The World is NOT Yours Afterall...

"Scarface" showed a lot of promise, especially after "The Godfather" hit videogame platforms and ended up being a great success, IMHO. I was in love with that game because of the new storyline that involves you more with the movie, and that you could do a lot of freelancing, just like the "GTA" games. You didn't have to do missions right away, or even at all.

A big buzz came about when we learned that "Scarface" was going to come out. I was hoping that the game would offer the same type of freedom that the other games do... boy, was I ever mistaken. The game is strictly mission-based, and if you try to do things other than the mission at hand, you fail and have to restart.

First thing's first, the premise of the game is that it starts where the movie ends, only you don't end up dying. You, as "Tony Montana" escape and plot your way back to the top and ultimately take revenge upon the one who tried to wipe you out for good... Sosa. It won't be an easy road, though. You'll have to start from the beginning and work your way back to the top.

I know that people weren't too thrilled with the idea that it's different from the movie and you end up surviving instead of dying, but I actually thought that was a pretty neat idea. However, the reason why this game fails is that you are not given the freedom you'd think you would be able to have. The game is strictly about missions, and ridiculously hard missions where there are a million bad guys shooting at you all at once. You try to move away from the mission and do your own thing, you fail. You have to play it by the book, and that really is a bummer. The controls aren't all that grand, either. Very shaky at times and hard to get a good shot off.

If you want to check this game out, I HIGHLY recommend that you rent it first. Don't waste your money. Rent it and see if you end up liking it. "Scarface" is a game that could have been so much more. Sure, not all games can be "GTA," but I was hoping that they'd at least give you some freelancing options just like in "The Godfather"--which is an EXCELLENT game. It'd make sense, since you have to re-build your empire and gain your rep back, so naturally I thought that you would be able to do some of that on your own terms. I was very disappointed and feel like my money and time was wasted. But, rent the game and see it for yourself. You may end up liking it more than I did. I'm just giving you my take on it. Seriously, RENT this one. Buy it later if you end up really loving it. -Michael Crane

This is a great game with a great storyline. The question arose about the story being gofy and that you start off at the end of the movie, that it was retarded. Well...let me say this, would it help that if they did do the game like that were you had to work your way all the way up to the top..you died. Would you really play a game where it was based off the exact movie, and you played the sotryline and knew how it ended. You know, why would anyone play the game if it had been like that. They'd just stop and watch the movie, and be like 'okay I beat te game, time to trade it in.' No, but seriously grow up and buy this gae, you wont be sorry at ALL! The story is fantastic and the graphics are okay, but it's TONY freaking MONTANA! What other game lets you be Tony Montana? Vice City tried and overcame the T.M. style of character but this is the real deal Tony Montana. Buy it, you wont be disappointed.

i bought it the night it was released for the ps2, and played it for a little bit. i think it's awesome. the voice acting is VERY well done. whoever said it isn't even close, it really is. scarface is one of my favorite movies, so i am critical of the game and expected a lot. i am most definitely not let down by it. it's so violent and vulgar, that i find it funny. i never would have expected video games to reach this point, so it's very entertaining. the violence is comparable to the punisher game, you'll know what i mean if you had it. i'll just say that you can shoot peoples' heads clean off their bodies. almost every other word is f**k, which is just like tony in the movie. also, you can taunt anybody in the world, which will always carry some "dirty" language. taunting will help build your balls meter, which eventually leads to blind-rage mode. in addition, you can have conversations with anybody in the world, not just one-liners. i haven't run into any repeated conversations after about 2 hours of play. i'm sure it'll occur at some point, but not yet.

the graphics and animations are a lot better than vc (vice city), and the storyline is more flowing than any of the gta games. there are a bunch of celebrities who collaborated for this game to do voice-overs, and there is a ton of 80's music. you can choose to play music during gameplay, which is cool. it's kind of like a soundtrack, and makes the experience more like a movie. you don't have to have music playing at all times, but the option is there by pushing the select button.

when you deal drugs or intimidate people, you have to time your button press on a meter just right in order to make your attempt more successful. i like this system, as it's a stray away from the cpu automatically choosing the outcome of the event. the world is free-roam, but you can't kill anybody you want to. some may not like this feature, but it stays true to the tony montana character. i tried shooting a woman walking down the street, and tony's character says, "no, i'm above that." that's exactly how the character in the movie would treat the situation. one great aspect about scarface's free-roam feature is that you can go into buildings without any load times. remember how every building in gta games had to be loaded when you walked in and out of them? not here, it's all seamless.

to conclude my review after a couple of hours of play, i must say that it's a great game. again, i am critical of the game because i liked the movie so much, and i am critical of all items i purchase. scarface:the world is yours delivers a very high entertainment value, and guarantees a lot of fun for anyone who plays it. the game is definitely not for children, as it's a VERY adult guided theme. if you enjoyed any of the gta games at all, you'll love this one. in my opinion, it is better than any of the gta games. everything gta tried and may have failed on, scarface does well. plus, remember, scarface was the inspiration for the gta games. this game is the master of the genre.

