A very changed, but phenomenal Silent Hill game!!!!

I just played this game and am just about half way through the whole game and I have to confess "This game does differ from the other Silent Hill games" but this is in a good way.
This game tells the story of Henry Townshend, a guy who lives in Ashfield, a town not far from Silent Hill. One day, he starts having nightmares that are being repeated every night, since then, he has not be able to step outside his apartment because of the dozen locks all over his door with a note :
Don't Go Out
Walter
As I said before this game has changed from the other Silent Hill games, and I actually like Konami's new gameplay. For instance, in this game, you don't have a radio of static or a flashlight (cuz most of the places you will visit are very bright atmospheres and is easy to spot a monster in it's tracks), which I feel has been a great idea by Konami. In the last Silent Hill games, the atmospheres seemed to be so incredibly dark, even I could not go through the game smoothly, and I think that's what Konami was trying to do, make the horror "smoothly" at a great pace. To explain, the scares in this game aren't up to the ranks of Silent Hill 3, but the scares in this game feel "smooth" and not a HUGE scare at one minute and a LITTLE scare after that. Silent Hill 4 has scares that I can say runs "smoothly" and won't make you want to shut off the game because of how scary it is, and I actually like that. Great thought and idea Konami for trying this method of scares. They feel so much classical and, again, "smoothly"!
Another thing different in this game from the other Silent Hill games is the gameplay part. In the middle of gameplay, in order to swithc a weapon, you ACTUALLY CANNOT put the game on pause...NOW you have to switch weapons during gameplay, which is to make the switching weapons more realistic. Most of the weapons you have in the game are pipes, baseball bat, and very few firepower but the melee weapons are still your trusty and main weapons in this game.
The grpahics, as people have also said before me, has slightly improved from Silent Hill 3. I shouldn't really be saying the graphics are better in this game cux it sounds like SH3's graphics weren't phenomenal like these. On a scale from 1 to 10 on graphics, I pick 11 cuz these graphics I guarantee cannot ANY MORE realistic, they're so realistic, it's scary!!!
Overall, I love this game and is a good welcome to newcomer Silent Hill fans because this game is a little more easier than the other Silent Hill games, so newcomers will be comfortable with this game. When your ready, newcomers, you can play TWICE as scared in the other games, but first start out with this game. Muhwahahahaha!

I played silent hill 2 and silent hill 3 and got hooked. To me they are the scariest games ever. But silent hill 4 alright but ,I just wished that it keep me to the edge of my seat if you know what I mean.

One of the best...

Silent Hill 4 is as much of a masterpiece as 1 and 2. 3 was a gigantic letdown, I don't know why but I play that game least. I like it, but it's the first to take place outside of Silent Hill, which is what happened with 4. The apartment isn't even in SH, so most of the game is outside the little town. That's my only complaint, because what fun is a SILENT HILL game if it's not even in Silent Hill? Quite a bit, actually, but still.
This game plays alot like the third game- heavy combat. This one, however, has much more of a story than SH3, and much more interesting, too. It still falls incredibly short of the greatest game ever created, Silent Hill 2, but it's unfair to compare the two. So I won't. This game is worth every penny, no matter what some braindead retard says. Buy it.

good entry for the series, but not as good as SH2/3

I enjoyed this game for the most part, but not as much as SH2 and SH3, which were both fantastic. The idea of returning to your apartment in between each adventure kinda makes the game feel like you're progressing through 'levels' and breaks up the normally smooth flowing plot development.

Worth the 20 bucks for sure for general players (I paid 40 bucks for it at release), and SH fans will want it to have the complete series to date.

Not as bad as they made it sound...

Believe me I have played far worse games than this one. But all the other reviews are bickering about it a little too much.

Story: The story was well put together. It gives you a story from articles found in the other games. If you have played SH2 and SH3 you know what I'm talking about. The story centers around a young man named Henry Townshend whom is unfortunately at the wrong place at the wrong time. He is mysteriously locked from the inside of his apartment and has to travel to other worlds from a hole in his bathroom. The story makes more sense after you get deeper into the game.

Gameplay: You first might think: oh great, another Maria tag along ...but she actually fights!! But of course there is a twist in that of couse. Now there is also a charge up gauge so you now can either charge up and hit with strong strike or multiple short hits. Also the inventory thing is a bit of a downfall. But atleast it makes you think before carrying items. And you have your lovely chest located in Henry's apartment where you can store your excess items.

Sound: This is probably my second favorite SH composition Akira Yamaoka has done next to SH2. The theme "Room of Angel" is beautiful, yet haunting. There may be a lack of music but that makes the game more eerier.

Summary: It's definately a must have for a Silent Hill fan. So, if you're looking for a decent survival game this is it. :D It may not be as great as SH2 but it's worth checking out.

Imagine you awake one day to find that you are trapped inside your apartment. Not only that, ghosts hunt you and there is a hole in the wall of your bathroom that takes you to what can only be describe as an alternate world quite close to hell.

The only way out is to solve the mystery surrounding several murders that took place at your building some time ago, and a new series that are happening now.

The game play is awesome, changing between third person to first person. The quality of the riddles is great, in fact is the first time that I can say that the riddles weren't unfair or vague at least. Great characters, great setting, great visuals, astonishing sound, make this game one of the bests I've played.

I played it with my cousins during a 2 week period, and is one of those games that you can play with company and they will not get bored, some riddles takes time, and brain power, to solve.

Ah! This review is for the Playstation 2 edition.

I had rented the game & wanted to buy it after playing it, and Amazon was the only place I could find it for sale. It's a great game.

another overrated Silent Hill game

Though I admit the premise is intriguing, and the atmosphere is spooky as hell, there is very little real substance to the game, and I'm not sure why I continue to play these Silent Hill titles. Lots of walking around whacking these creatures with a plank of wood... That's not my idea of fun gaming, and I find it disappointing that in some ways Silent Hill has set the standard for survival horror lower than it should be. They all pale in comparison to other games in the genre like Fatal Frame, Resident Evil, and Clocktower.

what can I say?

A lot of people have been hard on this game, while others stand by it saying it is amazing.... well, it is a little bit of both really, to be perfectly honest, and before you go further, I am planing on giving away some minor spoilers to the game's progression and scares. I will admit that it doesn't hold up to Silent Hill 2 and isn't quite as scary as Silent hill 1... but I think the game is about as good as the third instalment. The story starts off really weak, with only the "trapped in the apartment" gimick to keep you going. As you get further, thigs pick up pace, and as your apartment starts to deteriorate and becomes haunted, things get far more frightening. In fact, everything up to the point where the apartment gets haunted is pretty lame (and considering there is a possibility that some people will never have a haunted apartment due to choices made in the game, it is possible your first play-through could be a little lack-luster to say the least). Combat is decent, and the story is good, when it does pick up pace. The monsters are well thought out and creepy, but due to brighter game areas, and a focus on fighting monsters rather than running, they are no where near as heart stopping as the creatures of past instalments. It is, despite a few changes, just more of the same in the Silent Hill franchise, which is a shame, As Resident Evil is off reinventing the concept of survival horror games, Konami is giving us a graphical up-date to a game that was released 8 years ago. It isn't bad, by any means, but Silent Hill 4 just doesn't quite live up to the legacy that the original built and the second and third instalments solidified. It is worth purchasing, for sure, but only for less than 30 dollars, in my opinion.
