some kind of sick joke?

(this is my review after playing the 360 version and then trying the demo). lost planet is a pretty good game on 360, and while its fun factor can be argued, it's graphical quality cannot. it looks spectacular, and offers a couple of new innovations in gaming that give a breath of fresh air from all the mediocre FPS's.

first of all, let me blow this idea out of the water right now, that playing this game with a mouse and keyboard is more fun. IT'S NOT. it's less fun. i'm a PC gamer and agree that MOST games are more fun with mouse and keyboard. not this one.

second, the graphics looked crappy on my PC, but it's not new or anything. however, it should look better considering the great graphics i get on games like company of heroes and world of warcraft. my FPS was way too low for these kind of graphics. it's very "non-optimized" for PC. it almost seems like an advertisement to buy a new windows vista PC so it will run better! it started out the game in some ridiculously low resolution i didn't even know existed. i have an old monitor and play in 800 x 600, but who uses any less than that?!?! apparently the creators didn't know much about PC gaming.

the port of this game from console to PC was not done well. even in gamespot's full review, they mention how the controls aren't shown on-screen for the PC.. in other words it will say "to enter, press A" or "press B" like the console version, so you have to enter the menu to find which keys to press. are you freakin' kidding me?! the PC is a huge market, and THIS is the amount of respect they give PC gamers?! on one hand, it's kind of a good thing for console games to come to PC, to give people without a 360 a chance to play. however, they should put a little more work into it! some people are worried that the 360-microsoft connection will be the end of good PC gaming, and this game just worries me more. usually games port from PC to console.. and while i would love to be able to play a few games on PC like ninja gaiden, the fact is a lot of innovation happens on PC games, and we don't want to see the end of that by rich lazy microsoft just making games for the 360 and porting them to PC in substandard fashion because it's better for business. maybe they will get better about this over time, but after playing the 360 version, i'd say try this one before you buy it!

Visually Stunning DirectX 10 game

I completely disagree with the review above. So much so, I actually bothered to write this.
His points have nothing to do with this game.
1: The controls have been designed to support the Xbox 360 pad, So theres no setting up controls in the begining. Great for people who just want to get stuck in. This is also a port of a console game so the pads great (just like halo)
2: As for the game running at a slow frame rate, and the need to run with settings down. This is purply based on the PC.
I have a 8800GTX and it runs like a dream. I would even go as far to say that it might be the best next gen game ive seen to date.
(Im running Vista - DirectX10) along with the new graphics card, so I don't know what lower spec systems, directx9 etc look like.

Most of the time ports look alittle worse than the original console game release years ago. This is a great port (I believe Nvidia and Capcom worked togther to make sure it was a good port).

U might want to reconsider buying if u have the lower spec as im sure it wont look and run like the 360 version. It is dedicated gaming hardware after all.

I've only started to play the game so I gave it 4 overall. Im judging this on the fact that console games of this type can get repetitive quite quickley an I'm more of a Half-Life nut.
I don't care though at the moment about the game play, im just drooling over the graphics.

Amazing game; requires amazing hardware.

Upon downloading the Lost Planet demo, I was quickly in love with the simple, fluid gameplay and the beautiful graphics. I have not been so immediately enamored by a game in as long as I can remember. It plays like something I could imagine being on the n64 or ps1-- and I mean that in a good way-- updated to the year 2007.

I ordered it from Amazon, and booted it up to find the full version even better than the demo. A previous reviewer remarked that the game only shows the 360 version controls ("press a" etc). This is the case with the demo version, but on the full version both the keyboard keys and gamepad buttons are displayed ("press e/(a)").

On an 8800 GTS, this game runs beautifully. The FPS stay near 50 with almost everything on high (only 4x AA, 1152 x 864) with no serious drops. In Oblivion, for example, my FPS ranged from the 70s to the 20s, and the stability Lost Planet offers is much appreciated; this game was very well ported. Moreover, I have both a 360 controller and a keyboard, and I find the game fun using either.

The single player is the best I've played in ages. The absolute best. Levels are all varied, with different scenery and enemies. Figuring out the most efficient way to defeat an enemy-- or having fun doing it inefficiently-- is amazing. The boss battles are excellent-- all are very distinct and interesting-- and the giant Akrid are very well modeled.

The games plot initially seemed like its weakest aspect, but I grew more interested towards the end. I found the cut-scenes and plot more than enjoyable enough and the story good. The surrounding game is just a lot to live up to. Nonetheless, I play Lost Planet's campaign to have fun playing, not to force myself to the end of a story (unlike most games in recent history).

The multiplayer is very fun, although many people have problems connecting (including myself, initially). You can gain levels by earning points for your team, which will unlock new avatars for you to play as. It is also a vastly different experience from many other games. Throughout the maps are Data posts, which when enabled give your team point, and allow you to see any nearby enemies on your map.

This game is a must-own if you have awesome hardware begging to show off, or a desire to play a shooter less serious (but more fun?) than its peers. It comes with a free (20$ value) one year subscription to Games for Windows magazine, which sweetens the deal even more. Great game, highly recommended.

A very fun game!!!

This product has been met with mixed reviews, but never fear - It's a lot of fun. While there is nothing revolutionary about the game, it is full of fast paced action and excellent graphics. There are a lot of "bosses" in the game and they are require a different strategy. The graphics are some of the best to date, even if you don't have DirectX 10. Beware!! It doesn't run well on lower end hardware. If you don't have a fairly quick graphics card (Nvidia 7600GT/ATI X1800 or above) it's unlikely you will be happy.

