this game is kinda cool, for the first 15 min. After that its pretty darn boring. Its nothing like GTA3, the graphics are more comic bookish and the missions are just plain stupid and uncool. I wouldnt buy this brand new, you'd be better off buying this one used. in fact i've got one if you want to buy it.

This game is fun for about 5 minutes, then you realize that you got [a bad deal]. I returned this game the next day and bought a quality title "Shadowman 2" which is one of the best games I have played on the PS2.

It's no GTA3

Yup. But it is good at wearing out your thumb. I can imagine how many people will want to buy this game, given that rockstar made the great GTA3. Just don't let the name fool you - this game is just a lot of headache... There's way too much going on on the screen at one time, and it's near impossible to concentrate on the game hero. The game is basically a specialized gta3 (centered on beating people up and breaking things), except it's nowhere near as realistic (you can run straight through people, and the amount of detail is miniscule, compared to gta3).
Overall, I strongly recommend renting this game first. Once you do, I'm quite sure you won't want to buy it. Everyone is everywhere at once, and you will find yourself jamming the buttons mindlessly.

I didn't like this game very much. Sure, it's got violence, and lots of it, but after you get past the gore (granted, it takes a while) then you've got a very shallow game. You'll get maybe, a half hour, to an hour of gameplay, then throw it aside, along with all those games you got tired of when you were 5.

Please, Rockstar, Grand Theft Auto 3 was so much better than this, send this game back to h3ll where it came from...NOW!

Best Feature: Violence by the boatload!
Worst Feature: Everything else...
Final Score: 2/5 Nothing great here, try GTA3 instead.

A great rental...

This is the perfect title to rent. It's fun, the graphics are very good. The atmosphere is immersive, you really get a sense of being in the middle of a riot. You get to beat the heck out corporate drones and rent-a-cops. It's a blast...for a couple of days. Unfortunately, the game gets repetitive and formulaic after the 30th "mission" or so. This holds true for both the chaos mode and the story mode... Parents who are reading this should be warned: this game is incredibly violent, there is an option to turn off the gore but at it's heart the game is about shooting, stabbing, hacking and beating people to death. Don't say I didn't warn you.

I wonder if this game caused any murder rates to go up?.....

After playing GTA 3, I was so excited about being able to play another Rockstar game....know that it's out and I've played it....I've realized how much it really... There's no point to the game except to go around killing people. Am i the only one who thinks this is boring after 10 minutes?

It's like they took one interesting part of GTA 3 and tried to make a whole game out of it minus the missions and any possible plot. This game is a renter, never to be purchased!

Less Fun Than a Home Enema Kit.

Rockstar really screwed up by releasing this game so soon after GTA3. To make this review really short, I'll say this. Playing Grand Theft Auto 3, then playing State of Emergency is like dating the captain of the cheerleading squad all year, then taking her ugly sister to the prom. I think everyone assumed that since both titles were developed by Rockstar Games, that SoE would emulate GTA3. But there is absolutely no discernable storyline. The characters are unbelievably corny, and the game play is tame and shallow. In fact, a robust game of Tetris has more depth than SoE. Rockstar could have done so much better that it makes me cry.

Run. Screaming.

Don't let Rockstar's recent run of great games on PS2 fool you: State of Emergency is a poorly conceived, frustrating, repetitive experience that will leave you wishing you'd bought something else.

The concept is strong--wreak havoc in the middle of a riot to overthrow a corrupt government. You even get fun weapons to play with, including Molotovs, assault rifles, rocket launchers, and flamethrowers. It's just the thing to unwind with after a rough day in the office, but as a game, it's just not fun. There's no story to make you care about what's going on around you, and there are only three mission types (escort someone, kill someone, blow something up) used over and over and over again.

The difficulty level starts off hard and quickly becomes unforgiving. You'll need to execute some missions with perfection to make your ammo and health last. It's easier--and just as rewarding--to enable the cheats and beat the game in three hours. It's not like there's any sense of reward for doing anything, apart from the chance to go do the same thing again.

