Good attempt at what will likely be more games in the future

I see this as probably the first in a series of Superman games for PS2. I suspect it's [priced]less than the average PS2 game because they didn't include game features like multiplayer. Perhaps this was done to get it out on the market before the Xbox game.

It has many similar qualities to the original Spiderman for PS1 and so in that regard there isn't any majorly new innovation except perhaps the Cel animation- which isn't really new either since games like Robotech already do this.

Still this limited game is quite enjoyable and the implementation is excellent.

Pros:

- Beautiful cel shading in both the game and in the cut scenes.
- Cartoon series voices are intact.
- Flying thru Metropolis' Art Deco cityscape is really cool.
- Supe flies like Supe. He can do loop-the-loops!
- Supe gets most of the capabilities you'd expect: super breath, heat ray, heat burst, xray vision, super hearing, super top-spin, ground stomp, high speed flight. This provides you with a variety of ways to dispose of the villians.

Cons:
- Can't just pick up arbitrary objects- like cars, except in specific cases.
- Can't crash thru buildings in Metropolis.
- No multiplayer mode- would be awesome if you could recreate the duel between General Zod and Supe in Superman II.
- Would be nice if there is a way to quickly turn around 180.
- Does not use the cartoon series sound track.

I had wanted to play Atari's Superman: Shadow of Apokolips since I learned it would be soon released, and on a whim I purchased it... and I must say that I was highly impressed! It actually feels like I am in an episode of the Superman cartoon. It's quite brilliant! The only draw backs to the whole Superman experience is that some of the villians are some of the more obscure, save Lex Luthor, his bodyguard Mercy Graves and Darkseid, and sometimes there is difficulty using the flying controls. They take quite some time to get used to. But overall, Superman: Shadow of Apokolips is a fantastic adventure well worth the [money] spent to purchase it.

I took part in a market research group for this game and let me say... wow!
Great graphics, great story line...
We were limited on our game play time so i cant speak much on how well it plays over a period of time.. but the hour i had was very good.

FINALLY! A game worthy of the Superman name. I am a true Superman fan, and I got seriously burned when I bought Superman for the N64 a few years ago without playing it. It blew my mind that developers just couldn't seem to make a Superman game worth playing. Well thank the Lord for the good folks at Infogrames. This time they got it right.
This game is basically in interactive cartoon, and it stays entirely true to the spirit of what makes Superman such a great character. The game itself is just so fun to play. You truly do have all of Superman's powers at your disposal. Want to drop out of the sky like a rock and pound some people? Do it. Want to fry that [crook] across the room with your heat vision? He's toast. Or maybe rip a pipe off of a wall and start swingin'. Of course there are also plenty of innocent people that are just begging you to save them. I think that one of my favorite things about this game are the flight controls. It is easy to hover and survey the area, or fly like a speeding bullet.
If you are a Superman fan, or just enjoy a good super-hero game, pick this baby up. You won't be sorry.

I pretty much stayed with the superman history of games, and from the 64 version to this is an impressive leap. I recommend this game to anyone with an imagination, and in the mood for a great adventure.

with the cheats of 'jor el' and 'smallville' for infinite strenght and powers it became more realistic. If you could have 2 player battles, could unlock different superman suits over the years, unlock combos (spiderman movie game), watch superman episodes, have more artwork from over the years, be able to move even faster, like a special move whcih enables 'light speed' flight and movement, be able to run like the 'flash', have more amazing special moves like ultimate twister or somethin..... if you could have all the unlock features .ie. suits, episodes, 2 player, more moves it would be the best game on the plannet...... i really enjoyed completeing it twice and level warping/level attack to fight metallo about 10 times :-)

I got this game today and when I started playing it,it was so much fun I even have unlimited health and unlimited superpower by entering it in the cheats menu and I got all the secret cheat passwords in the game and I ulocked the whole level now I get to go on any level and it is so cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!This game is the second best game I had.

I got this superman game in gamestop in vetura and I still own it since june and I have to admit it is a really good game and the gameplay just amazed me because you get all acess to superman's powers and that was cool too.The only thing I didn't like about this game is mashing the x button because my hands got so tired and it was hard but I beat the game already and it was a great game and an outstanding game and I give it more than 5 stars and I wish amazon let me rate this game 10 stars because this game deserves it and it is my number 1 superman game ever!This game is so good that it is better than the incredibles rise of the underminer game and this game is just too cool and this is my highest recommendation!

Shadow of Apokolpis may have some of the best graphics I've seen in a game. It helps that it's based on the animated series giving the game a cartoonish feel to it almost identical to the series. I also love the fact that the game really makes you feel the true might of Superman. You'll find yourself in many situations in which you get your chance to use all the variety of Superman's famous powers.

The game have some easy stages at the beginning but don't press your luck, it gradually gets extremely hard to play. As is common with Superman, The Man of Steel is set to do nearly impossible tasks. Fustrating as it could've been, the difficulty level also forces you to think like Superman. It's not the kind of game you're willing to set aside just because it's difficult. Instead, it encourages you to challenge the stages. The volcano stage in particular was amazing. It's so grand in an epic scale that you're forced to use all of Superman's might to beat it.

Shadow of Apokolips is way on top among the best games I've ever played.