Cinematic game play!

This game begins like a movie, and then you are thrust right into combat.
As you advance you will be given tips on the control scheme. The story moves along slowly at first as you try to uncover the mysteries of the past. The enemies are sort of easy, but the bosses are very tough.
I recommend this game to any who want a cinematic adventure.

Buy it new

I tried the demo but couldn't get it to install on my pc. I got a copy from my local library to try the full version. You cannot install it until you set up a steam account online. Plus this had been borrowed before. Only one person can have an account associted with a product key. Do not buy a used copy buy a new one or you will have a useless copy. I already contacted steam and they said they could not reset the keys. Buyer Beware. Buy new. I look forward to playing this game. I like what I've seen but not sure if it will be a PC version or get a 360 and its version.

A Baby Step into the Future

This is quite a pleasant surprise, as games go. Given Capcom's reputation for action/arcade style gaming, they've done something more than I'd expected. Lost Planet offers something I haven't seen before: a first-person shooter that would actually work well with a gamepad.
Usually for us PC gamers, it's strictly mouse and keyboard. Well, you can do that with Lost Planet and the game will play just fine, but if you're in third-person perspective, any gamepad will do a good job for you, too.
Now, about the future: I played this game on a Vista Ultimate machine (WEI 5.6). You can choose DX9 or 10 versions, but of course I went for 10. In the options, the only DX10-specific feature I can identify is "Fur Effects". Since you're humans going up against bugs, the only fur I've seen thus far has been sewn into the good guys' hoods.
Gameplay is an interesting mechanic: because you need thermal energy to keep from freezing to death, the stakes are raised, and you spend some time trying to balance the need to clear the place of hostiles, with the desperate need to collect the heat charges before they're frozen away. You spend some time in and out of mechanoid machines, stomping around and shooting things with minigus. The neat part is, you can detach the a minigun and go lugging it on foot, or if you find an extra mech-sized weapon, you can bolt it onto the mech.
The only downside I can see thus far is that if you crank the effects up too high, outdoor scenes are near-impossible. This isn't due to a flaw in gameplay; it is simply that you are in literally blinding blizzard conditions. Snow billows everywhere, wind buffets white clouds of it this way and that, and it all makes for shivering good fun when bugs seem to come out of nowhere and drop on you from above. Cutscenes can also run a bit long, with Final-Fantasy styled characters who have more personality in their voices than they do in their mannequin expressions.
All in all, this is fun to play, and an interesting look at where games are going, technologically.

Great game!

This story it's quiet fun!
The graphics are outstanding and the characters are good enough!
The game itself it's pretty linear, but i didn't got bored of it, the VS's are incredibly fun to use, and gives a great sense of power to the character.
Even tho I had some technical issue running it (my pc literally melt down, I had to buy a new power supply), I loved it. One issue it's that it's Steam dependent, I have nothing against Steam, actually it's pretty cool, but it makes the installation take forever!

I have a monitor that goes up to 1680 x 1050, and I jacked up all the settings to high, overclocked my visiontek ati radeon 3870 512 MB GDDR4 and my amd64 phenom 9600 2.3mhz to 2.7mhz. and it runs beautifully! playstation 3/xbox 360 high definition gorgeousness, and it responds well to a logitech controller I purchased. The game has great replay value when you just wanna hop in a game and just wanna splatter some alien guts. lol

Lost Planet got a little lost.... Its hit or miss, too bad, great potential

I'm dumb enough to buy all the DirectX 10 titles, I have no idea why. Some are just really good games and look nice (Bioshock, Hellgate), some are severely overrated (Crysis), and some are just plain dumb (Lost Planet).

This was a serious console game, that went seriously awry on its way to the PC. Its actually the complete XBox 360 version ported to Windows. And man is is painful to play.

Good points are the visuals are terrific. The frozen world, the physics of gameplay, are all top notch. Not COD4 or Bioshock great, but nice nonetheless. The snowing, some of the character animation, the scenery all rate highly. The goofy mech warrior clones that you can ride around in are decent, as are some of the weapons (my favorite is the shotgun that hangs off the robots, its one of the most kick butt weapons I've ever seen).

But the gameplay just destroys ANY goodness this game may have. It is dreadfully slow, there is NO SAVE SYSTEM, which means you have to repeat the same checkpoints 1000 times. And, there are lots of "boss" battles, which I personally, find to be massively time consuming and annoying in general. And in Lost Planet they are even more annoying, as the "secret" to killing the bosses are always some ridiculous thing that takes 1000 plays to figure out.

And then there is the "waddya do?" problem. You know, where you wander around aimlessly for a long time, unable to figure out how to advance to the next checkpoint or cutscene. There is no navigational assistance, no direction pointers per se (there's a weak map, but it gives no info), and you can walk around for hours trying to figure out what to do. What a waste of time.

As many have pointed out, the story is weak, but serviceable. I can live with it. The characters are all video game cliche, large busted women, extremely handsome and pretty young men, all accompanied by cheesy voice acting in the badness scale of the all time winner of bad voice acting, Uber Soldier.

All in all, this is a somewhat weak product for the PC. What makes it sad, is that it was SO CLOSE to being really good. The studio that built it clearly has talent in the art department, just not in the game dynamics department. The slowness of movement, the mysterious and annoying "boss battles", the lack of a save system totally kill the gameplay for me. I can take all the other things, even the simple XBox 360 interface is workable (just dopey for a PC port). But the horrid gameplay kills it. Oh well, another waste of money