Cool game but way too much foul language

I have been playing this game for a few days now and i've got to say that they went way way overboard with the use of the "f" word. I am a GTA fan and I understand their is going to be some foul language in games of that type, but gee whiz! This game takes it to a new level with the use of the "f" word being used in my opinion, 100 times that of GTA. They need like a language filter or something on games that way those of us to enjoy openworld games can play them and have fun w/o hearing all the frequent profanities. So bluntly put, the language in this game is horrible! If they would have did it along the lines of GTA it would have been more tolerable, even though not good still to even have profanity in a game. Games can be a blast w/o all that mess. So have got that out of the way, the gameplay is a blast! Vehicle physics are kind of rough though and not as smooth as GTA i.e. the driving of the cars and boats. The graphics are pretty good too. I love the mansion. That is cool. They have really neat cars and boats as well. I like the fact too that you can hire your own henchmen and driver. You can call a car from your garage from anywhere and your driver will bring it to you in a matter of seconds..same goes for your boats if you are in a boathouse location. There may be other locations to call boats from but I haven't discovered it yet. In the game, you buy property, do deals, take down enemy gangs, etc on your way back to the top to claim your empire. Overall, language not included, this game is fun. But if I would have known then, what I know now, I would have just stuck with GTA and would have went out and bought D1 drift racing instead. Considering the language just makes this game a chore to enjoy without wanting to bring it back and trade it in. My wife could hear me playing the game from the other room and even she was disgusted and admitted that even GTA is better than this game. So being the GTA fan that I am, I just can't really recommend this game to anyone. Parents be forewarned. This game is rated mature for a reason so please do not buy this game for your children thinking the rating is nothing but a label. This title earns a capital "M".

Great Game!!!

I bought my game when it first came out. I was hoping that the game wouldn't be another GTA rip off, and in soem parts it may come out like that, but when you play through the game itself you realize that it has a different feel to it. It was pretty amazing ruight off the back. some of the controls can get thrown at you real quickly but it will get easier with practice. You can't rush into the game though. Take your time and learn the controls. As for missions, it may take a little while to get one but they are worth it.

There really isn't much of free range in the game, but remember that its Scarface. You are taking the proper steps to get to the top again.
The language is rough, but rememebr the movie?

Looking for a good action game? Try Scarface. Its a good one.

really good game

Good: The graphics. The soundtrack. The mission design. The story and scripting.

Great: the animation of the Montana sprite. The voice acting. The humor. The depth. The strategy and role playing elements. The controls, both in the vehicles and out. The options.

Bad: no air vehicles or motorcycles. Mission progression is too linear and sometimes repetitive side missions are required to advance. Too many ananchronisms in the soundtrack and in the slang and fashion of the non player characters detract from the authenticity of the atmosphere (in other words, there shouldn't be any of this hip-hop junk going on in the eighties, though of course demographics would have made the temptation irresistable from a marketing standpoint). And the game is unoriginal; this is Grand Theft Also: Vice City, Scarface Edition.

Bottom line: not without its flaws, but overall the best urban crime game or open world game yet made. Takes all the elements that work in such games and adds enough new elements that it can now be considered the definitive game in the genre. Will very predictably be attacked by a certain type of game reviewer, and the less said about that type, the better. If you are over 18 and own a Playstation 2, and have the least interest in the genre, you owe it to yourself to add Scarface to your collection, no rentals, no questions asked, automatic must-buy. This might be the last great game of this generation, at least until God of War 2 comes out...

A great continuation of the film...

...well if you are a fan of the movie this is a no-brainer, you must get this game. The game picks up where the movie left off. At the end of the movie Tony gets shot from the back by one of Sozza'z hitmen and meets his demise. In the game you see the hitman coming towards you and you get to introduce him to your "lil' friend." From there the story begins. You have to start all the way from the bottom and work your way back to the top so you can find and destroy Sozza. If you like the GTA games this is pretty much the same style, except it controls much much better. You have to complete missions and make deals, buy properties, gain respect. I like the balls meter in which once it is filled you go on a rampage destroying everyone near your path. This game has great voice actiong from many of the old characters from the original, as well as new voices. Be warned though, this game is not for young children as it is extremely violent, and contains mature content. Definetely a worthy addition to any mature gamers library.

The best

This game is truly worth the wait. It really makes you feel like you are creating a drug empire and it is incredibly addicting. The gameplay is awesome the shooting mechanics work great much better than any of the GTA games. This is one of the funnest games to shoot people in and the chainsaw is really awesome. This probally the funnest open world game i have ever played to drive in. The cars handle great and are a blast to drive. The graphics look great and the particle effects are truly awesome. This is a must get game.
