Beatiful game but not challenging enough

2 Rating: 2, Useful: 0 / 3

I got this game for my new PS3. Let me tell ya, it blows Xbox out of the water. There is no comparison between the 360 and the PS3 other than price of games. Not only does this game look great, but it's really fun to play. I don't know what all the fuss was over the combos and "button mashing" It's the type of game where button mashing can get you through it so many people do it.

I think that's fine for normal or easy, but since this game only has one difficulty mode. While it's really fun to kill all of these bad guys, I wanted more! I didn't die ONCE in this game or even come close to dying!

That upsets me that such a wonderfully done game (and I mean it is designed perfectly from the guided cinematic action sequences to the sixaxis ballistic controls)is so unforgivably easy. Once I learned the combos, I just ruined every bad guy. I don't mean to brag. I don't fancy myself as the Jesus of fighting games, but I am pretty good... also the bad guys would telegraph their intentions so I would have time to react to the one attacking and know what attack that he was doing to me. That made it WAAAYYYY too easy to counter and kill! There should be a mode in which the player doesn't know from which way the attack is coming or what type of attack it is (quick, power, normal).

I think that most people are complaining about the length of game play due to the lack of difficulty of the game. If only there were stronger and smarter enemies to slay...

So to conclude, I only gave this game a bad review because it was too easy. Definitely recommend this game if you have a PS3, but if you're a competent gamer, you won't have any problems with it and would be better off renting it for the weekend.

I Think I'm In Love!

Holy moly! Nariko is perhaps the most stunning heroine I've ever seen in a game. Is it possible to fall in love with a virtual creature? She is truly beautiful, and those glimpses of her tush certainly are enjoyable. However, Nariko isn't the only thing worth looking at in this game. The environments are sweeping and astounding. The music adds to the drama of an already engrossing story. The fighting and action are truly top notch. I've never been much for fighting games, but this is truly a fantastic game.

At first, I found myself captivated by Nariko's beauty and body. I had to get over that quickly since the enemy soldiers started attacking in droves. The moves Nariko is capable of are truly acrobatic and fun to watch. Initially, I was simply mashing the buttons. As time went on I familiarized myself with the several combos that become available, which only heightened the combat experience. I really enjoyed the camera angles as it followed the action. It never seemed to detract from the gameplay, but rather, it created a much more cinematic feel than most games I play.

The after touch feature was a lot of fun. How often do you get to guide cannon balls and arrows in flight? I've never experienced that before in a game, so that seemed pretty novel to me. I also enjoyed doing it via the sixaxis controller. Again, it added an entirely new dimension to the gameplay (tilting the controller to alter the objects trajectory, awesome).

Heavenly Sword definitely shows what the PS3 is capable of. It also shows how top notch production can add to the cinematic quality of a game. The textures and rendering are as good as anything out there. The voice acting is some of the best, and the cut scenes are probably the best I've ever seen.

I hope I can get over the fact that Nariko is only virtual. She embodies pretty much everything you could want in a woman (just don't tell my wife).

Short and Sweet!!!

Before I start I want to note that this game is a 5/5 on fun factor, and that I had not noticed I rated it four instead of five. Now, on to the review.

Great things can come in small packages, or in this case small games. Heavenly Sword is not one of those games that will play for 20+ hours. Honestly you can finish it in one sitting. However, it will be one enjoyable ride from start to finish. The game gives you the feel of playing a movie. It has great acting, beautiful in-game graphics and cut-scenes, and a fighting system that makes it stand out. The game will start off slow and then pick up momentum. Some of the character lines in the game seem a bit out of place and the story does feel short However, the story does suck you in, which explains why you'll find yourself finishing the very moment you start playing it. Hope this is not a spoiler, but the last boss fight is challenging (compared to the other bosses). The combat system is simple to grasp and satisfying to employ. Some people complain about it not having a block button or forcing the sixaxis on you but I say it makes it challenging and even more enjoyable. The block works on you guessing which stance you need to counter the enemies' attack. In other words, if you anticipate your enemy's attack and go into the appropriate stance while facing the enemy you will block and/or counter the attack. The counters are awesome and well animated. As for the sixaxis motion, it can be turned of. And even on it is so easy to use that I wonder why people are having trouble. All you do is slightly tilt or jerk, the latter happens if you are into the action, the controller up to engage the aerial attacks and move the controller up/down, left/right to navigate the arrows when using Kai. But if you don't like this you can turn it off and hit up on the D-pad to engage aerial attacks with Nariko and use the D-pad to navigate the arrows. Anyway, if you own a PS3 or plan to own one soon, and love action games, then you should buy this game. The game is short enough to not feel overly repetitive and makes it easy to replay over and over again. The reason it is not a five is not because it is short but because it doesn't have a lot of compelling extras. A lot of what you unlock, with the exception of the game cut-scenes and art work, can be downloaded from the PSN store. There are no alternate costumes, or a mission mode, or survival mode. But with the magic of downloadable content this may change in the near future (or at least I hope).

