A Waste of Time, and Money

I love Star Trek, but this game did not cut it. Belongs to the rentals. I had hoped to fly capital ships, decide whether I use up all "auxilary power" for the shields, or phaser banks, or for the warp core. This game was even cheaper than a "Star W**s" game. Flying with a small fighter, and the Klingon Bird of Prey was so small!! small as the little fighter we had to fly. The Bird of Prey did not even come close to the size of the capital ships. I am sorry for the people who authorized this production, and for the quality control testers, you did a bad job. Try this game, by renting it. Not worth buying.

Very Challenging game

This game is fun, but it takes some time to get used to the controls. The gameplay is great fun, but often very challenging. I'm only about halfway through the game, but I think with some dedication and practice it's possible to beat it. The bad points on this game are difficulty in using the targeting scanners. Sometimes, to find an enemy vessel, you have to cycle through all your allies, and be careful not to fire on them. Also random and often pointless communications from the Excelsior, and enemy ships, completely block all your targeting information, for about 5 seconds. This can be a serious annoyance when you are trying to target a specific enemy. Also, the pre-mission videos are blockable, but the in mission videos, are not only non-blockable, but while they are going, your ship can take damage while you cannot see where you are going. Overall, the game is fun, but very challanging. You have to be very skilled, to beat a seemingly unstoppable number of fighters. I am still playing the easy version of the game, but it is not a game for those who don't have the serious dedication to beating the game. One serious annoyance is the time bonuses. It's best to concentrate on finishing the mission with the current best ship, and reduing the previous missions with more advanced fighters that you find later in the game. Also, to take on the capital ships, your fighter has to be very close to the ship to do real serious damage. There is also no, team controls for friendly fighters, so most targets that you engage, will either have no friendly support, or you will be blocked from engaging enemies with your own fighters. Also, friendly fire runs rampant, so try to avoid your allies altogether. Overall good game, but could have used some adjustments before the official release.

Its fun and not as bad as others would make you think..

I thoroughly enjoyed this game and on the easy setting it isn't all that difficult. It also offers something different then the other Star Trek games. Instead of flying a big lumbering slow starship you are in a fighter, a more rapid paced game! Plenty of episodes in this with good graphics of old star trek nemesis's that I won't reveal here. I have played nearly every Star Trek game that has come out and almost everyone seems to get bad reviews, it just seems thats the fashion now days. Yes I liked Star Trek Legacy too, though it did have some flaws it was still fun. If you like Star Trek you will like this game, if you don't you might still get some enjoyment out of it, but I think some serious effort went into it. Not at all deserving of the one star reviews etc.

All I can say is it is about time. I have been waiting for a new Star Trek game to come on PS2 since Elite Force. This one was going to come out in Feb of 2002, but TDK had to stop production to fund other games they thought would be more profitable. They finlly started working on it again in March 2003. I already ordered it 2 mouths(forgive me if I spelled that wrong) in advance!! I can't wait

Please someone make a good ST game!!!!

I have been an avid fan of ALL of the Trek shows, I read the books and collect the merchandise. Now with that being said I believe Paramount has made more than enough profit from all the combined shows, movies, syndications and books to put someone on the job to finally create an awesome game for the FANS. If it was not for us they would have a lot less moola. I'm not going to go into tearing this game to pieces over my dissapointment, I'll just say it was not worth it and I feel that Paramount owes me and the rest of the ST fans around the world a good game. So Paramount here is my challenge to you, Can you finally make a game worthy of the Fans that have made you more rich than you would have been without us. Get off your duffs and do something.

Wow, this is goooooooooood. I'd been waiting for a game like this to come out. From what I've heard of it, it's extremely interesting. I intend to purchase it the first day it comes out -- or pre-order it here, if it's easier that way. :) Whenever I see an ad for the game in the magazine, I usually first see it out of the corner of my eye, and I get the vision, every time, of "Shatnered Universe," which is totally disconcerting. Every time. Well, maybe after I get it and play it a million times, that'll go away. I can't honestly vouch for it as if I've played, but I swear this game is good.

I loved playing this game. I am a Trek fan from back in the 60's.Obviously, the idea was taken from the episode "Mirror, Mirror".It was great playing as an under cover bad guy through pieces of various episodes from the classic series, even though you dont get a chance to pilot a star ship, you get to engage and destroy them as a shuttle pilot, taking orders from Capt Sulu. The game play is challenging and the graffics are great. The Best Trek game Ive ever played.

Good premise, promises but fails in the end. :)

I was so looking forward to this game. Whereas most previous Star Trek shooting games involved massive ship battles, this game took a different direction and went with smaller ships to do the battles. But that was where they didn't pull the game together.

My biggest quip of the game, the difficulty settings don't mean a darn thing. I have changed the difficulty settings so many times to try and make the game easier, but there is no noticeable difference in gameplay. For example, in easy mode, there are no fewer ships, no greater fire power on your ship, nor can your own ship sustain greater damage.

My next biggest quip: except for the earlier levels (currently in level 6) you are the only fighter and the dang Excelsior doesn't help in fighting, even when other capitol ships fly in and start shooting at it. Currenlty, in level 6, after I play it for over 1/2 hour, I fought over 60 enemies, with the player being the only ship fighting. How does that make sense?

My third problem with this game is that the targeting system does diddly. I have aimed at the "lead the target" area and the phaser bolts (the only weapon, which you do get as well as torpedos and phasers, you can do this with) usually don't hit the enemy.

All in all, this game sucks. Levels are too long, almost 30 mins, making it a terribly frustrating and ungratifying game. There just isn't much to this game that I wish I had known about, except for the beautifully rendered graphics, before laying money down for this game.

Don't be fooled!

I admit it... the package got me. On the front cover is a ship that looks like the Enterprise, locked in the heat of battle against other ships. I believed that I would be piloting the Flagship of the Federation against evil versions of the good guys.

Wrong.

Firstly, you're in the Excelsior, not the Enterprise. Sulu is running the ship and seems to need the player's help more often than not. You DO NOT get to pilot the starship! Instead, you are manning an awkward, clumsy fighter craft with horribly designed controls. Good luck.

I have a pet-peeve with flying games... most of them have solved this problem, but others like this Star Trek game, haven't... I like having the ship go up when I press the up button and down when I press down. I cannot stand the inverted method of flying. Most game designers have understood that there are people like me out there and have created different configurations to fix this. Not Star Trek.

I could rant about this game forever... bad graphics, bad music, pointless scenarios, blah, blah, blah. Instead, I will wrap up this review by saying how disappointed I am. This could have been a fantastic game if one person had a little bit of an imagination. This is a flying game, plain and simple... it's just got a Star Trek theme. Don't be fooled like me.

Rent first!

Bad bad bad ...

Wooden acting ... even for Star Trek, CG that would have looked impressive five years ago, awful physics, a miserable targeting system (you're flying fighters btw, not capital ships), and having to do the same "gnat against an armada" mission over and over again without appreciable support from any of the AI ships on your side makes this frustrating at best. Barely even worth renting. I can see why this didn't come out until after christmas. There would have been an awful lot of geeks disappointed at this in their stockings.
