Best Gaming Purchase I've Ever Made

5 Rating: 5, Useful: 3 / 4

I had my reservations about Orange Box--it included two games that I already owned: Half-Life 2 and Half-Life 2: Episode 1. I did want Portal and Episode 2 pretty bad, and I was indifferent about TF2. Turns out that all three of the games were totally worth the price, and I've never had more fun in an online game than on TF2. If you like first person shooters, even if you aren't very good, Orange Box is the best thing on the market!

Lives up to the Hype

The surprise hit of this package is Portal - one of the most refreshing, innovative games I've played in years. Episode 1 is probably the weak link, but Episode 2 if more than worthy of the Half-Life name.

The fun comes in more ways than you might think... and it's better than cake.

The Orange Box is not going to disappoint you. I can pretty much guarantee it.

You get everything you need to unlock a whole lot of gaming bliss. Lets start with the big ticket items.

HALF LIFE 2: If you do not have this already, then this is the PERFECT package to get it in. The game itself is amazing. It gives you the full monty of gaming gooodnes. You get great graphics, outstanding game play and a well developed story and characters. But like the man says, WAIT there's more! Once you have Half Life 2 installed, the whole world of MODS opens up to you. MOD stands for Modification. These are things that folks create to allow Half Life 2 (HL2) to become an entirely new game. You want to play a first person shooter with soldiers vs terrorists? There is a free MOD out there to do it. You want to play as a viking versus pirates? There is a free MOD for it. On and on it goes, with tons of free content out there that can extend the gaming fun of HL2. Just start googling "Half life 2 MOD" and you are on your way. Then there are MODs that you can pay for, like Day of Defeat:Source, which gives you a World War II themed first person shooter.

PORTAL: You are going to love this one! I even let my 7 and 8 year old sons play this. It is a puzzle environment that can really get your brain going. You have a gun that shoots two portals, go through one to come out of the other one. You use it to get out of rooms and the puzzles are great.

EPISODE 1: The next chapter in the story for HL2.

EPISODE 2: The second episode in the Half Life story line. This is another great extension of the overall story arc. Once you have HL2, Episode 1 and Episode 2, you have the whole deal to date.

TEAM FORTRESS 2: Remember those MODs I told you about? Well this is one of them. It turns HL2 into a first person shooter that feels like being inside a 1940's Warner Brothers cartoon. But in this cartoons, there are lots more explosions and bazookas.

I have played a whole lot of games, and this one is the most complete package anyone could ask for. Whether you are a gaming novice looking for your first introduction to computer gaming or your an old hand, this is a MUST BUY.

Do you already own HL2? No problem, you can simply gift this second copy of HL2 to someone else via steam. Share the bliss with someone else who has not yet taken the plunge.

Great Game

I bought this game for my roommate here at college. He loves it and for the last month it's been just about the only thing he plays (with minor breaks only for guitar hero). The single player half-life 2 is very, very long with the addition of episode one and two, even longer. Portal isn't as long, but it's a fun game and he would play that inbetween bouts of half-life 2. Hasn't played a lot of the team fortress, but that's just because the other games are so good.

Portal is AMAZING

We bought the game solely for Portal. Haven't even bothered to touch the other games yet.
Portal is simply amazing though. The characters, although really, there are only two (unless you count the companion cube =P) are very well thought out and really interesting, you'll get pulled into the story and won't want to stop until you figure out what is what. (And even by the end, there's still loose ends that make you really want more). Great game, great story, let's just hope to death that there's a SEQUEL!

Great Game Set

The games in this set have been released for a while (except for Portal) but all still have an amazing appeal. If you want to be fulfilled in your gaming experience (Half-Life 2) and then some (Team Fortress 2 and Portal) I recommend this set.

Despite Steam, a phenomenal game!

This package is worth it for Team Fortress 2 alone, but getting Half Life 2 and both it's episodes is a wicked sweet bonus! I have NEVER had more fun playing a FPS than with TF2. The Pixar style designs work perfectly, and help maximize the "fun factor". If you love team/role-based FPS, then this is the grandaddy of them all. :)

Buy it. 'Nuff said.

I loved HL2. I loved HL2 E1. This episode, however, is both uninspired and frustrating. Too many missions which are thinly disguised timed missions. (You know, wave after wave of mobs are thrown at you and if one makes it past you through one of the areas you are guarding have failed and thus get to restart.) The plot that is being advanced is, well, about as original as as an MST3K movie. Your new weapon is a mine you must fire with the grav gun so it sticks to a mob, and then switch to another wep and hit the mine so it explodes.

BTW, if the mine gets hit by enemy fire even when it is in your grasp, it crumbles. Also, if you miss and land it near the mob, the mine merely shatters.

Wow! What a great innovation!

And, this is the wep you get for one of the timed missions--the last boss mission.

Sadly, also, this entire episode only takes about 5-6 hours to finish if you explore a lot. You are not getting a lot of content for your dollar.

The best graphics, plus extras!

This is a stellar package. First, the Episode 2 is GORGEOUS if you have the hardware. It is very hardware-dependent, so if you have an older graphics card or little memory, you might get chop-city when you play. But it's great on mine. The story of Ep 2 integrates well with Episode 1, which is the usual for Valve. The first part of the story is a bit shocking, so be prepared. Portal is a BLAST, though I must say, I find myself stuck pretty frequently... Need to work on those 3-dimensional skills. Never played Team Fortress, but the graphics look cartoonish in a really good way.

I love Steam. I purchase once, and I can play games wherever I go. If I get on a new machine, I log in, and Steam downloads what I need to play, including the ENTIRE game. This is FAR AND AWAY better than ANY other software design, and I dare anyone else to compare the typical licensing process to Steam's design. IE: If you've tried to install a game on machine 2 and the corporate license lackeys knows you installed it on machine 1 and stops you from installing it or playing it, you know what I mean.

I was unsure I'd like buying all these games I already own (HL2 and Ep 1), but I love how Steam gives you three license numbers, one for HL2, one for Ep 1, and one for the brand new stuff. I plan on giving the older numbers to a relative, and keep the new games for myself. Others could probably sell numbers to their friends. Again, bravo Valve, but you lose a star for not selling the "Black box" with just the new stuff, especially when you can buy the older stuff at significant discount.

Great value.

I bought my copy over Steam, but this game package is still awesome. HL2 episode 2 was fantastic, compelling and emotionally taxing. Portal is a great puzzle game. Kept me thinking and had me stumped several times. TF2...best multiplayer of the year.
