PLEASE READ THIS REVIEW BEFORE BUYING THIS GAME!

Please note that I bought this game in used condition on Amazon and there is a snag that you MUST be aware of when purchasing Everquest Gold USED. Unfortunately, although the game arrived in good condition with everything included, I was unable to play it because, during setup of the game, you must create a new account for yourself and, during that process, the game instructs you to type in a keycode that is printed on the game package. After typing in the code and trying to launch the game for the first time, I received an error message saying that that particular account has already been created and that I had to use the username and password that was generated when the account was first created by the previous owner.

Well, guess what? I don't have the slightest idea what username and password the owner of the game used before me. I am not able to change those identifiers; they seem to be embedded in the system. I suppose that since this game is played online, and not as a single player game, the information is locked into the Everquest database and cannot be altered.

Bottom line is that I had to give this game a certain amount of stars so, I compromised and gave it three, but BUYER BEWARE! You will NOT be able to play this game if you purchase it USED unless the seller also includes the 'station name' (what Everquest calls the username) and the password that were used by the previous owner. You should send an email to the seller and ask him/her for this information BEFORE buying this game! If they do not have that info, or will not give it to you, don't buy it from them. Don't throw your money away like I did!

I sincerely hope this helps future gamers! The only saving grace for me is that I only wasted $20 instead of $60.

SOLID TOTALLY SOLID

This game is solid plain and simple. of course there are minor issues that come up now and then but think about it. Thousands upon thousands of people online at any given moment. The graphics, the sounds, the broken quest (that they say are fixed but we all know something else is broke) and maybe the most important part, the social aspect not many talk about. I now have friends and I mean good friends that I trust that live in England, and Germany. The game in all aspect is great. Looking forward to the next expansion.

Reason why some don't like this game

Have no doubt, this is incredibly addicting. If you like computer games, there are 4 reasons why you might not like this game.

First, it takes a lot of time. To get the most out of Everquest, you have to put a lot of time and effort into it. Yes, I said effort. At times, it will feel like work. Some people feel a game just shouldn't take any significant effort. To those people I would say this game is more of a hobby than a game. Any hobby, if it's truly enjoyable, will take effort. In short, like many things in real life, the more you put into it, the more you get out of it.

Second, some people are pretty much ethically opposed to paying a monthly fee for a game. They feel, they paid once when they buy the game, therefore they shouldn't have to keep paying every month. I could mention how games of this type have operational costs (server maintenance, constant development, customer service, etc.) that other types of game just do not have which justify the monthly fee. But instead I'll mention this. The first month after I originally started playing Everquest was the first month I can remember where my credit card statement did not include any entry from CompUSA or Fry's. In other words, went an entire month without buying a new computer game. So, paying $12.95 per month for this game kept me from paying about $50 for an entirely new game. So, this is actually cheaper.

Third, some people are convinced that they, or rather their character, should be the center of the universe in any game they play. Since there are hundreds if not thousands of players in this game, no one single player can be the center of the universe. So, for people in this category, they shun this game because it doesn't make them feel important enough. (I call this the god syndrome)

Fourth, this game will have more lag than other online games such as Counter-Strike, Unreal, etc. But think about it, in that latter category, there will be maybe 1 dozen characters moving around. In EQ and similar games, there will be hundreds of characters moving around... to say nothing of all the NPCs and monsters. So, a dozen moving characters to keep track of versus hundreds to keep track of. How does anybody expect EQ type games to NOT have more lag?? I don't know, but a lot of people feel that way.

So, in summary, I'll say this. Do not come into this game having preconceptions of it being like any other game. It isn't. EQ and similar games are an entirely different breed. If you expect the same type of rewards and enjoyment as other games, you will not like this. But if you can accept that the reward for playing EQ are different and in many ways better than other games, then say good-bye to the rest of your life, and welcome to Everquest Addiction.

As a new EverQuest player, talked into trying the game by friends, this was simply too over-whelming for me to enjoy. Had I had some background of EverQuest, had I actually ever SEEN or played it before, I might have felt differently. As it was, I should have started off with the Basic game, or perhaps the Trilogy set, to see what all the hoopla was about. This has four expansions within it, three of which you will not be able to play about in, until you're of a particular level. That could literally take a year to achieve. I would have saved a lot of money, had I known that, started out slower with the first (and now reasonably priced) expansions and package-bundles, then when I reached a level of accomplishment where I could and wanted to move on and up in the EverQuest world, by then the expansions I would be ready for, would be ready for me -- not to mention, in all liklihood, more affordable.