Short but lovely

OK, it is very short, and does not provide as much gamplay as other games in its genre, such as God of War or Devil May Cry. However, every aspect of it is extraordinarily well crafted, from the character design, to the acting, to the gameplay. I think that the cut scenes offer the most convincing digital characters that I've yet seen in a game. In particular, Andy Serkis manages to give the Raven King a bit more depth than the usual fantasy game Dark Lord, and Kai is also a wonderful character. The gameplay is a lot of fun, with an excellent balance between Nariko's hack/slashing and Kai's running and sniping. Both characters are great fun to play, and the "aftertouch" system, in which you use the PS3's motion-sensitive controller to "fly" projectiles directly to their target, works extraordinarily well, although I was less impressed by the other use of motion-sensing, in which you have to jerk the controller to initiate an air combo. There are a few nice bits in which you have to hit particular buttons or joystick moves as they flash onto the screen in order to complete a complex sequence of actions, although I did not think that this mechanism was used as well as in God of War. Despite the beauty of the game, there are some indications that the developers faced performance problems implementing it on the PS3. While Nariko's fighting moves seem very well conceived, she looks a bit "framey" in action; I'm not sure what would be needed to make it look better--perhaps motion blur or a faster frame rate. There are also some odd problems with flickering shadows, although the lighting overall is very impressive.

As a short, expensive game, it is a prime candidate for a rental. Nevertheless, it is enough fun to play, and there is enough depth to Nariko's fighting techniques, that I expect to play it again, so I'm not sorry that I bought it.

Beautiful Game, no replay value

This is the first game I played for the PS3. At first I was amazed by the beauty of the graphics. Very well done and to me the best thing about the game. The game play itself isn't so great. There's not a lot of different things you can do other than swing your sword around. All the enemies have the same basic approach and become more of a nuisance than a challenge after a while. The story isn't that great either and is way too short. I like games that take more than a couple of days to complete. I also like replay value of a game, which this has none. Once you beat the game, that's pretty much it. Nothing special to unlock but artwork and maybe a video or 2, no extra levels, nothing. I see where this is compared to God of War a lot... this doesn't come close. All in all not a bad game, but I would recommend renting it rather than throwing down over $50 for it.

Showcase for the PS3

I had heard a lot about HEAVELY SWORD, both good and bad. The demo on the PS3 got my attention as did all the scenes advertised with the game. Rarely have I played a game through the various levels of difficulty, but I did with this game. IT is a short game, something that could have been corrected with a little bit of exploration element. Unfortuntly, and my old gripe about the game, is the basic premise that you move from one fight scene to another by simply walking/running to the next battle sequence. Without a 'jump' button, your feet are basically attached to the floor as you move from one sequence to another.

That being said, the actual action sequences are tremendous fun. As you gain more experience points and the use of the Sword, there are countless combos and ways to kill your enemies. I have beaten the game several times on various difficulty levels, but I never masterd the aerial combos.

The scenes also look tremondous. The developers took their time to develop the story and really bring it to life with real actors. The result it a great storyline that keeps the game moving. Don't want to post the conclusion of the story, but a sequel would be interesting.

Just Plain Fun

It was so fun I could hardly put it down. I have no complaints. Though some say it was short, why not have a quality FUN game rather than a longer game? All the content was excellent. The final boss fight gave me trouble, but I was more than happy to try the last stage many times because of the fun factor. I did just rent this game, but I plan to buy it. You can go back and revisit checkpoints to get a better score or just plain have fun (headshots with aftertouch, monster combos). After a while I plan to complete hell mode as well, since the game is like a good movie, it will be fun to 'watch' it again with an even greater understanding with added difficulty. Just excellent, my friend and I were passing the controller back and forth between checkpoints and having a great time... Fun to watch as well. ENJOY!

Great game

Overall I loved this game, it was so nice to have a game with a female heroine that is really good. Girl gamers don't always have a lot of choices and this is a good one. Things I liked, game play is relatively easy and fun when you play Nariko, the cut scenes are great, they put in a lot of work on characters showing emotion, thank you Andy Serkis and company. The game is so beautiful both character design as well as the world itself. There are interesting tidbits to unlock as well as you play the game.

Some may view the following as a spoiler, however it does not give any part of the story away.

Things I did not like, playing Kai. At several points in the game you play as Kai, which I am sure that there are many who like this part, but I did not. I felt disconnected from Kai and I did not particularly like the controls for her. I also was not overly thrilled with boss battles. But I think that may be more of a personal preferance thing.

Overall I really loved the game and plan on playing it again.

I love the graphics

This was the first game that i have played with my PS3. I was really looking foward into playing it. I love the story and the graphics are stunning. Only problem, the movie scenes in the games are way too long. You play for 10 Mins. and get another 5 min. movie and as a result, the game is pretty short.
Other than that, its a great game. One of the best for PS3. I hope they have more and more exclusive PS3 games for 2008 coming.

Beautiful!

I loved this game! Like so many others, my only complaint is that itwas sooo short. The graphics are breathtaking and the gameplay is way fun. I've heard a lot of complaints about sixaxis, but I thought it was great fun using it on Kai's missions. I am looking forward to playing this game on Hell Mode soon. I would definitely say this game is worth every penny and is a must buy!
