FFX Crystal Chronicles: Rings of Fate

The game started out okay and then as more characters were introduced, things got hard to manage. I had difficulty keeping track of where characters were on the screen and what abilities they were using (if you are not careful, characters could have algorithms that use all of your items). I also never figured out how to to pile rings to do multiple damage -- perhaps that is something that can only be done in multiplayer mode ???. Anyhow, I got bored with the game about 2/3 of the way through because the platforming and the lever hunting wore on my nerves too much. Unfortunately, there wasn't much of a story for me to bear with it until the end. Personally, I'm a fan of turn-based game play. This game, though, is real-time, so it just may have not been the right game for me :(. I think if you like platforming and hack-n-slash mixed with chibi-cuteness, then you will enjoy this game more than I did. It is really, really, cute :).

just great

I don't like turn-based games. They are really slow and boring.

This is why I love FFCC ring of fates. It is a terrific fun rpg, It is kind of short (you don't have to spend your life playing this game), not difficult (you don't have to keep fighting 2 hours with the same enemies in order to reach level 100 for defeting a monster) and ... they story is a fantastic story.

If you don't like slow RPGs but you like epic stories, this is your game.

Final Fantasy?

As far as a Final Fantasy game goes, I am not sure how much this qualifies. The reason i say this is that, using an online guide maybe once, i finished the game in just under 12 hours. The game was very short. The characters we pretty good, but it would have been nicer if your other members did more while you controlled one. I also agree that the point of view was a little hard to use. Dont get me wrong, it was a good game, the biggest thing was it was too short, and in a way, almost too easy for a Final Fantasy game.

Needed a pause, and a quick save

This game is really fun to play, and the characters and graphics are super cute. If you prefer action/adventure RPG's (like the ____ of Mana and Summon Night series, and Zelda) as opposed to turn-based and strategy types, you will probably enjoy Ring of Fates. Each character has a variety of different moves to choose from in battles, so you don't have to feel like you are just mashing the attack button until all the monsters go away (although, you probably can get by doing that, if you really want to). The story and general formula (dungeon, boss fight, back to town for supplies and info, repeat) are nothing new, but considering it only takes 20-30 hours to complete, you probably won't get bored of it before you finish.

The number one problem for me was that this game isn't really very portable. There is no pause. Even when you switch to the menu screens, monsters will still appear and attack you on the other screen. There is also no quick save function. You can just close the DS (assuming your battery isn't running out) and it goes into suspend mode, but when you open it back up, you'll be immediately immersed in monster fighting action. In short, it's not very good for playing on the bus, on lunch breaks or for an hour or less in between other activities.

I had also hoped to use the stylus more (like in Zelda: Phantom Hourglass) but most game play is done with the buttons and the the d-pad, and switching over to the stylus for the few tasks you need it for is kind of awkward.

This game could have been better, but I still had a lot of fun playing it and would recommend it if you liked the above mentioned games.

Better than its predecessor FFCC

After owning this game for a little over 3 weeks and having beaten it twice, I can say that it's a game worth getting for people who enjoy the Final Fantasy series and FFCC on the gamecube. The annoying part of the game in the original FFCC is gone in this game, you don't have to carry a chalice to protect yourself from the miasma anymore however there is a secret level in the game that you unlock (when you beat the game once) that is reminiscent of FFCC.

The graphics in this game are stunning. The controls are easy to get used to once you're playing through the game for 30 minutes - 1 hour. Each character has his/her own tribe ability which lends itself to solving small puzzles with each ability in the levels.

The story mode itself is very short - you could beat the game in 10 hours , less if you don't bother leveling up much. The story in the game itself is really involving and some parts were surprisingly sad (since I thought this was like a kiddie version of FF like FFCC). Most of the bosses have the same methodology of beating them - but when you go through the game for a third time they present much more of a challenge. I've only played through the story mode, but I've heard that multiplayer mode is done well and is a lot of fun. The only downside to the game is the repetitive hack and slash, but that's not too bad. I recommend getting it.

A great game!!!

I really enjoyed this game. Game play is alittle different. You can gather different recipes to make certain objects like weapons, armor, and goods as such as iron, silk etc. I like the fact that its live fighting instead of turn based. You can switch between characters and has mild stylus play. The only thing that I wish that they done was give more spells or have a way to learn new spells. Other than that its a great game for teens to adults!

(^O^) << I Love Moogles, Kupo !

I got this game for my Birthday which was just a couple days ago. Umm ... honestly haven't been a BIG fan of Final Fantasy aside from the Final Fantasy : Advent Children movie. This game is kinda a more different version of Zelda. But it has it fun moments but after awhile you get bored of it. Sad that the enemy guy had to kill the kids Father.

