Not much there

I was expecting more from this game. Having built a highend computer and wanting to test the graphics and CPU power, I got Q4 based on how the engine worked with my graphics card (Nvidia) and the fact that I have lots and lots of time playing Doom and Quake 2.
The game did satisfy about how well my computer was doing, but I found the play constricted and repetitive. You can only go where the game allows (green doors) and there are very few puzzles you have to solve to get from area to area. I also found the constant voice with "Corporal Cain, do this, Corporal Cain where are you, etc" to become a major annoyance. Once through was enough of this game.

I was generally pleased with the graphics and movement, but it did not seem that you had any chance to hide and defend yourself. they just come out of the wood work and it also id not seem to have a easy level so you could get used to the game play! but over all I'd recommend it to any first person shooter gamer it will keep you on your toes.

After Quake 3?

After Quake 3 I was really apprehensive about this purchase. I thought, oh no not another frag everything party but this has goal. Not much of a story but it was ok because the graphics were cool and game play smooth. I thought it was long enough but game writers need to include more puzzles in these to add to fun. The AI in this is terrific for the time it came out and the weapons selection is super. Once again I find myself comparing every game to Half life.

pretty, linear and no directions

wish I could have all the effects cranked, but, even with the newest patch, I couldn't access the very highest resolutions (and it wasn't my system since it's a 2007 high-end/crossfire model).

still, it looks excellent, but I kinda felt like I was on a conveyor belt from the very beginning. Nothing to explore and only one way to kill/get through a level - very linear

halfway through the game, there's a boss battle I just couldn't get through...even after about 30 attempts....and that was on the easiest setting!!! Part of my problem was I couldn't figure out the missile tracking system (there are no directions for this with the game or anywhere online as far as my research went). I wasn't impressed enough with the game play to continue and sold it

by the way, I only bought this "special DVD edition " because I got it at the same price as the single CD. The extra content is pretty lousy. Yeah, the "making of..." is o.k., but old Quake 2 and it's expansion packs aren't worth anything to me. Those games weren't good enough to play more than once.

though not quite as graphically advanced (debatable), "Far Cry" is much more immersing (I actually finished that on "medium" difficulty)

Outdated Graphics - Old Story Line...

God, to think so many talented people, put in so much time, and so much hard work, and hours of coding and meetings, and pizza dinners, and miss their families, for this? Dude, WTF?

Using the Outdated Quake III engine for this game was the first mistake, this game looks like it's right out of the 1990s.

The Story line is interesting enough, but stupid.
If you could land a bunch of people on a planet, well, why?
Just keep pounding it with nukes from orbit, just like they said in ALIENS, 'it's the only way to be sure.'
A 15 minute game: jump to system, get in orbit, blow the planet to bits, done - go home for dinner!

Otherwise the weapons look like regurged versions of Q3 weapons,
with some slight change in lighting and sound effects.

The characters are improved, with some new maps,
but hey, it's a bug hunt.
Seen one FPS, seen'em all - if it moves, shoot it.
If it bleeds, shoot it again!

I mean, come on.
Really, can we get past the whole 'run around and shoot stuff' model?
How about something with some challenge?

Something that's oh, I don't know, FUN?

Skip this twitch master, and try Myst V - End of Ages.
A real game that is a challenge, with top notch graphics and award winning sound.

They did right with the DOOM engine

They did with the doom engine the way it should be. Not just Cramp space.

The enhancing of the weapons as you went along was excellent.

I'm going to make a small review here. Quake 4 is an enjoyable FPS game for us SMART players. The graphics are highly reminiscent of Doom 3 but at a slightly more modified rate. The gameplay is fun as hell. Everything else is just good to the very least.

The only drawbacks in this game are the high system requirements and it has a few bugs. In the case of the Xbox 360 version, the players are screwed with even more drawbacks. However, in the PC version, we can thankfully download some patches to fix the bugs in the game.

Overall, a great but not perfect game. The PC version is better than the 360 version. Oh, and don't listen to the reviewers who give Quake 4 low ratings; they're either stupid Halo fanatics or losers who can't play a good shooter.

4.5/5

What happened?

I just bought a new Dell XPS 700 so when I got this game I wanted to be blown away, but that didn't happen. After playing FEAR I guess not many first person shooters can come close to that. Do yourself a Favor and skip this game. The story line is good but that is all it has going for it. Half the time I spent walking around in circles and not getting anything done. I've played it three times and I can't get over how poor the graphics are compared to FEAR they came out at about the same time. I guess the producers just wanted to rest on the Quake name. They could have done better. That being said if you like FPS than buy it, but don't expect a FEAR like game. Three Stars.

Okay, but.......

It's an okay game, but I have found it to be very unstable with frequent crashes.

Currently the Best FPS out!!