Definitely rent before you buy. You'll probably get sick of the game in an hour and be thankful you've still got the money to buy Grand Theft Auto 3.

Not bad, not great...

To be honest, when I first got word of this game I was skeptical on why everyone thought it would be like GTA3. I didn't expect it to be THAT good as far as fun factor and I was right. When you play this game you should just expect a riot game and no more. I had fun with this game because its a guilty pleasure and I think everyone would like to be in a riot if they didn't have to suffer the consequences.

STATE OF EMERGENCY offers plenty of weapons to defeat the evil Corporation and their efforts to monopolize everything. Also, you get a small set of renegade anarchists that sport a list of moves that will get you into the feel of the FATAL FURY days...only 3D and a lot more gory. Of course, recent RockStar games (GTA3, Max Payne) have presented the players with a fair amount of gore. SOE doesn't fall short on that aspect. You can blow people into pieces and then use the pieces as weapons, use a shotgun to remove a head, grab helpless rioters and fling them to the ground and beat them senseless, and much more. Its shere violence at its best...although a little redundant at times.

Which brings us to the most obvious reason people don't like this game. The replay factor isn't necessarily of the longest span (In other words, it gets boring quick). You will notice yourself beating off Corporation lackies for what may seem like an eternity (In Chaos mode especially).

Finally, we have the difficulty which is always addressed by reviewers on gaming sites. This game CAN be hard, but its not as hard as people let off. The camera angles get really cooky at times, but its nothing a true gamer can't get used to with a little practice. The missions also sport a little difficult, but that, too, can be overcome with some gametime.

To sum it up, only buy this game if you are a RockStar games fanatic or you really, really need a stress releaver. Otherwise I would just call this a weekend rental at best.

This game has moments, but it's not worth the hype!

State of Emergency has received a great deal of hype in the last few months. The main reason being that it is the latest enstallment from Rockstar. Rockstar has quickly made a name for itself as the best producer of quality gaming for the PS2. They were responsible for Grand Theft Auto 3, which is arguably the best game ever made and Max Payne, which was thouroughly enjoyable and well worth the price of admission. State of Emergency, however, is not the same class as these other titles. State of Emergency offers 2 different modes of play in four very small levels. There is Revolution mode and Chaos mode. Revolution mode is an attempt at a storyline, where you perform different missions as a member of Freedom, in an attempt to overthrow the evil Corporation that has taken over the city. The majority of the missions are extremely lame, requiring you to rescue and escort a series of wimps as you are ruthlessly attacked by gang members and members of the Corporation. Most of the time you are not even provided with weapons, you have to beat them out of your enemies. These missions can become very difficult and frustrating because the wimps you are susposed to protect are really weak, it doesn't take much to kill them and yet a lot of them pick fights that they can't possibly win. You must intervene and can often easily kill them in the process. They also do not keep up with you when you run, often lagging behind and get slaughtered at the hands of their enemies. To make matters worse you usually have to rescue them from mobs of enemies, where you must defend yourself, defend the wimp and kill all the bad guys. Then you have to get them back to the safe house while being relentlessly pursued at every corner. This is when you are introduced to the mindboggling controls. While you try to protect yourself and others it is often hard to oriente yourself, turn fire, and actually hit your target. It is also nearly impossible to figure where bullets are coming from when they are being fired at you or some wimp you are attempting to defend. There are also many missions where you must protect a building from being entered and as you are shooting 3 enemies another one just strolls right past you and in the door. All of these shortcomings can lead to overwhelming frustration. You need to beat the first 3 levels of Revolution mode to unlock the hidden characters. Chaos mode is more entertaining in that your main objective is to run amok and destroy everything in your path, except for civilians. By obtaining high scores you can unlock hidden levels, like Last Clone Standing, where the object is to senselessly slaughter 200 clones in a short period of time. None of the Chaos modes are too difficult and do not take long to beat. The game does have a lot of gore and destruction. The hidden characters are a hoot and the idea is unique, but all and all a disappointment. On the other hand it is still better than most of the games out there and Rockstar is still king. I would recommend that you rent this title and go out and buy Grand Theft Auto 3 if you don't already own it.
