATION!!!
5) Hiring mercenaries is a guessing game since the in-game description simply tells you there title, like siege engineer, and says he "does not serve you". No help in manual...getting tired of typing DOCUMENTATION.
6) I accidentally clicked on an ally's territory with my army and was immediately at war, despite being 2 territories away and changing back immediately. Stupid.
7) You can't zoom in or out during battle, which means it's *very* hard to tell which troops you are facing. The graphics are not that good despite being so hardware intensive.
8) During a siege I decided to go around to the castle's back wall since the defenders were all ammassed on the front walls. The defenders did not re-position themselves to meet me. Even worse, Once I climbed the walls my guys just kind of milled about, ocassionally doing something I ordered them to...kinda. Even worser (new word), once I was finally inside the courtyard, I could not target the defenders! So I just sat there gaping while my guys stood right next to the defenders who had about 3 archers and killed all my guys. I tried this a few times with the same results.
9) You can't conquer outlying territories and annex them anymore. You can devastate them, but you have to conquer the main castle, at which time you get all of the territories. This took a huge element of the game away for me.
10) As previous reviewers noted, all micro-management is gone. You drop a merchant on to a piece of land and never come back. Same with a peasant for food. No control, no fun. Maybe there are more options but there is no DOCUMENTATION!!!
11) Attacking an army on the field is lame. If you set up two units to attack one unit from different angles, both your units just bee-line right for the center of the enemy unit anyway. Not anything like the cool tricks you could play with the Total War series. No usage of terrain or weather or anything.

I work at a telco, I understand what tough times mean to a company but this is ridiculous. Sierra has fleeced me and I'm angry.

I'm an optimist

Since Lords 2 Royal Collection with Siege Pack is one of my all time favorite computer games I have always had high hopes for Lords 3. I placed my advance order in April 2003. On March 7, 2004 I was delighted to discover that it is finally going to come out March 16 for only $20.00. However, when I checked the Sierra website to see what they had to say I discovered that the stated minimum system requirements are Pentium III with 800 MHZ and they recommend a Pentium IV with 1.5 GHZ. Since this exceeds the capabilities of my computer system and I have no plans to update soon I am forced to regretably cancel my order. I gave it 4 stars anyway out of gratitude for Lords 2 and because I want it to be a successful game. I'm an optimist.

dont juge it

Like others who have written, I'm a big fan of Lords2 and eagerly await the sequel. But I am NOT pleased to see it as RTS. Not only that, but I was a big fan of Master of Orion 2 and eagerly awaited a much delayed sequel. What a dissapointment!!!! So I will reserve judgement and read reviews here and elsewhere before I rush out and buy. I hope for much but am prepared for a big letdown.

IM HOPING FOR THE BEST!

I own every single "Lords" game I, II, and siege pack. I also own Pharaoh which is also an excellent game. I play Lords of the Realm II Siege Pack every week and the sequal has to be much better (I have been waiting half of my life for it :p).

If this game is anything close to what I expect it to be it will be a huge hit in all stores and never be on shelves for more than a day. Also Lords of the Realm II Siege Pack (expansion for Lords II) Is THE best game for computer I have ever played, second total....... nothing beats Vice City (Grand Theft Auto),
well.............I hope this article helps someone find a good gift for their child or themselves. If you buy this game, believe me there will be no regrets, well back to playin Pharaoh(4th fav. game).

P.S. If you ever see a game that says sierra on the box, its worth it.

Hopeful with concerns.

I usually buy about two video games a year for my PC. I have to say Lords of the Realm II is still my favorite (I bought it in 1997). I only had two problems: one, it was too easy because the computer opponents did not fight very hard; and two, the graphics and storyline were not that interesting. I hope Lords III deals with these issues instead of revamping the entire game, or creating junk like Lords of Magic.

So far so good

Graphics are nice. No freezing or bugs as of yet. Running XP. I was bit aprehensive ordering on the 2nd day out but still giving it a fair shake. Love the formation troop control and individual battles. Strategic level really isn't that different from Lord's II. Still learning the subtleties of the game and will be going head to head with another buddy soon to test multiplayer. Heck ... its worth the $20 bucks to learn and play.

I think this game is better than some opinions mentioned

Hey, I love this game, multiplayer is cool...thats the best part of it and makes ya think when ya face real humans.

The Vassel System brings depth to the game, but in away takes away slightly. But, cool thing is theres between 2,000-2,500 vassels in the game itself...with certain strenghts and weaknesses.

The only negative is the interface...makes the game harder than it really is...its the stratigic interface thats hard, but once ya learn it your fine. So yes there is learning curves as well...

Battle interface is great...huge improvement over lords 2...

Sieges graphicly are good, but interface gets alittle clumsy there...when your men get in there castle gets kind of messy.

All I can say is take the time to learn the game and you'll love it, at first glance you might not like it, but once you get to play more and more as well as with multiplayer you'll love the game.

mediocre

Hey, for $20 what do you expect? The game is OK, but not great. I liked the graphics and the GUI, and the game is still fun to play. I have 2 problems with it, though. Firstly, they took out too much of the management side of the game - this version is really all about the warfare side of the game. Secondly, it crashes my system constantly. Very buggy.

i love LOR and LORII !!!!

man the only thing that sucks about this game is the time it took those guys to release the game!!!! this game is a kind of like the Total war series, except, this game is much more deep in the management part of the game...in other words, this isn't a game where you just build an army then pummel the other guy n2 pulp.....superb graphics from what ive seen, and a great buy because of its replayability! as i said before, the only thing that is bad, is the wait i had to endure for the game to be released!