Seriously fun, but has issues

This game is a lot of fun. There's no two ways about that. Let's start with a handy pros/cons list, to set the mood for this review:

Pros:
-Crafting system is so much fun
-The character classes/races are interesting and don't get boring; work together well
-Combat is enjoyable
-Multiplayer is (would be, I haven't played it but I can conjecture) great
-Storyline, though childish, has some interesting twists and turns

Cons:
-Meeth, the Lilty character, is the worst Final Fantasy character I've ever encountered, and the most annoying character on a Nintendo system since Navi in Ocarina of Time
-Wonky controls (use my thumbs on my DS screen? No.)
-Worst team AI I have ever encountered in a videogame career that spans nearly two decades.

The crafting system is my favorite part of this game. Making items with customizable bonuses (although these bonuses seem to be random and not dependent on the type of gem you use) is such fun. And the fact that they show up on your character adds a whole new level of customization. Each race is enjoyable to play (except maybe the Lilty, the part where you have to play as Meeth solo and do the boss fight is absurd). The Clavat are great for bashing things, the Yukes have class and are the most interesting to look at, and the Selkie double jump makes life so much easier.
The control scheme is...odd. The switching with the stylus is difficult and time-consuming, often getting me killed in boss battles. I refuse to use my thumbs on my DS screen. The ring-lock magic system is something I just stopped messing with. Even with multiple rings, the casting system is hard to use, and also frequently gets my Yuke character killed in battle. This goes double for the tribal abilities. Charge attacks make up for them once they are acquired.
The AI is the worst aspect of this game. Having teammates is pointless. Those few times where you only have to play one character are so much more fun than having the whole team bogging you down. It feels more like babysitting than squad combat. They can be standing on lava (LAVA!), getting burned, and will not move. They randomly fall off objects, they refuse to attack enemies, the list goes on. Bonuses such as black mage's eye are annoying, as they just use up your magicite non-stop. Bonuses like warrior's eye/thief's eye serve no purpose. I just stuck with the Selkie most of the time and let the others meet their fate. In boss fights, I'd switch to the Clavat for massive damage.
The biggest problems are switching characters and really bad AI, which is why I think that multiplayer would be great. If I could get three of my friends to buy this game, we would have a great time. All in all, it feels a lot more like Zelda than Final Fantasy. There're some mild puzzles, real-time combat, etc. This game should get 3 stars, but its too much fun, so I gave it 4.

A fun hack & slash RPG Dungeon Crawler! (Said a mouthful, didn't I?)

I just got Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates last week, and so far I love it! The story is cool, the music is good, the fighting is fun, and the graphics are great!

One of the things I like most about this game is it's attention to detail, the character models, backgrounds, event scenes, and cutscenes all look great! It's especially cool how the weapons, armor, and other equipment change the look of the characters, something you rarely see in RPG's for the DS. Equiping your character with a new weapon or armor changes the character's appearance on the field, meaning that if you equip Yuri with a Red Hat, he'll be wearing it on the field, and the same goes for armor and weapons! You can even dress up your characters to look like classes from other Final Fantasy games! Equip your character with a Black Mage Hood & Black Mage Robe, and your character's physical appearance on the field will be that of a Black Mage!
However, this effect only lasts on the field, once you enter an event scene, your characters will all be wearing their default clothing. Kinda lame, but whatever...
The use of the Touch Screen in this game is also really good. Smooth, simple Touch Screen interface can either make or break a DS game, and in this case, I'm happy to say that in the case of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates, it's a smooth and seamless interface.

However, this game is not without it's cons...
The party's AI is really bad! If you're not playing on multiplayer, then don't expect any help from your comrades. In single player mode, you're on your own... The other members of the party tend to get in the way alot during battle, and offer absolutely no assistance! They won't cast healing spells on you when you run low on heatlh, the won't cover you while you cast spells of your own, and they seldom even attack the enemy! Pretty much all your AI party members do during battle is run directly infront of the enemy, and stand there while being attacked, occasionally hitting the enemy once or twice before dying.
Another problem is the magic system... While it's pretty easy to use and operate by yourself, attack based magic doesn't deal nearly enough damage for the time it takes to cast, and without any competent party members to cover you while you're casting it, you can expect to take quite a bit of damage while you cast.
Another small thing is the voice acting... While I am happy that it's there, I wish that it were of higher quality... It's definitely not the best voice acting I've heard in a DS game.

All complaints aside, I'm not unhappy with my purchase of Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates. Although 40 dollars is a bit high for a DS game, you can see where it went with the length of the game & quality of the graphics, they definitely didn't put this one on the standard 256MB DS card.
Regardless of what Game Informer's review said about this game, Single Player mode is still fun. A little bit frustrating, but as long as you've got someone else to play with you're set to have alot of fun!

Overall Rating: (Depends on how you play)
Single Player Rating: 3 out of 5 Stars.
Multiplayer Rating: 4 out of 5 Stars.

For maximum enjoyment of the game, link it up and play it with friends or play it over the Wi-Fi connection!

Not quite perfect

I love the concept, all the stuff I've seen so far, but the controls are *terrible*. Your character is in a world that's oriented diagonally, so you constantly have to hold down two directions on the d-pad to move properly. I can't imagine why they didn't rotate the input 45 degrees like they did for Final Fantasy Tactics Advance. It doesn't make the game unplayable, but it sure makes it less fun.
