Bioshock is the best game in 8 years

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 15 / 23

Since System Shock 2 came out in 1999, I've seen plenty of decent games. Games that looked good, played good, and were pretty cool...

Bioshock puts them all to shame.

If you would like to enter a world where amazing things happen, where you won't get bored for a minute, and where you get everything that you ever wanted out of a game, this is it folks.

I bought it, and I'm loving life. I'm actually excited to go home and play it!

Windows Vista is poison for this game

I got this game and was unable to run it because of Windows Vista. The sound was choppy and full of static, although they list Vista as a supported OS. Forget it.

basically you are renting this for $50

2 installs means no reformatting no installing it on your future computers i think 360 owners should go with that version as i have both but have yet to install this on my pc i will play the 360 version because i feel like i actually own what i paid for and the 2 stars is for each install if i ever bother

Brilliantly Awful

.

It's not very often that the word 'brilliant' comes to mind when I see video clips of upcoming games, but this one had me wanting it after the first few frames.

Long story short - after reading quite a few negative reviews regarding incompatibility with some well known respected video card manufacturers, I decided to try the demo first. I've had my pocket burned by a few dud games recently, so it seemed the best thing to do.

This game simply refuses to run correctly with standard video drivers. I use a very nice/fast ATI card - NOTHING yet has slowed it down, even when set at maximum quality/resolution (Half-Life 2 at max settings gives me 150 FPS at least). Here's the sour part - it seems that to run this game, I need to download 'special' ATI drivers that have been made specially for this game! What!? Let's get this right: I have to use specially bastardised drivers to run this game? How about designing a game that runs on all the major vid cards instead!!!?

Anyway, you may not be too surprised to learn that even after trying everything that was advised to run this - it didn't. Just a screen-full of strange graphics blocks with sound.

Of course, I fully expect others to send in reviews stating that it worked on their ATI card just fine. Well, they will either just be lucky that the special drivers for this game work with their particular ATI card, or, they are employees of the company behind it 'upping' the game (if you view the reviews in chronological order, note that the first 6 reviews give 5 stars for Fun & Overall ratings. Mmmmm?).

Due to an increasing number of games demanding sometimes significant upgrades or unreasonable changes in configuration, I'm seriously thinking of buying consoles. There, I've said it. For years now I've resisted going to the Dark Side, but now that keyboards and mice can easily be added to consoles for game control, I see no other way-out from this madness from recent PC game releases that fail to deliver.

If you're lucky enough to have this run properly, the game does look fantastic to play. You lucky people!

What on Earth is happening to PC Gaming!?

A good game, but not worth the software protection-related issues.

Well, I had played through part of the game, and I'm still in the process of completing it. Overall I've enjoyed it, and sometimes dreaded playing it. Its exhausting game play where you are always on edge, there is no up or down, always looking over your back. In that sense the game is brilliant. The graphics are amazing, the options provided to you in the game are entertaining and the overall action is fast pace... one of the most unique and original games I have ever played (except for maybe the Fallout series).

But, after not having trouble installing or playing the game, I started reading about some of the software protection issues that came with it. The more I read the more troubled I became. I dislike the fact that it had limited number of installation, I still play 10 year old games at times when I feel nostalgic for them. In my opinion, this automatically removes this game from ever becoming a classic. It felt to me as if this was directed not at the hackers and the freeloaders, but the consumer who paid good money to play. Why am I practically "leasing" a game that I paid 55 (with tax) for? There was no mention on the box for any of this, including the different hidden and intrusive files and folders that I don't even know how to access or remove or even where they're located... or even if I will ever be able to remove them... or if they will do anything harmful to my computer.

Bottom line, I shouldn't have this uneasy feeling about something that I paid money to enjoy. Giving them one star is the only way I know to protest a company that mismanaged a good game.

Rerun if System Shock 2 with new graphics and Rootkits

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 9 / 11

I have bought, installed, played, beaten and uninstalled Bioshock.

The graphics, music and story were impressive.

However, the gameplay is identical to the game System Shock 2. Identical except for the fact that it is more simplistic and dumbed down, which I suspect is a side effect of this game being developed for the Xbox crowd rather than for PC gamers alone. This does not mean it is a bad game, only that it does not live up to much of the hype which has been reported about it.

If that alone was my sole complaint about the game I would probably still give it four out of five stars but after reading the review by NeuroSplicer where he warns us about secret rootkits and other hidden security mesures which are installed onto your system along with the game I have no real choice but to lower my overall rating of the game. I have seen these rootkits for myself and they are now installed on my own computer. I cannot remove them even though I have already uninstalled Bioshock and have no intention of ever playing it again.

I've been suspicious about 2K games ever since they broke away from Sega and it appears that they have adopted many of the bad habbits of their former masters. Beware any future products released by 2K games!

DRM Makes Bioshock Broken By Design

1 Rating: 1, Useful: 12 / 18

I want to love Bioshock, I really do. I've heard such high praise for it, and enjoyed System Shock II, that buying it would be a no-brainer.

...if it weren't for the DRM.

DRM: Digital Rights Management. Basically, DRM is anything within the program itself that prevents you from using it however you want. The manufacturers love it, because it (theoretically) cuts down on piracy and won't affect legit users. The reality is that pirates will ALWAYS find a way to break the security, so the only users that ever suffer -are- the legit customers.

The PC version requires activation, so if you don't have an internet connection, you can't play it. To add insult to injury, the activation servers weren't ready on the day the game was released. Also, you are only allowed to install it on five different computers. Supposedly uninstalling the game will give you back one of those slots, but if your whole system goes belly-up and you have to reinstall Windows from scratch... tough luck. I even considered buying it online via Steam, but the downloaded version contains the same SecuROM DRM!!! A big selling point for Steam is that you (and only you) can have access to all of your games on any computer, thanks to your personal account.

With the potential for modding, I want the PC version rather than for the XBox 360. As it stands, I will not buy this game until the DRM is removed.

[An argument for DRM not being necessary, you can order a boxed copy of Galactic Civilizations II from Stardock's website, and while you're waiting for the box, Stardock has a program like Steam that allows you to download the game as well. One CD key, no DRM, no problem. I paid a few dollars extra to buy it directly from the company, in a show of support for their principle of putting the customer first. Other companies could learn something from them.]

play the demo first

Considering the fact that price for this item is pretty high and it needs an advanced machine to run properly; I would suggest you to download and play the free demo first and if you liked it then purchase it; Thanks

Graphics good, DRM baaad.

The DRM software this game installs on your hard drive actually disabled another paid-for entirely legal game on my hard drive. (silent storm - sentinels)

I contacted securom about the problem, and they actually sent me an updated file (ar.exe) that was supposed to fix the problem. To make a long story short, the game is still broken.

I have to say, the graphics and environment they created in Bioshock is good, so if thats what you're into go for it. But the game is waaayyy too short. And just be sure to check and see if the rest of your installed games will still run after you install it.

Seriously.

GRATE GAME BUT NEEDS A TOP OF THE LINE GRAPHIC CARD

The game is excelent.
But it requires a top ot the line video card, and most of the
normal video cards wont work. You should be aware of this.