Alternately, though, if you already know that you love EverQuest, and you will play it to the exclusion of all other hobbies you formeraly enjoyed, then it would be worth the investment.

Okay, let me just say that this game has to be the first game that I have ever bought that I really feel that I wasted my money! I really wanted to like and get into this game, but the server/communication problems are just horrible. First of all, I only connect at 45K (the box recommends 56K) and although that is not too bad, everytime I want to play, the program goes through this autoupdate phase and it could take anywhere from 30min to 2.5hours before I can play the game because it has to download all the updates. Good Grief!!! When I double-click my Icon, I want to play...I don't want to wait 2 hours. Then, after the downloading and update, the game begins. Talk about a delay of game. Just loading the game up (after the downloads) takes about 2 minutes for the game to come up (there is constant Hard Drive churning). I have a Dell 8200 Inspiron laptop with 256MB of RAM and P4 1.6Ghz and a 64MB graphics card. ... Anyway, once the game is up and adam, it is just plain boring. No one wants to talk to you cause you're new. Conversing with the interface is just plain weird. You can't just type away. You have to always press enter first before every line. Just weird. Often I ended up attacking when I was just trying to type a sentence because hitting the 'a' key causes Attack mode to be on. Anyway, after my second session, I actually got the hang of it and it was sort of getting addicting. But then comes the kicker, every time I have played EQ, I have always been disconnected from their servers. Have no idea why! Just these big letters come on the screen that says: YOU HAVE BEEN DISCONNECT. Back to the 2minute wait to load up again. This is not fun! Maybe if I had High Speed it would not be so bad, but has it stands with a 45K connection. FORGET IT!

Constant crashes make the game unplayable

This was, without a doubt, the most disappointing game I have ever purchased. Not because of anything in the game, or the game play itself, as both of those things will forever remain a complete mystery to me. You see, from the moment I attempted to play this game, it began to crash (in some cases Blue-Screening the entire system) literally every minute or two. In some cases, the game wouldn't even start completely. I spent a total of 12 hours, reloading the game, reloading my computer, and talking with Sony's tech support to no avail. The game continued to crash every time I tried to play. I was never even able to exit the building in which you begin the game! Tons of people play this game, but I guess I?m not going to be one of them.
My advice is that unless you're willing to take the time to trouble-shoot random, frequent game crashes and spend 45 minutes at a time on hold for tech support only to get no help, you should take you money elsewhere.

EQ is what you make of it.

Like many gamers, I have played Everquest on and off (mostly off) from the beginning. I enjoy EQ, but invariably Sony or another player does something to drive me away for another 6-12 months. Still, I return, and I enjoy myself each time. EQ offers some very entertaining game play. The mechanics of the game are solid enough to provide a good entertainment return on the time you invest in the game. However, like all MMORPG's, the game relies on its players to provide the overall level of entertainment value. When EQ became overly popular, this meant that it attracted a lot of players that I simply had no interest in sharing my time with. These would be the "I want everything for me and mine right now" crowd. Camping, killstealing, twinking, powerleveling in noob areas were the order of the day. Frankly, arguing with someone that has chosen to spend their lives inside the game for camping turns can be very tiresome (Yes, I realize that you got here first 7 hours ago. But, isn't 7 hours enough?). However, as EQ's popularity has waned and the expansions have opened many more zones, EQ has gained a comfortable feeling of vastness. You can be one of two people in many, many zones. The people you meet are more interested in working with you than working against you. You can make very constructive groups to hunt, or you can run off to more popluated ares for trading. In a way, it saddens me that the best gaming experience I have had in EQ has come after its decline in membership. But, other players are both the meat and the problem in this type of game. And right now, the balance is good.

I like it...

I may have only been playing EverQuest for the past year. I may only play about ten hours a week. My highest level character may only be 20th level. But I have a tremendous amount of fun with this game. True, it's frustrating not being able to find a group. Or having to camp some mobs for days waiting for that certain item to drop. But when you accomplish what you were striving for, the feeling of reward is incredible. I'm not "hardcore" by any means. I play two or three hours every couple of days. But for the price of seeing a couple of bad movies a month, EverQuest is a heck of a lot more enjoyable.
